1. HTML-only refreshing

    Date: 12/03/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: browser, html, hosting

    OK, this has been doing my head in and despite trawling the code for some sites that do it (eg. RackSpace) I cannot figure out how to get a page to refresh/reload without having the browser reload all the images too.

    In other words, how do I reload a page and force the browser to use the images in its cache?

    The reason I want to do it is so that I can gently rotate the front images on my own site (Memset dedicated hosting as they do already if you refresh the page but without all the other images reloading and making it look untidy to the user. (yes I could do it with DHTML but that's a mild PITA).

    Any tips appreciated - this surely should be simple!

    Kate.

  2. Shopping Cart Hell

    Date: 12/05/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: html, java, web, hosting, shopping

    I'm designing a website for a friend. I have a pretty basic knowledge of html but that's about it. I'm good at simple sites. My friend wants a shopping cart, and would prefer not paypal since it can't calculate shipping. Her hosting plan comes with AgoraCart but I can't figure out how in the heck to integrate it seemlessly into my web design. From what I see it only lets you put in a header and/or footer and you can make no changes to the body. This site isn't just pictures and buy now so that's a problem.

    So the impossible dream questions. Does anyone know of a shopping cart that is: Free, can be integrated into the body and let you add things around it, doesn't require extensive knowledge of perl, java, etc, and works with Dreamweaver would be nice but not required (i can use other html editors).

    Thanks.

    DreamHost seem to get recommended every time anyone asks for a good host, but, has anyone had any problems?

    My current host (square1hosting.com) are sucking harder than something that sucks very hard, and have been for some time.

    I need a PHP5 host with MySQL and email for multiple domains at a reasonable price, dreamhost seems to be unbelievably good, which suggests to me they may be overloaded and therefore performance/availability might be dire.

    I have just changed hosting providers and am having a minor problem with files matching before my mod_rewrite rules get to rewrite.

    www.mydomain.com/foobar/stuff

    is matching and executing foobar.php and I don't want it to.

    I've tried changing DefaultType to text/plain so it wouldn't execute as php.
    I've tried turning off ModSpeling in case that had an effect.

    Other info: I'm using apache 2.x and php 5.2 as a fast cgi

    Another question I have is what type of encoding do I need to set to get degree (°) symbols and copyright (©) to display properly. At this new host they display as '?'.

  7. Cheap but lovable webhosts

    Date: 01/04/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: templates, web, hosting

    Hi guys,

    I've had my friend's website (the Book Brothel - a book reviews site, very cool) hosted on Netrillium for the past three years.

    Last year, Movable Type exploded. I don't have internet at home and couldn't really do anything in the way of fixing it. I asked for help from Netrillium, because googling the problem led me to believe it was the result of a change on their end which messed up my install. They tried a little, said it was fixed, I said it wasn't, they ignored me for a year (not that I was e-mailing daily.. but still.) My long-suffering friend trudged bravely on with her half-working install.

    The last straw has come, though: as she approached her space limit, the MT install was garbled again. We asked for a backup. We asked to be moved to a higher plan. They said 'we'll look for a backup and let you know' over a week ago. Since then, the domain renewal came up, I missed it due to work holidays, and they never sent me any sort of notice. The domain (bookbrothel.com) is not currently ours.

    I am, understandably I hope, fed up with Netrillium. I think that the owner, Ermina, is a saint, but she hires idiots. My long-winded question is this: where do I go?

    I am getting the internet at home within a week, so I will be able to keep my own eye on my next Movable Type (or possibly Textpattern) installation, so support needs to be polite and quick, but they don't have to hold my hand. All I want is responses to my queries!

    I want a place which will register a domain for roughly $10US or under, and give me ~200MB of disk space, 300 would be better. I've just been away from the design world for so long I have lost touch with hosting companies, registrars and all its related ilk.

    I'm pretty sad about my Netrillium breakup. I used to have a reseller account, hosted all sorts of freebie templates, design collectives... *sigh*

    1) Can anyone recommend any reliable and not too expensive UK based webhosting companies?
    (only hosting, no domain name registration needed)

    Necessary features:
    - Linux/Apache server
    - at least 150MB webspace
    - bandwith/traffic on a normal scale, the more the better *g*
    - PHP (version 4 okay, 5 better)
    - at least one MySQL database
    - FTP access and several email accounts should be a given

    A plus, but not really neccessary:
    - .htaccess
    - cgi/perl
    - shell access

    2) DreamHost as a webhost for a small business website?
    I do have a DreamHost account, mostly for dabbling around and trying out stuff, and love all their features (and low prices). But although I've never had any problems so far, hearing every now and then about down times or bad customer service makes me a bit reluctant to recommend them to a client for hosting their small business website. Opinions, anyone?

    Thanks! :-)

  12. let me flee from Y!SB

    Date: 01/18/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, web, hosting

    Yeah, Y!SB is getting on my last nerve.

    Along with spiking from an average of 4,000 403 errors to 100,000+ 403 errors last month (and I have no idea what caused this), the site I run is getting constant 500 errors now anytime someone tries to post a news article via Movable Type

    Does anyone know of a good business-oriented web hosting service that can easily support a site that generally has 150k pageviews/10-15GB of traffic (and this will most likely be increasing).

    The things I'm running that I would like to continue using are:
    Movable Type
    awstats
    phpAdsNew

    As far as I'm aware, any hosting company should be able to let those work without a hitch, yet Y!SB is giving me a lot of shit the last two months and I'm getting pretty sick of them.

    A good number of POP-capable email addresses would be nice, too, since if we leave Y!SB for web hosting we may want new email hosting as well.

