  2. 'new' OS?

    Date: 06/26/05     Keywords: no keywords

currently i have an illegal version of WinXP on my computer (my mom's boyfriend did it for me, ugh)

i want to put a legit copy of WinXP Media Version (i could be wrong on the name of it, but it's similar to that) but i don't want to lose all my info, and programs and stuff...

is it possible to install the legit version of WinXP, over the not-legit version, without losing everything? or would i HAVE to back everything up? i know it's a good idea to anyway, but i'm trying to figure the SIMPLEST thing.

i'd really rather not need to, and if possible, just installing one over the other would make my life easier.

    :) thanks!

    Date: 06/24/05     Keywords: no keywords

I'm looking for a replacement piece for my HP DeskJet 5550 printer. Namely, a power cord.
The problem is I'm not sure what it's called officially (I've seen a part that looks like it called
an AC Adapter but good ol mom said that wasn't it) and I'm worried I'll find something
online and buy it and it will turn out to be something else.
Can somebody direct me to a power cord for my printer?

I can't just highlight and press delete.
    Any ideas?

I can re-elaborate if I'm not making sense.

  9. dual layer DVD RW

    Date: 06/22/05     Keywords: no keywords

I know this may sound as a stupid question but I am just curious to know.

I recently got a new Dell Inspiron 700m with 8x dvd-rw dual layer burner.

    1. Can I put multiple full sized (700mb) divx movies on one dual layered disc as data files and then be able to view all of them on any dvd player or are you just able to put one movie on it?

    2. Can the burned dual layer discs be viewed on any standard dvd player - as in .. are they capable of supporting playback of the DL discs?

    3. Can the DL discs be played on a sony PS2? or would I be needing a mod chip to play them?

-- Thanks in advance to whoever may respond back.

I go to switch on the switch user option, but it never stays on and won't let my family switch users-we have to log each other off whenever someone wants to get to their account. does anyone know what's going on and/or how to fix this?

  11. Laptop keyboard help?

    Date: 06/22/05     Keywords: no keywords

I'm sure this is an easy fix...please let it be an easy fix...

I have a Dell laptop. It's still under warranty but I'd have to send it back to them for repair and I'm hoping I can do this myself, or that I could have another company (Best Buy/Comp USA/etc) do it for me so I don't have to be without my computer as I use it for work as well as personal use.

The "N" key on my laptop keeps falling off. Is it an easy fix to repair it? And how should I go about doing that?

Thanks for any and all responses.

  12. i hope i'm in the right place...

    Date: 06/21/05     Keywords: web

hi there. i have a quick question about the temporary internet files that are found by first going to i.e. internet options, then selecting 'settings' for temp. internet files (on general tab), and then finally view files. (i'm trying to be as specific as possible so you'll know EXACTLY what i'm asking about.)

anyway, i've noticed that all websites i've visited, even ones i've deleted from i.e.'s history view, are stored in that folder.

my question is: are the only sites stored in there the ones that i've CLICKED ON (accessed knowingly).. or are sites from ads (NOT clicked on / directly accessed) stored as well? for example, if i went to abc.com and an ad for xyz.com was on that site BUT I DIDN'T CLICK ON it, would xyz.com appear in the aforementioned temp int. files folder?

hopefully someone can help. thanks a million in advance.

  13. Slightly off-topic - MP3 Player Suggestions?

    Date: 06/21/05     Keywords: software

Sorry if this is slightly off topic...it's close to a computer question.

I am just wondering if anyone has a suggestion for an mp3 player.

Here are my very picky requirements:

    1. built-in memory of some sort - no hard drive inside (size is the issue)
    2. at least 1 GB storage
    3. accessible like a plain old hard disk when plugged in - no software required
    4. USB 1.1 and 2.0 compliant
    5. small...as small as possible
    6. single battery - probably 1xAAA - and decent battery life
    7. an interface where I can scroll through folders (and see a list on a screen) and scroll through files (and see a list on a screen) - i.e. nothing like the iPod shuffle
    8. Windows XP and 2000 compatibility

    any ideas?

