1. Disable MIDI?

    Date: 11/06/06     Keywords: no keywords

Well.. SOMETHING happened to my computer and for whatever reason the MIDI driver on my comp is screwing up my ability to audio on my computer. Audacity crashes on startup, and n-Track doesn't let me record, and I think it all leads back to a corrupt MIDI driver or hardware. Is there anyway to disable this? Or is there another thign I should do? In the Sounds Preferences on my Machine (FYI, Win XP, AC'97 7.1 nVidia Motherboard SoundBlaster) it does not let me select the Windows Midi driver, or rather, it lets me SELECT it, but then I click Save and then I go back and it isn't saved. Is there anything I can do to remedy this? Anymore info you need I'm more than happy to provide. Thanks.

  4. Need PHP/MySql/Joomla coder

Date: 11/03/06     Keywords: php, mysql, html, sql, web

I'm working on a Joomla web site project that will be getting national attention over the next two years (it is election-related, with a "test run" for the 2007 election, but the real fun will happen in 2008). I need to find a coder who can help create a Joomla component and module. We have designers for the layout, this is just the backend MySql coding and the front-end component/module code as well as HTML form code for interaction.

As such, I need someone who can hit the ground running with MySql, PHP and understands or can quickly come up to speed with the coding model of Joomla.

If this is you and you'd be interested in working on a high-profile project that will get much national attention, a load of traffic, likely become a reasonably well-known meme, and also actually make some small difference in the screwed-up political process we have here in the United States, please let me know.

    Hello fellow computer geeksters,

As a fulltime computer professional, I have various issues and questions that tend to go a bit beyond what we normally find in the current LJ communities. So far I've been able to find an LJ community that is geared towards professionals - so I've created one. (Please tell me if you know of any currently existing). '[info]'computerpros is dedicated strictly to computer professionals, those of us who work in IT for a living. I hope for it to become a place where we can talk shop about servers, protocols, ethics, management... Things beyond "my computer won't turn on" and "Windows sucks, Macs are purdy!".

So if a computer professional describes you, head on over to '[info]'computerpros. Join today, don't delay!

  7. Replacing CPU

    Date: 10/30/06     Keywords: no keywords

I've replaced pretty much everything on a computer before (fan, drives, power supply, cards, the usual stuff) except the CPU. Because I'm n00b as far as ripping out and plucking in a processor, I thought maybe you guys can give me a few tips besides the ones I've seen on the internet.

    Some considerations:

    1. I assume that I can't just pull the processor with my bare hands. At least, I shouldn't. Does that mean I need to buy a "plucker" or something? How to pull without bending any pin.

    2. Separate heatsink from CPU, then take out CPU? (I have this funny mental picture of ripping the heatsink off like the Incredible Hulk) Many guides just assume that I'm installing, and that's it.

    3. I have socket 478 (2nd gen P4). I can't really see the old retention bracket. Does that mean it's not there and I need to buy a new one or what? Maybe I just need to look more carefully...

    4. Cleaning heat spreader before applying paste.

    Thanks.

My computer keeps making this stuttering noise when i start it up or when i play music. I use to think it was because i had too many programs running, but i make it run with the barest minimum of processes and it still continues to stutter. Anybody have any ideas?

  9. Another weird ICQ problem.

    Date: 10/28/06     Keywords: no keywords

    Hi, everyone.
Lately I have trouble sending http links on the ICQ.
For example if I'll send message like "Hey, check out http://www.bloodyhell.hl, it's the best place to order ice cream." recipient wi'll not receive it, but if the link in message will miss the first h (Hey, check out ttp://www.bloodyhell.hl...) it'll be ok.
    What's the trick here?
    Thanks for your time.

Hey, any advice would be great.

I started making a powerpoint presentation for the web, but when I save it, it only saves the first frame and the photo on the first frame. I tried highlighting all the frames before I began saving it as HTML, but it didn't help.

    Any advice?

    Thanks.

  11. Numpad mode

    Date: 10/26/06     Keywords: no keywords

Hi all. I recently started testing Orca on my laptop, running Slackware. Unfortunately, I lack a numpad to use the flat review features, and there is no laptop keymap as of yet for the Orca-specific keystroke combinations. Does anyone know if the Inspiron-600M has a numpad emulation mode of some kind? I haven't found any info as of yet however, perhaps I overlooked something. Thanks!

  12. someone set me up the bomb

    Date: 10/26/06     Keywords: asp, spyware

i'm in the process of removing a trojan that was on my computer and all of my shortcuts have been replaced with 52k clones in a \data\resources\ folder

for example winamp's shortcut instead of going to c:\program files\winamp\winamp.exe goes to c:\program files\winamp\data\resources\winamp.exe

is there an easy way to fix all the shortcuts on my system automatically? rather than having to go through the startmenu/quick launch manually removing the /data/resources/ links?

    thank you

and if you're really hardcore and want to fix me with the spyware, i've posted a combofix and a hijackthis log here:

  14. My Frigid Taskbar

    Date: 10/25/06     Keywords: no keywords

I have a strange problem. When I decided to change the location of my taskbar the other day, little did I know that it would be the last time. For when it left my cursor and fell to the side of my screen, it literally frosted itself there, like moist tongue on dry ice. I clicked and dragged it. Everyday for the past few weeks I have spent a few minutes worrying over my blue taskbar, clicking at it, sometimes gently trying to talk it out of its state, but it just won't listen to pillowtalk. Or reasoning. If I knew it would help, I would burn incense and spin prayer wheels as an offering to computer gods to make my taskbar pay more attention to me. But there is no sign of that they hear my clicks because the cursor doesn't even change into the little rectangle as it used to do before.

    So I'm despondent.

Don't know what to do. Why, taskbar, why?

  16. My Boyfriend is Moron

    Date: 10/23/06     Keywords: virus

Well, I thought he knew better, but I guess not. I go on my boyfriend's computer & all sorts of weird stuff is going on. The homepage in IE won't come up right & I get warnings about things being a virus, & I find a bunch of new unknown programs on the computer... My boyfrined tells me he downloaded them... All I could do was stare at him blankly for about two seconds, before completely ripping into him. I mean he should know better, but I guess not.
So anyway, I want to completely wipe the hardrive & start over. I found his system disks, & I was wondering if there was anything else I should do before I try to do this. Keep in mind the system restore is not going to do anything, because it only goes back so far, & I've been wanting to do this for months now. This is like the tenth time something has happened in the time I've been able to use this computer. So there's damage I can't undo from before.
The computer is a Dell XPS Gen5, running Windows XP (not sure what edition).
    Thanks in advance.

  18. Sound File Lost

    Date: 10/20/06     Keywords: no keywords

I just went to listen to something on my computer and no sound came out of it. I made sure everything was plugged in and it was.. When I unplugged a speaker wire, I head some crackling in my speakers, so I am assuming that the speakers work fine.

Last night, I was going through and deleting files that I THOUGHT were not important. Is there a file that is essential in for playing sounds? Most of the things I deleted were .txt files. I did delete something that said that if I deleted it certain things wouldn't work properly. ANY ADVICE?

  20. printer advice

    Date: 10/18/06     Keywords: no keywords

I'm hoping that you don't mind if I ask a question about printers. My boyfriend and I would like to buy a printer for text documents - so we don't need color. We would like to save on cost and wonder what is the best way of doing this. We are willing to buy used as long as the printer is of good quality.

    Thank you for your help.
