Super stressed on this problem
Date: 10/13/06
Keywords: no keywords
I am building a computer right now with a pentidum d 3.04 ghz processor and 2 gigs of ram. Everything is connected to the computer properly we triple checked the wire diagrams and everything looks good. When plugged in it starts and a boot screen appears then the computer automatically shuts down. Everytime. so we changed the processor to see if that was an issue. well when we did that the computer ran for a while and seemed ok so i figured it was just clock speed even though intel usually has good stuff. however, the computer started loading windows and then shut down again. now its doing the same thing. i am perplexed I have no idea what could be the cause of this issue. is it the motherboard or something else. Any suggestions would be great as i am totally stuck and need to get this computer running asap.
Thanks

.com domains
Date: 10/10/06
Keywords: web
interesting question. heard from a customer today that as of the beginning of october ICANN has now made it that, .com domains need an auth code in order to be transferred, but i can not find any information confirming or denying this notion. was wondering if anyone else has come across this and can provide any links or insights.
i've been searching all the registrars and icanns website, along with many technical news sites, haven't found a damn thing . . . any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

What possible use?
Date: 10/07/06
Keywords: database, linux
Just arrived from an old data center, with a database on them that I safed, backed-up, and then called the job done. Two of the following:
Pentium III 500 MHz processor on a motherboard with AGP (not AGP 2x or 4x, but first-generation AGP)
768 Megabytes of RAM
52X CD ROM
64M Graphics (seriously nothing stellar)
15 GB hard drive
I can't think of much of anything to do with these machines. Sure, I could throw Linux on them, but why? I don't need a UNIX server, I don't need a cheap DNS machine... They'd barely run Windows XP. The memory is PC-133, so no real use for it.
Anything cool I'm overlooking that could be done with these outdated boxen?

Selsyn C78249 needed
Date: 10/06/06
Keywords: ebay
I've been volunteering lately at the Computer History Museum, which, if you are anywhere near Mountain View, CA, you should visit. You can play Spacewar on a completely restored PDP-1. If not, there's great stuff on-line. I recently encountered the NORDSIECK Differential Analyzer (scroll down to find it) while helping move masses of historic machines from one location to another. This draws on Babbage's work and has been restored by Tim, whose amazing Analytical engine and Differential Analyzer made of Meccanos can be seen here. But there's a Selsyn motor, model C78249, with one burned out winding that needs replacement. Because of museum conservation practices, the existing one can't be rewound (don't ask me, I'm just repeating what I'm told). So a replacement needs to be found for it to operate properly.
I wish there were a better picture: it's row upon row of selsyn motors, but the most entertaining part is the bank of lightbulbs hanging down under the top - those are the overload fuses. If there's a power problem, the lightbulbs blow. Ah, engineering!
There are other model selsyns, but there are plenty of those around. Apparently the C78249 is rare or at least hard to find. Searching eBay for about a year has not helped. I gather these motors showed up in WW2 battleships and were popular with CBers who used them for rotating antennas. Help us find a motor! Please check your garage, your neighbor's garage, and the workshop of the weird guy down the street with the aluminum foil hat and see if you can find one. Call ship dismantlers - whatever you can think of. Please email me at mopalia at livejournal dot com if you succeed. And thanks for trying.

Life expectancy of motherboards
Date: 10/04/06
Keywords: no keywords
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PC_motherboard
Motherboard voltage regulation uses electrolytic capacitors. These capacitors exhibit aging effects which depend on the temperature of the parts, since their water based electrolytes slowly evaporate leading to capacity loss and motherboard malfunctions due to voltage instabilities. While most capacitors are rated for 2000 hours at 105 degrees Celsius (life formula [1]), their expected design life roughly doubles for every 10 degrees Celsius below this. At 45 degrees Celsius a lifetime of 15 years can be expected, which appears reasonable for a computer mainboard. In the past, many manufacturers delivered substandard capacitors, which would reduce this life expectancy figure. With inadequate case cooling this can become a serious problem. It is, however, possible to find and replace broken capacitors on PC mainboards. For more information on certain types of premature capacitor failure on PC motherboards, see capacitor plague.
15 years is a lot longer than I expected to hear. Even 10 years is pretty long. My older computer is 5 approaching 6, and I was kind of expecting the limit to be around maybe 8 instead of 10 or 15. Perhaps it's worth it for me to upgrade the CPU after all... No sense in ditching something that's been working flawlessly. Since I don't overclock the main board and never plan to do so in the future, I expect the lifespan to be average (instead of below average, like the previous computer which was constantly overclocked and is pretty much good as dead right now with all the reliability problems).

Locked XP Home Machine
Date: 10/04/06
Keywords: virus, spyware, google
My neighbor's son has apparently locked their family computer.
A dialog box has been brought up indicating that the computer is "locked" and requires a password to continue. However, nothing appears in the box when my neighbor tries to type in the password. Google has brought up multiple ways to lock a workstation down, but none of them seem to present the same behaviors as what's happened to my neighbor. Does anyone have experience with behaviors like this?
As an aside, this might be a virus or spyware, as it seems to exhibit a normal behavior in an abnormal way.

Firefox going off screen when loading

On some pages, when loading, Firefox stretches off my monitor. It's... weird. It comes back once the page is done loading, and it's not really a huge problem, but I figured I'd see if anyone knew what the deal was. Here's sort of what it looks like. The right edge of the picture is the edge of my monitor.

