PC Software for Personal Business
Date: 01/15/08
Keywords: templates, software, web
I'm thinking WAY ahead here, but I'm about to start graduate school and I will eventually run a private health practice. Thus far, I only have experience with the student edition of MS Office. I'd like to familiarize myself with all the programs I need to run my own small business. I'll need to manage at least the following:
*Contacts
*Data/records
*Personal finance/book keeping
*Promotional material creation
*Presentations
*Professional document templates
*Website creation/management
Would you recommend a more advanced edition of MS Office, a different series of PC programs altogether, or a combination? I'd like to keep things as streamlined and simple as possible, but be sure I also have the skills to work with common PC software if I end up in a group practice.
Suggestions? Thanks!

Don't Laugh at Me

I'm smart, but sometimes I'm just dumb/ditsy.
I'm doing a build (using this mobo + processor if you're curious) based on 64bit gear.
I have Adobe CS progs which currently run on Vista 32 bit. I REALLY want the Vista 64 bit now to save on upgrading later.
Does Vista [64] have backwards compatibility to run as Vista 32 or just to run as Win XP?
Hopefully that makes sense to people other than me. Common sense is telling me , "No, dumb arse." Hopefully it does. I like loopholes.
[EDIT] Okay, if I buy Vista Ultimate DVD, I could (in theory) just install both 64 and 32 and swap between OSes if I need to go from hardcore to averagecore... right?

Palm .pdb conversion
Date: 01/14/08
Keywords: html, linux
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone who has a windows machine (I'm all linux and mac) would possibly have a program or would be willing to download a program (I've found a few) that you can use on a trial basis for me.
I have purchased an Ebook for the first time figuring it would be in pdf format, well it's in pdb format. Now I can open it on my Mac computer but the problem is, I can't use voice reading on it (it needs to be either, pdf, html, or txt for that).
Would anyone be willing to help a girl out converting this file?
I'd really be grateful, I hate to waste the money and I love to listen to things instead of always having to read everything.
Thanks

2008 Fellow Award Nominations
Date: 01/11/08
Keywords: html, technology
"The annual Computer History Museum Fellow Awards program publicly recognizes individuals of outstanding merit who have significantly contributed to advances in computing technology or applications, and to the evolution of the information age."
It's time for nominations again, and the museum has opened the process to the public. This year they've opened the nomination process to the public.
http://www.computerhistory.org/fellowawards/nominations for how to nominate.
http://www.computerhistory.org/fellowawards/hall_of_fellows.html for a list of who's already in.
This is a nice honor, and I hope some of you will think of people to nominate. In response to the white maleness of it all, I'm nominating Cynthia Harvey, Morgan State University/NASA, and Thelma Estrin. You can, too. Not that I"m against white males: I'm also hoping to get nominations for Will Wright and Sid Meier. That's an uphill battle, though, because the museum isn't very supportive of the games community. Still, if we start now, maybe we can gain some traction.
Or maybe you know someone else who deserves recognition. This is the closest we have to Oscars for Geeks, so let's use it! Spread the word.

Recommendations please
Date: 01/04/08
Keywords: browser
Hey, I am looking for recommendations for online games. Something free. Something similar to a game I used to play called Ragnarok Online. Is it still around and free?. I liked that it was rather light on bandwidth and graphics. It had cute 2D graphics I also used to play Kings of Chaos and Kingdom of Loathing but those became difficult if I didn't log in at least once a day. As it is, I can do the online game thing maybe 2-3 times a week, sometimes as little as once a week for a few hours at a time. So a game where I can succeed on my own for the most part would be good. Also, something where I can develop skills in game and use those skills to make money AKA tailoring or Archery or such like in EQ. I prefer immersible environments like Ragnarok over browser based game like Kings of Chaos. Any recommendations please?

strange reverse DNS problem
Date: 01/04/08
Keywords: web
Hi all. I'm having a rather strange reverse DNS problem, which I haven't been
able to narrow down as of yet. Basically, no servers i.e., IRC/FTP/web/SSH/etc
are able to obtain my PTR record when they require it. However, if I'm SSH'ed
into a remote machine on a different ISP and I do a host/dig on my IP, I get the
PTR record with no problems, and seemingly in the expected amount of time it
takes to complete the query. Where this problem becomes apparent is for example,
when who shows my IP address next to my username instead of the hostname that
ought to be there. I would like to be able to report this to comcast; however,
I'd also like to figure out what's causing it so that I give them something to
work with. Has anyone here on Comcast Business service experienced this problem;
if so, do you know how they fixed it? Thanks.

Online Quizzes
Date: 12/31/07
Keywords: no keywords
Tapping the geek minds.
I'm finishing-up an online quiz module for Joomla. You know, those silly things where you get asked a bunch of questions and then are presented with your answer, typically a graphical badge suitable for posting in your blog, that says something like, "You are... a member of this subculture!" or "You are 85% geek" and the like.
I've got the basic quiz types done:
1. Multiple choice where you're told if you got the right answer or not
2. Multiple choice where your answers determine which badge you're shown ("You're mostly goth!" or "You're mostly preppy!"
3. Percentage quiz, where you're asked lots of questions and told what percentage you got right.
... so what am I missing? What features in an online quiz would be cool that I'm not thinking of?
Yes, it's a terribly mundane waste of time kind of online feature, but then so is LiveJournal sometimes :-)

How would you go about this?