  13. Textpattern Websites

    Date: 01/19/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web, hosting

    Hi guys,

    I design and manage a site for my best friend, the Book Brothel*, which had been running for the last two years on Movable Type. Our installation messed up, we couldn't fix it, and our webhosting company was pretty much useless and we've now signed up with another host and have our eye on recreating the site in Textpattern.

    I've played around with Textpattern some, and can be pretty creative with content management systems, but I was wondering if anyone out there has examples they can link me to of brilliant implementation of TxP sites?

    The only site I know of offhand which is run on Textpattern is the website of a long lost friend, at Erisfree.com, and it's pretty wicked - but I thought asking around here may yield some suprises!

    Thanks in advance! I'll be sure to come back here for suggestions when I get something up and running. :)

    *The site itself is blank right now, but Archive.org can give you a pretty good idea of what the site used to look like, if you're curious!

  14. Roundcubemail email package

    Date: 01/30/07 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, programming, web, hosting

    Hello everybody,

    I am still new at PHP programming and have already picked up some tips by watching this community. This is my first time posting and I hope to solve my problem this way. Thanks in advance!

    Ok, here is what I'm trying to do. I have installed the email package 'Roundcubemail' on the hosting server and website and am trying to modify the code so that I can add a fixed message to each email that will be sent out. Something like a disclaimer at the bottom of business emails.

    File 1 -------->
    In the following directory, I found this file...

    /mysite/roundcubemail/config/main.inc.php

    and this code....
    171> // path to a text file which will be added to each sent message
    172> // paths are relative to the RoundCube root folder
    173> $rcmail_config['generic_message_footer'] = '';

    File 2 ------->
    Then, I found this file in directory...
    /mysite/roundcubemail/program/steps/mail/sendmail.inc

    and this code...
    163> // append generic footer to all messages
    164> if (!empty($CONFIG['generic_message_footer']))
    165>   {
    166>   $file = realpath($CONFIG['generic_message_footer']);
    167>   if($fp = fopen($file, 'r'))
    168>     {
    169>     $content = fread($fp, filesize($file));
    170>     fclose($fp);
    171>     $message_body .= "\r\n" . rcube_charset_convert($content, 'UTF-8', $message_charset);
    172>     }
    173>   }

    File 3 ------->
    Ok, I have created a text file 'footer.txt' and added a new directory '/mysite/roundcubemail/footer/' that now contains my footer-file.

    The contents of this file is for now...
    _____________________________________
    email footer
    _____________________________________

    I have changed line 173 in file main.inc.php to this ...
    173> $rcmail_config['generic_message_footer'] = '../footer/footer.txt';

    But alas, the message in the text-file is not added to the email sent. Any advice? Thanks!

  15. A plea, a proposition

    Date: 02/05/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, css, html, hosting

    I need help. A lot of help.

    I have been designing (using the term very loosely) for nearly a decade now but it seems that I can't wrap my head around more than just basic HTML and I was wondering if anyone would be interested in tutoring and helping me learn effective CSS and PHP (I've been using CSS for years but mostly just eyeballing things, copying and pasting, trial and error; a lot of my code is messy, redundant, or useless and I can't seem to get the hang of styling outside of iframes). I know there are many, many layout journals and sites but not many of them offer personal help. In return I can offer you hosting on an amazing server, or I could even pay you if we can't work anything else out. I have a lot of ideas for designs and sites, I just can't seem to get them into code.

  16. PHP webmail / Dreamhost

    Date: 02/18/07 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, web, hosting, apache

    I have Dreamhost for my mail and hosting package, but I abhore Squirrelmail. So I'm researching other PHP webmail systems that I can install without too much trouble, because I'm not very familiar with installing things from the source.

    I loved Horde when I had them on my previous host, so I'm trying to install that. I haven't quite gotten to the install part yet - I'm on the Prerequisites part! I've been starting to install PHP5 (with these and these instructions) and I'm trying to make sure I get all the extra packages downloaded and whatnot before I start with the configure script. But I'm confused at a few things.

    1. Dreamhost says they like PHP to run as CGI but the Horde instructions say to configure it with --with=apache or -apxs or -apxs2. Neither of the install steps tutorials have it listed; would something bad happen if I ran it with -apxs?

    2. The tutorials also have --without-pear in the configuring, but I think I need it for Horde. Would I need to download additional packages before installing or can I just wait and install it afterwards?

    3. The Horde instructions say I need PECL modules but I absolutely cannot get fileinfo to install. It's late and I lost the error message, but since I'm doing everything from scratch, can someone tell me what I should be setting up beforehand and seeing (or not seeing) during installation?

    Thanks all.

  17. Hosting recommendations?

    Date: 02/19/07 (PHP Community)    Keywords: hosting

    Okay, after a plethora of problems in the last month, my hosting company has decided to up the price. I got almost two years free out of them (mates rates), but when you combine two moves of server hosts and numerous problems with a rate increase -- and to really uncompetitive rates, it's time to move on, mate or not.

    So I'm looking for recommendations: I've heard about Dreamhost but I'm looking for your experiences with them.

    Anyone else you guys would recommend? I have until the end of this month to decide.

    I used to work in web hosting and domain registration and the like. But I've been out of it for the last 2 and half years focusing on backup and disaster recovery. Anyway, does anyone know of a "good" hosting and domain registration service? I know from experience that a lot of these companies will milk you for every dollar they can and you need to have a company that is on the up and up. Has anyone had good experience with a particular company?
    The site will be a small specialty site. No commerce or what have you, but we will need email, and about 10 MB of space. This will be a business but should not have a lot of traffic. 10 hits per day average. If possibly, I would like to have the ability to do database (MySQL or PostgreSQL) and shell access but that is not a requirement.

    Thank you in advance for any help.

    }
    on (release) {
