1. Brute Force SSH Hacking Attempt on My Server; Guess Who Was Responsible?

Date: 08/28/06 (Java Web)    Keywords: web, hosting

I faced serious hacking attempts from a server owned by my dedicated web hosting provider, LayeredTech. More than 23, 000 brute force attempts were made on ssh server alone. And over 13000 attempts recorded in messages log files. What surprised me most was the machine from which the attack originated. You cannot even begin to [...]

Date: 08/29/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, software, database, sql, hosting

With their refusal to upgrade to php5 and let you install any kind of third party software they have effectively rendered themselves useless to me. With that said, does anyone know of any good hosting providers with ssh access? I'm wanting to use smarty, and play around with the Zend framework so I need php5. Also need some databases, I don't know if the free sql databases were just a godaddy thing or not, I hope not. thanks.

  5. Web host searching

Date: 08/29/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, mysql, software, database, sql, linux, hosting

I see that this forum recommends Dreamhost. How long have you been using it? Are they located in the U.S.? I don't know if the latter is necessary, but I guess if a host goes down and loses everyone's files, there could be a group law suit with some recovery. I don't know what to worry about the most, but I did go with a service once that suddenly disappeared. Luckily I had a techie who found the files still available somewhere and transferred them to another server for me.

I'm not a "techie". I'm also not a "designer" so if you check out my sites, please be kind on the critique of their appearance (search engine optimization and user-friendly access is my biggest concern).

I'm presently using a really cheap hosting service for one of my sites, 3ix. My son has used it for 2 yrs. with no problem. Has anyone here used them?

I have a site I need to move over to a server with Linux, MySQL, lots of database space available, lots of free software available, including PHP. 3ix offers a lot of software. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

  6. Freeware search

Date: 09/02/06 (MySQL Communtiy)    Keywords: mysql, database, sql, hosting

Anyone know of a freeware tool to Synchronize a MySQL testing server on my machine, a MySQL remote server on my firm's server, and a MySQL client's server. Trick is that the database name's for each server is different according to each server's hosting scheme. Local has no prefix but the firm and client server's have prefix's. I have to do it in stages test->firm, test->client... that's fine because its better then nothing.

otherwise I am just going to write a script to try and transfer data between the servers with the testing server being the master of the others.

  7. web hosts that suck

Date: 09/08/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web, hosting

hello again, and onto the next topic:

i have a client who just got totally dicked over by his webhost, new global net (newglobalnet.com - not that it exists anymore). they completely disappeared from the city, and my client's site went down when they did.

so now apparently he can't transfer his domain to a new host until it expires next march. his domain registration was done through tucows, who sell wholesale webhosting/domain registration to the middlemen hosts. the contact info for the domain is an email address that no longer exists, so no one can approve the domain transfer.

so i'm pretty sure he can edit his domain contact info through tucows here: https://manage.opensrs.net/, but not without the domain username and password. which he does not have.

tucows has been zero help, and the new host can't do anything about it either.

can you think of anything else we could try to get this domain transferred? my client even went to new global net's supposed "office" which turned out to just be a mailbox. no one has the username and password anymore to edit the domain contact info, aside from the now nonexistant new global net.

we're using 1and1.com for the new host (which i'm really liking, btw) if that changes anything.

man if i could figure this out for him i would be an INTERNET GODDESS and maybe get a little more cash out of the project. any ideas?

  8. School file / print / management server ideas

Date: 09/16/06 (IT Professionals)    Keywords: software, html, security, virus, antivirus, linux, hosting

So... I am trying to help a (very) small school actually get some IT going.  Could I get some opinions on how to build a low-cost file and print server for a place with about 50 computers?

Right now, they're running a mix of MacOS X and Windows XP Home / Win98.  They have NO server to speak of (not even an IT guy), and teachers print by connecting to some other workstation's shared printer or they figure it out on their own.  They have no backups whatsoever, and many computers don't print because they don't have the right drivers installed, etc.  I think they should have some solution that costs very little in recurring maintenance, and I'm torn between the options at this point.

I was thinking of 3 ways to go about this, but I'd love to see what others may recommend...

    1) Buy Windows 2000 Server (because it's cheaper) and get 50 CALs.
    Perceived pros:
    - Any IT guy should know how to help them administer a windows server.
    - File sharing and print services are built into the OS, no additional tweaking required.
    - Domain controller could help them manage group policy, push software updates out, etc.
    - Other software (antivirus management, etc.) can run straight on the DC.

    Perceived cons:
    - I still think that'll run over $500 for the software licenses, right?  Then upgrades, of course.
    - System maintenance will be essential if the server's to be kept virus-free.  Will maintenance cost more?

    2) Build a Linux server that has Samba / CUPS services
    Perceived pros:
    - Very cheap (free) to set up
    - Many features can be added to the server
    - Not very susceptible to viruses or other security holes (provided auto updates are in place)

    Perceived cons:
    - Unfamiliar interface for the non-technical administrator
    - Services will have to be set up manually, perhaps tweaks will have to be made to be compatible with newer OSes.
    - Can 3rd party software run on this? (i.e. antivirus managment)
    - Not any IT guy will know how to fix the server?