Hey!
I have 2 directories with music files in them. One is iTunes organized, thus looks like Music/[Artist]/[Album]/[Song].mp3 and the other is on a network share and is organized as such: Music/A-G/[Song].mp3. Is there a recommended program I can use to compare the two directories and tell which songs are in both directories?

laptop newbie

I need to buy a laptop for college in case for some reason my computer internet was to go out, or I go on vacation. I do online school, so I need to be able to post my homework at all times.
Have any of you ever bought a recertified computer? I don't need something high tech and expensive. I found one on newegg that's a Recertified: Gateway ML6230 NoteBook Intel Celeron M 520(1.60GHz) 15.4" Wide for only $399. There's also a HP 530 (GU330AT#ABA) NoteBook Intel Celeron M 420(1.60GHz) 15.4" Wide for $499, which is new. i'm leaning towards the cheaper one, duh, haha but I just wanted to see if anyone has bought a recertified laptop before and had luck with it.
also my father said something about gateway going bankrupt? is that true?
thank you!

The budget overclock legend reborn: Celeron E1600
Date: 12/26/07
Keywords: asp
Intel Celeron E1600 OC'ed to 3.6GHz
http://en.hardspell.com/doc/showcont.asp?news_id=2144
Remember the Celeron 300A, the most bang-for-buck processor ever made? I had one of those. I ordered one that came in a motherboard/CPU bundle. It was overclocked and tested by the dealer to 450MHz, a 50% overclock. I used the thing for 7 years before it finally croaked (and I think it was the motherboard that died from aging caps, not the processor).
Intel is coming back with Celeron E1600, and it appears that the same ridiculous 50% overclocking is achievable at least on engineering samples. If the same results are met on production (Core architecture chips have a fairly good track record as far as the performance of ES vs. production units are concerned) then I'd expect a stampede of buyers once again scooping up these little buggers once they hit the shops...
Feels like 1999 all over again.

Vision of the future from 33 years ago
Date: 12/26/07
Keywords: no keywords
Below the cut is a rather large photo (640 x 480 - 45k) of a RAND Corporation conceptual model of a 'home computer' of the future as they conceived it could look in 2004. This was in 1974.
As near as I can tell, this is totally serious. And the thing about that is, the fact that I'd even suspect it might not be says a great deal about how far off they were 33 years ago. This thing looks like the pilothouse of the Nautilus from some second-rate Captain Nemo movie of the '60s. I say that because even given what I already know about computers of the last half century -- quite a few of which I've gotten to inspect up close -- I can't for the life of me figure out what at least half of the crap in the picture is supposed to be for. The monitor panel looks like the avionics from several '70s airliners, and the controls look like they're from a Korean War-era submarine. One easily suspects that the entire contraption runs on steam.
And what in the name of Charles Babbage is that flipping wheel supposed to be for? At first glance, I wondered if there might be some poor soul trying to get home with just one half of a wheelchair. But on closer inspection, I recognise it, from my tours of some older banks, as well as my memory of banks of the early '70s, as the sort of wheel once used to secure vaults. Okay, fine -- but what's it doing here? I've tried to imagine what possible use it could serve for a computer, and all I can come up with is a primitive scrollwheel -- unfortunately, in this case, a full decade before the first commercial GUI. Maybe it's the main On/Off switch, controlling the primary steam inline. Or maybe RAND just made the whole thing up, as a prank.
EDIT: Well, that was sure fast, folks! Thanks, krayt, for the link firmly debunking this hilarious prank, originally from a Fark Photoshop contest. I love Snopes. And Fark.

Avast v. AVG
Date: 12/18/07
Keywords: software, virus
So, I've been perfectly happy with AVG...until recently. There have been many times where it's required me to restart my computer, which is a bit annoying, since when I get on, it's because I need it and my computer takes approximately the length of a shower to boot up (a separate problem in itself...).
My question is...does Avast do this? Or is it a new thing with anti-virus software to need updates?
Thanks!

When all else fails...

I did a stupid thing a few months ago. I installed windows Xp pro to a new hard drive (d:) instead of replacing the old version on the old hard drive (c:) and cloning it to the new hard drive. Is there any way I can turn my d: drive into the c: drive?
Notes:
1: I can't boot up without the current c: drive. If the current c: drive is not physically connected to the motherboard it will not boot past the BIOS screen.
2: The advanced tools for windows management won't let me change the c: drive into the d: drive. It won't allow me to change the settings for my system volume (c:) or my boot volume (d:).
If I can't do that, is there any way to clone the c: drive and the d: drive together onto another hard drive? e.g. 50 gigs for the c: drive, 250 gigs for the d: drive?
