I finally got around to re-installing Norton Anti-Virus, after over a year without it. Of course, it was too late. I did a scan, and a lot of viruses weren't able to be deleted. Also, I keep getting a virus alert for W32.Desktophijack and Trojan.Desktophijack.B it says Unable to repair this file and Access to the file was denied. So how do I go about getting rid of those? And also, here's a list of the things that failed to delete from the scan:
    -1.exe
    msbb321.dll
    msiaih.dll
    msnimk.gif
    P2P-p2p-10460.exe
    quykw.dat
    redit.cpl
    supdate.dll
    tool4_b2seach.exe

    And just incase...

  2. *New*

    Date: 07/09/05     Keywords: no keywords

    Hey everyone, I'm new here!

My computer is slowly dying, and my family and I will be getting a new one sometime next week. We've had this computer for over several years. All my pictures, documents, and 1000's of songs are on it.

Once the new computer comes, the man setting it up is going to transfer my songs and documents onto the new one. I know people say you should start off with a clean slate, but these are pure memories, everything on here is important to me. My fear is, what if the compueter dies before the new one gets here? Does this mean everything on it is lost forever?

I'm so horrified this could happen. I know to some it may seem stupid, but these are pictures, drawings, and reports that I love to look back on. If I was really that desperate I guess I could print all these things out, but that seems rather silly to me.

So, my question is, if my computer dies, is there absolutely no chance of getting any of my information back :-/

    Thanks in advance!

  3. Attempt #2

    Date: 07/09/05     Keywords: web

Okay, my computer is acting up a little more now.

I posted just a few days ago about my computer acting up. It hits these lapses, where nothing will open but folders. If I try to "trick" the computer by entering a URL in the address bar of a folder window, attempting to open a webpage, the folder stops responding. After a few minutes, everything catches up with itself.

This USUALLY happens once every 1-2 days. But today it's happened at least twice. And, for the first time since I had the computer, it crashed. When it rebooted, it blamed an AOL file (even though AOL wasn't running). The 2nd time tonight it had the lapse issue, twice it told me that " : The system cannot find the specified file." I had to restart to get it out of the lapse.

I'll probably just call Compaq Tech Support tomorrow.

  4. Recovery assistance

    Date: 07/09/05     Keywords: no keywords

My dad formatted our computer, not thinking about the project he spend continuous days and nights to complete - His sister, and my aunt, died suddenly a few weeks ago. He scanned numerous pictures and set up an entire Powerpoint presentation, honoring our family and her life. After he booted the computer up after the final patches were done, he realized what he had done, and is very mad at himself.

Is there anyway to recover these files? Either professionally or manually? Or are they lost forever?

We have a Dell and he used their recovery disks, from what I understand.

He's really upset about this and I'd like to help recover the pictures and presentation if at all possible. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  5. Transfering music from a PC to a Mac?

    Date: 07/07/05     Keywords: no keywords

I just bought a PowerBook today, and I wanted to move all my music files from my PC (Windows XP) to the Mac. I have 10.07 GB of music in my iTunes and when I asked the guy at the Apple Store how to transfer it all, he said something, so I think it's possible, I just have no idea what he said or how to do it. I know it has something to do with burning a data CD, but when I copied the file called "itunes 4 music library" but when I try to open it on the mac, there aren't any files in it, and when I try to copy the folder "itunes music" which I know has all the mp3s in it, it obviously doesn't fit. This is kind of vague, but can anyone help?

  6. problems accessing web pages & such

Date: 07/07/05     Keywords: browser, virus, web

Up until a week and a half ago I wasn't having any problems accessing webpages. Then I fdisked my computer--which I've done in the past with this computer & others (in other words I know what I'm doing ;))--all was fine and dandy until two days later my computer refuses to boot all the way up. It gives me a message that it can't find 'lsass.exe' and restarts...over again. As I've never had a problem with viruses, I never bothered to make a rescue disc for my anti-virus program (AVG) and had to fdisk the computer. That went well. Then I started having problems accessing web pages through any web browser other than AOL. I like to use Firefox, Mozilla, and separate IE windows, and this hasn't caused problems before. Particularly I can't access LJ outside of AOL, there are other sites but that's the one I've noticed the most since I try to get to it so often. ;) I've tried signing on with free Netzero and I can't access *any* web pages then. This is getting really frustrating as the AOL browser setup is limited. Does anyone have any idea as to what's the problem?

