Fetching erased data!
Date: 07/11/05
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: programming, web, linux
Okay guys, trust me I looked at the rules before posting this but I need some major help ASAP. I am quite experienced working with computers (Linux, Programming, web design, etc.) However, I haven't learned anything about finding old data that someone deleted from their computer or overrided.
My mother is a court reporter, she's spent this entire weekend working on an 800 page transcript. She somehow erased the entire document and then saved a blank document under the same name of the old document, therefore wiping out many hours of work. She is currently having a heart attack. I'm trying to figure out if there is a way to go back and fetch the data. I've told her not to save anything else until I see what I can do.
Can anyone please point me to how I might find the info and bring it back up? Please? She was dreading this particular job all week and I'd really like to help her get it back. Links, explainations, anything would be great help.
X-Posted, sorry if its not allowed, this is a bit too important to care much.

Hello!

(Computer Geeks) Keywords: programming, technology, linux
Hi, I've been watching this community for a couple of days now, so I guess I better introduce myself.
The name's Sam. I'm 17 years of age, currently doing a-levels in Milton keynes, england. I'm hoping to go to university next year, aiming for a degree in computer games technology in manchester, or computer games programming in Huddersfield. Haven't made my mind up yet.
If you haven't already noticed, I'm a total gaming nut. Mostly into rpgs, some strategies, and some first person shooters. Ooh, and I love retro gaming. I also run linux on my old box too. I tried to install it on my new box, but failed. I'm a total linux noob, but love it all the same.
My current system is an amd athlon 64 3400+ s939, geforce 6600, 1gb of ram, running xp and almost SuSE linux 9.2, but I'm still working on that.
My old pc is diabolical, and I don't know much about it, other than its a 750mhz amd with 128mb of ram and 32mb graphics card, running win98 and linux. Oh, and my other old pc is an oric.
I suppose you can find anything else about me from my geek code:

A Better Education?
Date: 07/21/05
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: programming
First post. *wave*
I'm currently a student at University of Alaska, Anchorage and I'm disappointed at what they are offering for the CS major. I'm trying to get a transfer to somewhere near Colorado (more specifically, Denver). I was wondering what opportunities are there, and which are the better ones. Cost is an issue, which is why I've considered ITT Tech. However I hear they specialize way too much and I only know that I'm going to try to go into programming (pretty precise, for a freshman ;). I've also heard from a friend that NMIT is really good, but it's pretty far off course from my desired locale.
Any suggestions?

Distributed development tool?
Date: 07/26/05
(PHP Community) Keywords: php, programming, software, database, sql, postgresql, web
Having recruited a small army to help me code, I've been trying to sort out a distributed development system. The only problem with this is the fact that I can't find a system that caters for what I need, and building one from scratch is a minor ballache (not to mention was taking far too long - that was my original tactic).
Basically, I need web software that does the following: Bug tracking, project and task management, static content, project and general discussion, SCM/version control (CVS/SVN preferably, SVN looks nicer, either can be installed as needed).
In real terms, I need something to be able to hand out documentation on the web, throw projects up that people can choose to take on, a bug tracking system (for obvious reasons), somewhere to talk about the projects and in general, and manage code. We've looked at GForge - it's nice, but requires PostgreSQL, and I don't have time to rewrite it into ADODB. Combining that with a wiki (or something similar) plus discussion board would probably fit it beautifully, but again, it'd also mean rewriting the login systems and integrating them - which would be a pain in the neck for two seperate database systems. Tried TUTOS, but it's unrefined, and missing many of the things we need - it's more resource and personnel planning. Flyspray is good for tracking bugs, and MediaWiki is good for static code. phpBB of course is an excellent piece of forum software. But none of them actually fit together. Writing a system to combine them is possible, but expensive in terms of time, as I said earlier.
I can't find anything that seems to fit the bill. I could write one, but it takes far too long, especially with a one-man programming team.
Is there anything that anyone knows of out there that may fit the bill? Either that, or it's going to be a long few days coding for me :-/