Logitech webcam problem.
Date: 10/03/06
Keywords: html, virus, antivirus, web
My roommate is having a connection problem with her Logitech webcam, and I have no idea how to fix it. She is not running a firewall program, all appropriate ports are open, and her internet is properly configured. She has gotten it to work before, but it has mysteriously lost the ability to connect when she came to the University. Does anyone in this community have any ideas about what might be wrong?
Here she explains the problem in her own words:
I bought a Logitech Quickcam Messenger from Target expecting it to properly work with my mac iBook. I immediately found out the camera wasn't compatible with my laptop. After quite a few hours of research I finally found a way to get it to work. I had to go into my router's html page, into advanced, and into forwarding to change the in and out ports to properly accept the cameras image. I also downloaded a program called Macam, which was recommended to me. Now I'm not sure what necessarily got the camera to work but it was fine all summer. Now I've come to college and have an ethernet connection. Of course I can't change the forwarding settings but I was told from the tech help that all the ports necessary are open, so that's not it. It's really wierd to because I can recieve someone else's video image, and I can see my own with the camer, so it's properly connected, but when I send it to someone else, it says it's waiting to be sent and then it cancels. It simply can't get through. When I got here I also had to download Symantec Antivirus, so I'm thinking that might have something to do with it. But that seems very wierd and unlikely, especially since I can recieve someone else's image. Please help me out if you have any ideas!!

Media disconnected
Date: 10/02/06
Keywords: no keywords
Hello fellow computergeeks!
My computer seems to have a problem! It was working all fine yesterday and the day before, but when I got home today I found that I am not connected to my network. At all. All the other computers in the house are connected to the internet through my router, but for some reason mine is not.
I ran the command prompt and ran the /ipconfig to find the message:
Media State: ............. Disconnected
I tried googling it but I can't really find my answer.
I've checked my cable.
I've system restored my computer.
I reinstalled my network card.
I've tried ipconfig /renew but it doesn't allow me to renew it since I'm 'disconnected'.
I can't access the Linksys router page.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated. :)

Hanging XP

Keywords: no keywords
I just upgraded my friends Windows 2k to XP, and now when I shut the computer down it hangs on the "Windows is shutting down..." screen, but never actually shuts down or says it's safe to shut the computer off. Any thoughts on how to fix this?
The machine is one of those generic HP Vectra office computers that everyone was liquidating two years ago, if that helps.

The "Vista RC1 did this" thread
Date: 09/29/06
Keywords: microsoft
Let's start listing the stuff that Vista RC1 did to you while you're trying to test it.
What did it do to me today:
-In the middle of playing a media file on Media Player Classic, the monitor went on suspend (with the sound still playing of course...) and when I got it out of suspension the OS basically went BUCKING BRONCO on me (that's the best description I could come up with, what with the screen going nuts) until the program went into some kind of zombie state where it was still "playing" the file while I frantically tried to stop the program.
Methinks that it'll be RC5 until Microsoft get this schizoid thing working properly

P4 1.8 vs. P4 3.0
Date: 09/28/06
Keywords: no keywords
After I upgraded my older HP desktop with RAM/power supply/graphics card, I ran it against my less old Dell notebook.
HP Vectra VL420 MT
P4 1.8GHz Willamette
1GB PC133 DRAM
AGP 4x, 4x100MHz FSB
Geforce 6800 128, pipes+vertex shaders unlocked
Dell Inspiron 9100
p4 3.0GHz Prescott
512MB PC3200 DDR DRAM
AGP 8x, 4x200MHz FSB
ATI Mobility Radeon 9700 128, overclocked core, overclocked memory
(Core clock of Geforce card not accurate- it's not 10MHz, trust me)
3DMark03
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?2k3=4519200
3DMark05
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm05=1733530
3DMark06, for laughs (I didn't bother OCing the Dell's gfx card on this one, and the driver is different. The other scores I used were actually from the time when I used hacked/enhanced Omega drivers for the notebook- otherwise the scores would be even further apart. I don't use it now because it hangs my gfx card on a game demo)
http://service.futuremark.com/compare?3dm06=519630
Summary:
Old HP whooped newer Dell's ass. It wasn't even close for the most part. The butt cpu is now bottlenecking the older computer, and the butt graphics card is still bottlenecking the newer one. They both suck, it's just that the older computer happens to be sucking a lot less.
...and Vista runs better on the older machine

Avid on Intel Mac
Date: 09/27/06
Keywords: asp
I just bought a new 24 inch iMac. I bought it for the purposes of being able to edit on it. I even upgraded everything to what I could: 2.33ghz processor, 2gb mem, the better video card, etc.
I'm a film student and my school wants us to edit on Avid but Avid currently does not work on intel Macs. So I got thinking and would Avid work on my mac if I used boot camp to run WindowsXP on it? Would you even recommend trying that?
Here are the specs for avid: http://www.avid.com/products/xpresspro/specs.asp

Router Problem
Date: 09/20/06
Keywords: no keywords
Hello fellow computergeeks. :) I have a problem that has been happening for the past I want to say week or so, and I need your help!
I don't know how to decribe it for you to fully understand, but my router is messed up. I have taken pictures for you to see
This is what I basically wake up to every morning. Every morning I have to reconfigure my router so the computers are able to access the internet. I have no idea why this is happening at all. I've even tried resetting the router but after I am done filling in the information on it, it ends up like this the next day.
Once I reconfigure my router I have no problems during the rest of the day, until I try to get back online the next morning [I check my messages before school], in which I have to redo my whole router again.
Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!
I'm running Verizon DSL on a Linksys BESFR41V2 router and switch. 5 computers.
-------------------------
And I also want to add this, because I am not sure why it does this exactly. But whenever I would change a preference on my router, and this has been since we got it about two months ago, I would get the "a network cable has been unplugged". I would have to disconnect from Trillian and reconnect again to be able to get messages. Does anyone know why it does this? Thanks again!