  7. Random Reactivation.

    Date: 07/06/05     Keywords: no keywords

This was my original post in May, and the problem just exploded afterwards.

In the last week of May, I was starting a job, and on the first day, I got up early to check my email, and my computer started up with the CMOS message again, but it's done that for a while, my brother said it was that the battery to my motherboard died. But after DOS was done doing its thing, I get the big XP Welcome window, and then a window pops up and asks me to reactivate my copy of XP. I figured that I'd need the disc [but didn't ><] so I haven't gotten around to it until earlier today when my brother came back around to fix it.

Now I'm afraid that if I turn my computer off, I'll have to keep reactivating every time I start up. Will that keep happening? And if so, is there any way I can fix it? My dad was supposed to help me get another computer next week, but he put it off for the next month, so this old piece of crap is all I can work with until then.

  8. ???

    Date: 07/06/05     Keywords: no keywords

Does anyone know of any *FREE* programs that you can donwload that convert songs from CDs into MP3s? I was pretty sure that MusicMatch could do that, but I realized that it can only change WAVs to MP3s, and vice versa.

    Thanks a lot!

  9. FTP Problem in Windows XP

    Date: 07/06/05     Keywords: google

    Hi,

I used to be able to FTP in my laptop. However, my HDD crashed recently and I had it replaced. Since then I am unable to FTP at all. I tried using 3rd party FTP client like CuteFTP and BestFTP, I tried using IE, I tried using cmd but none worked for me. I would be connecting to the remote host and about 20 seconds later, I would receive the message "Remote host had closed the connection" or the FTP client would be trying to re-connect to the remote host again.

I've tried uninstalling SP2 on my Windows XP. I've tried reinstalling SP2 on my Windows XP. I've tried disabling all firewall. I've tried adding port 21 and my FTP clients as the exceptions in the firewall setting. I've used passive mode in the FTP clients. I've googled but none of the solutions helped.

    More information:

Computer: Toshiba Tecra 9100 (I've tried emailing Toshiba for help, and they replied "Toshiba Global Support Centre do not support notebook which are out of warranty." So mean!)

OS: Windows XP with SP2 installed

Thank you for your helps in advance! :) Much appreciated!

  10. Annoying computer problem!

    Date: 07/06/05     Keywords: web

Hi there! I am running a Compaq Presario with an AMD Athlon XP 3200+ processor at 2.20GHz and 448 MB of detected RAM (as stated in System Properties).

I haven't had this system half a year, but it has started with an annoying problem. I installed the computer game Diablo 2 about a month ago. After that, the computer started going through these lapses. In these lapses, no executable program will run. Whatsoever. Internet Explorer, FireFox, AOL...the only thing that will open is folders. I tried to "trick" the computer by typing a URL into the address bar of a folder to open Internet Explorer, but it stops responding a few seconds after opening the webpage. Give it about 3 minutes and everything I TRIED to do during the lapse all happens at once, and then it's fine.

I uninstalled Diablo 2, but the problem has not stopped. It's quite annoying. Any ideas on what I can do?

    Thanks!
    Sean

PS - I tried to post this to another computer help community on LJ, '[info]'computersupport, but they have moderated membership. They say you can post as a non-member, but how exactly do you post to a community without joining?

  11. I'm computer retarded.

    Date: 07/06/05     Keywords: database, virus

    a) What are some good, free virus scanning/get-rid-ofing programs? Something I can use without using IE (since any time I try to open it, it freezes) and not AVG (as a few people have suggested), since it makes Windows fail to open when it makes me restart and I have to uninstall it in safe mode.

    b) Whenever I'm using ACDSee and I go to Database Maintenance, a window pops up that says "Runtime error. C:\PROGRAM FILES\ACD SYSTEMS\ACDSEE\ACDSEE.EXE abnormal program termination" and ACDSee closes. Any clue what could cause that? I haven't changed any settings or (un)installed anything new...

And c) Whenever I try to open Quicktime Player on this computer, it won't open unless I go to "Search for updates" and update the program (every time I restart, I have to update to get it to respond). Then, when I try to open it, I get an error "Quicktimeplayer has caused an error in QUICKTIME.QTS. Quicktimeplayer will now close." I've uninstalled and reinstalled Quicktime about 7,000 times. So... how do I fix this?