Programming (part two)
Date: 07/31/05
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: php, programming, software, css, html, xml, database, asp, sql, java, security, web
A few weeks ago, I asked about programming languages and which I should learn, and
your reaction had me thinking that I could have offered more info about what I hoped
to do with computers. My request was so vague that I can see why you found it difficult
to reply. Perhaps this time I'll do better.
To make things easier, I'm providing a list of what I want to do, and I ask you if you know
what languages or applications I should consider in order to fulfill my technological goals.
I'd like to:
- build web pages
- provide internet security for large & small clients
- make computer games
- build my own OS from scratch (a big task, I know)
- create, edit, download, and manipulate multi-media images and files
- develop application software
- build and manage my own server
- develop databases
- get a general feel for everything else, in case I ever need it
So my current list of stuff I wish to learn now includes:
- Java
- Java Script
- Perl
- C, C+, & C++
- PHP
- SQL
- CSS
- HTML
- XML
- Adobe Photoshop
- Adobe Illustrator
- Flash & Dreamweaver
- .Net (VB.net, ASP.net, C#)
- CGI
If you know anything about the above, feel free to post:
What are each of the above
used for? How did it come out? Are any of them similar or used for similar tasks?
Etc., etc., etc.
Finally, I was told to learn some Assembly language, but unless I am mistaken,
I think I learned that already. If someone could give me a rundown on what it is, I could
be sure if its what I think it is. I think I learned 8086 in my day (came with a card, too),
so all I have to do is review it I think.
Your help and suggestions are welcome and I thank you in advance for your time.

Trees
Date: 08/05/05
(PHP Community) Keywords: php, programming
I'm back to working on my project management program, and I'm having difficulty in planning how to store and then retrieve and show the tasks as being dependent on each other. As I've been going through this by hand as a preparation to programming it, it seems to me that the project path would be like a kind of tree that ends up connected back to itself.
I will probably have a table that contains the two task numbers and the type of association. That seems all well and good, but I'm not sure what to do with the information from there.
The question I have is this: Does anyone know of any good resources or have any good hints on developing tree structures in PHP? I haven't been able to find anything useful on the subject.

SetWindowsHookEx() in a Windows Service?
Date: 08/11/05
(C Sharp) Keywords: programming, software, xml, security, web, google
Hello all. First time posting -- I'm an executive/part owner of a small, 30-40 employee software development company in the US. Can't get any more specific, due to LJ drama that occurred in the past, from which I learned that my constant insistence upon plausible deniability is never a bad thing.
Anyway, all of our current contracts are in .NET, from winforms applications, to windows services, to webservices, to web applications. We write in C#.NET and VB.NET depending on the contract, application, and developer. We've been working with .NET for the past 2-3 years.
I don't do as much programming with my company as I did when I first started there as Lead Developer; a good deal of my responsibilities have changed to software design/architecture, scheduling, project management, and having my time wasted by as many meetings as possible, at the most inconvenient times.
So perhaps these latest developments will lend an excuse to the following ignorance. :)
I am writing an application for myself, completely unrelated to my company, in my "free time." It has a fairly eccentric variety of functionality, all of which is related in a certain way, but the functionality with which this post concerns itself is keypress logging.
I've written a class that uses the SetWindowsHookEx() WinAPI call to install a hook for keyboard events (using WH_KEYBOARD_LL). It sets up the hook, which simply raises an event (passing the keypress data along) before giving the keypress back to the system (which continues down the chain of installed hooks). I've written a parent class which attaches a method to the event that takes the useful information from the keypress data and stores it in a queue. The remainder of this parent class provides access to the queue, functionality to clear it, etc. The class that implements SetWindowsHookEx() is in a DLL (I wrote it as part of a separate application back when I was more comfortable with VB.NET, while the current project is in C#, thus the DLL), and the parent class (in C#) imports this DLL.
The class performs flawlessly in the Windows Forms application I wrote to test all of the classes destined to be part of the final solution. It properly logs all of the keypresses in its queue, its methods provide the proper access to the queue, and the test application could write the keypresses to a file, store them in an XML object, or whatever needed to happen. I was pleased, since the whole mess only took about 2 hours to develop and test.
However, the final application that will be doing the keylogging is a Windows Service. Now that I finished developing and testing all the classes I needed to use in the final application, I've begun building the service. I've got the service properly installing, starting, and logging to the system's event log, so I know the service itself is working. However, the keylogging class is not working. No exceptions are thrown, and the WinAPI call (from user32.dll) returns no error codes. However, the queue count remains at 0, and no keys are logged at all.
I've simply dragged the class from the test Winforms application into the Windows Service application, and used it in the same way. While keypresses were logged efforltessly in the Winforms application, not a single one is being logged in the Windows Service.
I have tried pretty much everything I can think of, from checking the "Allow this service to interact with the desktop" checkbox, to changing the account running the service (currently the Local System account). However, as I said above, programming is not a day-to-day thing for me anymore, so I am most likely ignorant of something here.
I've read many accounts via Google of people successfully using SetWindowsHookEx() in a Windows Service, so I know it can be done. What gives? Is this a permissions/security issue, and if so, why are no errors/exceptions being thrown? Do I need to register the DLL containing the class that calls SetWindowsHookEx() in the GAC for any reason?
Any information or help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance...!