I emptied my recyle bin (winxp) but there still appeared to be something in it (the icon hadn't changed to the empty recycle bin). I right clicked the icon, clicked "empty recycle bin" and a window pops up "Do you want to delete 'WINDOWS'?"

edit: My windows update is permanently stuck at 0%, I run a virus scan every day (AVG) and today it's started picking up attempts from pop3 to connect to an ip and I don't use any pop3 services. Also, I have 2 svchost.exe's running, one as a "local service" at 364 kb and one at "network service" at 1,124. Any suggestions? :\

  16. DVD-R / DVD WRITER HELP NEEDED

Date: 06/18/05     Keywords: software, web, google

my computer has a dvd writer, but i've never used it. i've had the computer for over a year, so i figured it was about time. yesterday, at target, i picked up some cheap "e-gear at target record: dvd-r" discs. i made this fun dvd with some software (arcsoft showbiz2) on my computer. i went to put in the disc, but this is where the problem is/starts.

i put one of this blank dvd-r's in the "hp dvd writer/cd-writer combo". (i've used it as a cd-writer, but never as a dvd writer, like i said before.) this cursor/icon (it's a pointer with a small cd beside it) appears for a moment, but that's all that happens. when i look at the drive under "my computer," it just says "dvd/cd-rw drive." the properties have it named as HP DVD Writer 300n. everything appeared to be working normally under the properties, but nothing is recognizing these discs. so, i (re)installed the drivers. i restarted the computer, and it said "new hardware installed--dvd writer" or whatever. so i'm pretty sure the computer is recognizing the dvd writer. (but i could be wrong, because i've never used it before.) because of this, i'm lead to assume that the media is "bad." i tried multiple discs, but all of them have done the same thing. i googled the discs though, and i found a few websites where people acted like they worked.

what do you all think is wrong? do you have anything else for me to try? (if it's the dvd-r's, do you know if target will take them back? lol) i'm sort of upset, because i was excited about my first dvd (which i had a fun time making, btw).

also....i'm running windows xp, service pack 2. i really appreciate any help you can give me. thanks!

  18. Sound Blaster Audigy Platinum

    Date: 06/16/05     Keywords: no keywords

Hi, I'm running a soundblaster audigy platinum soundcard, with the front drive. I recently just picked up a headset and i'm trying to use the microphone input on the front drive, which is the input2/mic2 input. However whenever i set it to use this one, and then load up an application to use the mic, it defaults back to the mic input in the back of the audio card. which is annoying because when i load up a game to use it then i have to load the game, alt tab out of it and switch back to the game. Anyone know how i can keep the second input as the default. (I'm not looking for answers like, resolder the wires on the card, or just get a switch or extension, it negates the whole purpose of having the front drive.)

  19. password stealing webmail login?

Date: 06/16/05     Keywords: security, web, yahoo, ebay

The bookmark that takes me to my webmail (yahoo) was directing me to www.login.yahoo.com but I had to type my password in every time I opened it (previously I would only have to type it in once every 24 hours). I didn't think much of it, Yahoo's been changing some stuff around so I thought it might just be a temporary change.
Today it kept saying my password/username wasn't correct when I was *sure* I typed it in correctly. It asked me to retype my password as well as my username and put in some scrambled letters and numbers in an image - a security feature. I do it and I'm in my email.

Things are seeming a bit fishy so I checked the url and it was www.login.yahoo.com so I went to www.yahoo.com and clicked the "check mail" link and was directed to www.mail.yahoo.com. So what is www.login.yahoo.com??? I'm thinking my password and username were stolen and perhaps I've got someone going through my email, possibly looking for ebay passwords.

    Thoughts?

    Date: 06/16/05     Keywords: software, web

I have a webcam from my friend, and I'm having trouble getting it to work.

I'm sure I've installed all the software and all, but when I plug it in, my computer doesnt dectect it and declares it an unknown device. I've tried downloading stuff off sites, thinking it would fix the problem, but I'm unsure if what I'm downloading is the right stuff.

    The webcam is a:
    Logitech QuickCam 6.0.1

Any help, direction, or more stuff to download would be appreciated.
    Thank you.