Basically, this computer is a mess.

  12. Error 10107

    Date: 07/05/05     Keywords: no keywords

I have a rather old Gateway laptop, with Windows XP. I haven't been able to connect to AOL for a few months, I've tried everything I can think of, and finally went to AOL Tech support. That was an experience in and of itself, but we finally found the problem. I have dial-up, and when I go to the "Remote Access Auto Connection Manager", from the Service in Administrative Tools, the status says "Stopped". Apparently that's why I can't connect. The modem works fine, I just can't talk to their network. When I try to click "Start", it tries for a moment, and then gives me an error message, saying the following:
"Could not start the Remote Access Auto Connection Manager service on Local Computer.

Error 10107: A system call that should never fail has failed."

I have no idea what that means, but it doesn't sound good. Can anyone help me try to fix this?

    Thanks so much!

  13. I'm not sure how to post this: Spy Sheriff Problem

Date: 07/04/05     Keywords: php, browser, html, asp, spyware, microsoft

Hello. I'm not big on computers, only knowing how to do some HTML and how to surf, use some typing programs.

I encountered Spy Sheriff about a day ago and still am having problems.

    Computer: Intell (R) Pentium
    Microsoft Windows 2000
    523,760 KB RAM
    Browser used: Mozilla

On my Admin account, I have this black box with these red letters: SYSTEM STOPPED

White Text: System has been stopped due to a serious malfunction. Spyware activity has been detected.

It is recommeded [sic!] to use spyware removal tool to prevent data loss. Do not use the computer before all spyware removed.

I have on my other account, SM (not real account name), Spybot: S&D. Everytime I try to start up that account, I encounter Symantec Email on the fritz. It shows alot of pop windows open for email.

I have tried to run Spybot: S&D and Regedit to kill all of the Spy Shreiff stuff, but it is like a zombie, it keeps on coming back and won't die!

I only use Hotmail email, so not Microsoft Outlook-esque stuff.

I'll admit that I am not the brightest in the world, and I feel that I would look stupid if the other computer_help community approached my problem. The only reason I sought this community after reading the information page, was that the community mentioned even "someone's monitor being on fire" or "just need help sending email."

My cousin used to pad this computer, it is custom-built with firewalls and such, so much that I felt inhibited, but now I feel like it should be that way, but then again, I am not majoring in computers... =(

{EDIT: On some other LJ community, someone spoke of a porn thing popping up. --I found it...ugg...it installed an icon of some woman, and the text: Free XXX (sighs)

Now I downloaded some Spyware BeGone thing and so far I have 101 infections found.... =(

The symantec thing has stopped something has to be right on the SM account. Still working on solution...

EDIT as of 3:16PM Indiana time: I uninstalled "Spybot: S&D"...but now the SM account won't work...)

    I've been reading stuff:

    http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/index.php?act=ST&f=37&t=37021

I wonder if I can actually get (the porn site popped up again) coolsearch.biz or something) the Hijack This to work, but isn't it obly for Internet Explorer? (sighs, wants to throw computer out window)

  14. IPOD HELP

    Date: 07/02/05     Keywords: software

Does anyone here know a lot about iPods? I am having trouble with mine and I'm getting frustrated. Because of problems I have with my C and D drives, I was hoping to be able to download the software for my new iPod mini on the internet. I went to the Apple site and downloaded the iPod update, which supposedly has the iPod mini software in it. However, the entire thing downloaded and at the end it said "Failed to install." Does anyone know why this is?

If not, where can I download the installer for iPod mini? Is it online anywhere? I downloaded iTunes and nothing happens when my mini is plugged in to my computer. I cannot transfer songs.

Please help me out, I would appreciate it so much! I just spend 200 bucks on this and my piece of crap computer is making it hard for it to work..

Every time something, freezes or i open a floder then close it, my 'Start' button and tool bar freeze, i don't mind it every now and then because of (Alt+Tab) but when i comes to restart (or shutoff) the computer, or when need something in my 'Start' menu i can't get to it because it's frozen.

Someone, please help me. I'm sorry, I'm sure this has been posted, but I can't find anything. Er, and if this isn't the right place, tell me and I'll delete this entry...

I need help with screen-capturing on Winamp/Windows Media Player/Realplayer/What-have-you. It's a .wmv and it won't play in Quicktime, which will allow me to screencap. Augh, it's making me insane, and I wish I knew how.
If any of you know, please tell me. I'm an idiot and can't figure it out.