Oko IDDE and DB-manager now shareware
Date: 08/18/05
(Computer Geeks) Keywords: programming, database, microsoft
We have finished testing Oko. It now becomes shareware. You can download an evaluation copy and/or purchase a registered copy on-line: www.ploko.net.
Oko is a development tool for building Windows applications. It uses an object-oriented programming language similar to C++ and has a rich set of visual tools that make application creation a relatively easy and intuitive task. Its integrated development environment allows you to create a wide range of functional units that can benefit both from the power of the language and the versatility of the GUI tools. An efficient code generator makes your source code compact and clear and lets you skip many explicit initializations. At the same time, code generation is configurable, so that you can insert your own code at any level, as well as turn off the automatic generation of any of the components.
Oko has a set of visual database tools that use ODBC to connect to data sources. It can generate data forms and provides a set of flexible data controls to facilitate the creation of database applications. For many tasks, Oko can replace systems such as Microsoft Access generating database applications with no programming involved. The advantage of Oko is that its applications are very compact, fast, and, of course, stand-alone. It also has a built-in report generator.
Oko produces either Win32 executables or dynamic link libraries (DLLs) from which you can export functions to be deployed in any other program. It creates stand-alone executables that need no other modules to run.

Database design
Date: 08/18/05
(SQL Server) Keywords: programming, database, sql
As part of my job I use T-SQL, mostly for writing stored procedures. So I'm familiar w/ select/insert/update/delete/cursor/view etc.. But I never created a complicated database or a table schema from scratch. We have a DBA who usually does that.
Now, our DBA is swamped, so my boss wants me to take a part of our project and design a database for it (to be reviewd by our DBA). While it's flattering that she thinks so highly of my abilities, I feel that I need some serious education before I take this on.
Please, advise me on a good book on database design!!! Preferably a clearly-written easy-to-read one (think Kernighan & Ritchie's "The C Programming Language ", not Stroustrup's "The C++ Programming Language"). If you don't know an easy-to-read one, a hard-to-read-but-very-informative will do!

Parallel method to help increase the solution quality
Date: 08/22/05
(Algorithms) Keywords: programming
Hi, my goal improve solution quality (or have the quality found/converged in less iterations) by running the sequential (heuristic agent like) algorithm in parallel in an island/colony mode. Each agent/ant colony searches for solution independently and after a period of time they exchange data with each other. This model is very much like genetic algorithm/programming.
Currently what I have is at S stages , each colony sends the best solution it founds to a central place, this center place then sends back the best solution to everyone and each colony will add a large amount of pheromones to this new solution upon receiving, so basically each new colony will a new pheromone config that will lean toward the new solution. I have implemented many other connection models such as ring (colony A sends to colony B, B->C, C->A etc), and use less greedy method by not sending the best but higher quality solution has a higher probablity of being used etc .
I do achieve better in average solution qualities , for example 3 colonies are better than 2 and 2 colonies better than 1 (sequential). But with 4 , 5 colonies I see the results are worst than 1 colony. Furthermore, the difference is not by much. I hope to get a large differences in average solution quality to show that parallel colony like this is beneficial as it increases the search space and its cooperative sharing manner.
Any idea or suggestion ? Thanks in advance