    3) Buy an appliance built for the job, like the PowerElf II (http://greencomputer.com/solutions/school.shtml)
    Perceived pros:
    - Quickest setup (possibly)
    - Many services provided out of the box (including ones they probably will never need, like email hosting)
    - Automated maintenance and backup is part of the system.

    Perceived cons:
    - Initial cost is $2000 at least, possibly more for hardware maintenance
    - Vendor lock-in is possible
    - Incompatibilities with 3rd party software??

Anyway, I wondered what you all thought.

  9. Form Help

Date: 09/26/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: css, html, java, web, hosting, apache

Hi... i'm trying to figure out how to make a simple server side web application. I was wondering if someone know a good site that can help me figure out what i need to do or learn to do.

Basically i thought of something clever i wanted to incorporate into a myspace friends/add function. Basically redirect them to another page instead of the norm "click to add" function. Then make them check off a couple items, then IF all the check boxes were "true" then after hitting submit, it performed the normal add function.

If you're going to say some troll statement about how you don't like myspace... please don't bother. I'm not asking for critique on what i'm doing, i just want to learn how to something.

I've read the oriely HTML/CSS book, have a good understanding of webhosting and some apache but i've never done any web programs/applications.

If there is a good book out there that can help with these on a begineer level let me know, i really haven't found anything. The Java books are a little well... dry to read without actucally being around ac omputer to do the examples.

Something like this: (adding a text field -> output to a text file (csv) would be cool.) Sites with free basic customizable code would be good too. I saw the links in the user info on the community but got a little overwhemled on what i needed.

    input 1(check box)
    input 2(check box)
    input 3(check box)

    Submit

app decides whether all are true (and's all inputs).

If false gives some error page
if true, links just the add link for my page (just redirects to some page is easy enough)

My current contractor has a number of websites that were developed by a whole lot of different people. Because of the NDA, I can't cut & paste the code involved, but has anyone heard of a Error # 30 when using MyIsam tables on a 4.1.x MySql server? I've ransacked the documentation trying to figure out what caused this because the current solution offered by the hosting company is unacceptable.

Some more specifics... the error was with a UPDATE that took a field value and set it to myField = myField + 1; It's been bothering me because I have the mysql source code and I've tried walking through the code to figure out where this phantom error code came from.

  12. Site monitoring tools

Date: 10/15/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: web, hosting

Started writing a rather simple cronScript on the company dev. server that pings and fetches the index page of the companies websites.  The purpose is to track it's status (200 or 403), latency from the perspective of the dev server, and then if the server is down for twice or more in a hour, to page me.  Before I really put more energy into it, does anyone know of a free ware system (not service) that does the same thing?

    Note:
Scripts can not be run on the production/live servers.  I have root via SSH, but I really don't want to login to them and modify the environment in anyway unless it's to fix something.

    Why:
Previous developer randomly picked the current hosting service and they've become unreliable (network outages w/vague explanations as to why but its not our servers)

It seems forms do not like me.

Okay, so I'm trying to get FormMail.cgi to work on http://asklimbit.ledgers.com/form_test.html
Everything shows that the script itself is fine.
But, when I go to send the form, this happens:
close sendmail pipe failed, mailprog=[/usr/sbin/sendmail] at (eval 8) line 108.

I did check what sendmail was on my server. What you see in the form is what it is.
I checked with my host (myhosting.com) and it turns out that they don't completely host sendmail right now and recommend SMTP Auth.

I used the FormMail code from http://nms-cgi.sourceforge.net/
Does anyone have experience with this script? If so, can you tell me if there's a way to impliment SMTP Auth?
If not, then does anyone know of a mail script available that takes advantage of SMTP Auth?

    Thank you very much.

  16. One-Way Links?

Date: 11/11/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: web, hosting, yahoo, google

Thanks to everyone who responded to my previous post...you guys are definately a great source of information!

I'm wondering what everyone thinks about the power of one-way links to your webpage. For example, getting links into smaller engines and directories like DMOZ, JoeAnt, Scrub the Web etc. I know a lot of people don't necessarily use them to search anymore but I have heard that having a lot of those sites linking to your site can help improve your rankings in the organic portion of Google and Yahoo! Can anyone let me know how accurate this is?

Also, this is slightly off-topic, but I'm looking for suggestions for FREE photo hosting sites. I use Photobucket but I need to compile a list of user-friendly ones to give to people who are using this website and want to host photos for things like the message board. Can anyone give me some suggestions?

    Thanks!

  17. Web Project

Hello, everyone. I recently acquired a web project that I am, unfortunately, unable to do. It requires some PHP/MySQL and Javascript knowledge that is a little over my head. I was wondering if anyone here would like to either help me with this project, or take it on completely. The company is based in Dallas.

My website is www.thecablepro.com and we recently had a PHP upgrade by
our hosting company. Unfortunately some of the calculations for pricing
were upset by this and are not functional. There is also a number
showing up on some of the pages directly above the left upper corner of
the "cost per additional foot" box on the cables themselves. It seems
the way money amounts are displayed in the sale section is not correct
either. The amounts are showing up with only one numeral after the
    decimal point.

If anyone is interested, please let me know by commenting. Thank you.

Note: I apologize in advance if this is not allowed.