I am in need of some SERIOUS help. I posted this on the wireless community too, so forgive me if you see this twice.

I have been at this computer for 9 hours tryin to figure this out, and I find it impossible!

This may be a bit confusing becuase so much crap happened, but I'll try not to be.

Ok so my parents have AOL cable. Goes through Brighthouse networks which owns AOL but you have to go through AOL to get online.

Anyway, I have a linksys 802.11b wireless router. My dad has a building outside and would like to get some reception out there (it's probably 150-200 ft from the router, plus it's outside) for the laptop. I looked at access points and ended up finding a rebate deal on a d-link airplus xtreme 2.4 ghz wireless router...DI-624.

I went through the setup and all that, but AOL would not connect. I played with it a bit and got AOL to go to step 2 of signing on, but it would stop after that and say, "unable to connect to the aol service." Then when I would try again, under location it would say, "Connected to AOL," which I was NOT. So I'd have to restart my computer and go through the same crap again. I talked to AOL, who told me to call d-link, who told me to call AOL, who told me to call d-link again, who again told me to call AOL.....every rep told me different crap and had me restart the router and modem 50 times and restart my computer and nothing happened. one aol rep told me i had to set it on pppoe and use a screen name that i will never use again to sign on with. the d-link guy said that was right, yet it still would not work. another aol guy said that was wrong and that the static ip address is correct. lord, i am so lost with this thing.

so i uninstalled and reinstalled aol (by the way the version is AOL 9.0 Optimized SE...don't know if that matters) and nothing happened.

i can get online when the router is taken out of the picture, and i can get online using my old router.

i had given up last night and decided to try again today. i called brighthouse themselves and they directed me to insidecentralflorida.com while not being connected to aol. he told me that this is a website that will work even if i am not connected with aol. sure enough, it did. since that worked, the cable is working and the router is working. i have an ip address, but aol cannot get on.

he told me to call aol again. Aol told me that there is a firewall up and that is blocking aol from signing on. so i called d-link again. the rep said that it is impossible to disable the firewall. since he was a jerk anyway, i called d-link again after i got off the phone with him. the guy told me the same thing. then he had me go through the troubleshooting bs again. now, i can't even go to internet explorer and connect to the router. the lan settings show that there is little or no connection to the internet, and i have restarted the router, modem and computer yet this won't stop. so now I can't even get to step 2 of aol again.

I gave up and plugged in the linksys again. I don't know what to do. One of the d-link guys said I should just return the router. Hello? Why would the company tell me to return their product...?

I have XP, I have the required memory and speed for the router.....can anyone help me?

apologies for my grammar turning to crap throughout the entry...i am tired.
    thanks.

I have two questions. Firstly, I was trying to download this digital right management thing for windows media player so that I can play some things for the WWE Jukebox website(it's basically you use a credit card to get the ability to watch all the matches in there for a month). I did that, and when I tried to play it, it said something like, you need a digital rights management thing for windows media player 9. I tried downloading something like that on a microsoft website. When I opened it up, it started downloading, and it signed me out of msn messenger. I didn't get to finish either, because apparently you're supposed to have windows xp(and I have windows 98).

Now, I can't sign into msn messenger, and I can't go to any websites that are microsoft or msn. So here are my two questions:

Are there any sites where I can download a digital rights management thing for windows media player 9.0 on windows 98?

And, what's wrong with msn, and how can I get back to using the websites and msn?

I'm also using Mozilla Firefox, because my internet explorer is screwed up.

  20. Outlook Express being stupid

    Date: 06/28/05     Keywords: web, microsoft

    Hi everyone...

Recently, the links in my emails have stopped working in Outlook Express. It's fairly inconsistent, but sometimes when I click they're fine, and other times when I click, the IE window won't open, and nothing happens.

I've tried the "hypertext protocol" whatever where you change it to be IE -nohome, and it didn't help. I tried resetting the web settings, and it would help for a few minutes, and then the links didn't work again. It may or may not be connected to the recent Windows Update... the message boards at Microsoft seem to have a lot of complaints associated with the last update. I've tried restoring my computer to an older point and then shutting off automatic updates, and have had some success, but it still acts up when it's feeling froggy.

What is going on with Outlook Express, and how can I fix it? :(