HTML before PHP?
Date: 08/31/05
(WebDesign) Keywords: php, programming, html, asp, java, web
Hi! I'm new to this community.
I am currently a graphic designer taking classes at RISD (Rhode Island
School of Design) for web design and development. I've completed most
of the DESIGN aspects of the certificate program and am working on the
PROGRAMMING/CODING part.
My only experience with programming of any sort comes from these
classes... "Actionscript in Flash" and "Javascript for
Non-programmers." Any other HTML I know is what I've picked up from LJ
and using the dual split screen in Dreamweaver.
I am for sure enrollling in the HTML class. But the PHP class I want
to take (two in one semester would be ideal) has an HTML prereq.
Can I handle it?
How hard is learning PHP?
Should I take the two classes simultaneously this fall semester?
Or should I take the HTML class, let it soak in until next spring, and then do the PHP?
Pros to PHP now...
1) I know someone in the class
2) I'd hopefully be able to incorporate what I learn into a website I'm supposed to create this fall...
Cons to PHP now...
1) Getting totally and completely lost and not learning anything from the class...
Thanks for your help and opinions. I'd really appreciate it!

I need advice...or somehing
Date: 09/07/05
(WebDesign) Keywords: programming, templates, web
Help. Tell me what to do.
Sorry in advance for the length...but I have to tell it all:
There is an affilliate of the University of Florida (the major college in my town) called University Press. I got a tip from a business associate to bid on revamping their website. I spoke with him on the phone and got the details...we had a long conversation and I provided him with a quote for design and build out...I excluded programming from the quote because HE is the one in the office who handles that. He was only looking for design and build out. He called me in to talk and we had a long "interview" about the project. He mentioned that I was better prepared then many others he had talked to...so on and so on. He then asked how comfortable I was with plugging everything and programming after I was finished with the design. I am not a programmer at all. I myself could not do that part, but I have resources that could. He put it in such a way that I thought he was just wondering, but that it was no big deal. He then told me that he had a small networking thing going on the side and was often asked about web design. He wanted to know if I was interested in that type of side work. I told him that he could contact me for that of he wanted and I would see what I could do. He sent me a small site re-do to quote out which I did quote. He contacted me and told me that my rates ( $30/hr) were a little high and wanted to know what my "freelance designer" rates were rather then my business rates. ??? They are one in the same in most all cases unless I'm working with someone. I worked with him a little on the price and then he hit me with this...
"I really want to get my business off the ground so you do understand that your name won't be anywhere on the site at all right?" I expressed discomfort with that, but was willing to just put one line at the bottom of the site about design only - I didn't want to discard all credit though. Then he tells me that since I'm not offering programming for UF Press and other bidders were he'd cut me a deal. He said he would put his little company name on the bottom of the site since he was doing the programming (which is his JOB) and mine would not be there at all. UF Press is where he WORKS...his full time job. This site has nothing to do with him personally. He then told me that they were going to hire him to do it, but that he said he didnt want to do the design portion. I found out that he doesn't know how to design or how to use the programs used for design, so he can't do it. I told him that I would gladly quote the programming end if needed, but that I was NOT comfortable with his way of doing things and that I would not relinquish credit for my part. Now I have found myself in a position where he is almost putting himself against me as competition. ????
I just went to his website which a purchased flash template with 3 other purchased templates in the "portfolio" section. He has no clients at all.
Do I go above his head and let them know what he's doing? I am sure they have no clue. It really pissed me off. What do I do? Did I do the right thing? :(
