1. Looking For A Mid-Level Introduction To Object-Oriented Programming In PHP

Date: 04/17/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, programming, java, shopping

I'm a reasonably-experienced PHP programmer, but aside from minor tweakings in JavaScript and PERL, PHP's the only language I know. I'm redesigning my core shopping cart, and as such I'd really like to learn how Object-Oriented programming works, since I think that refactoring the back end to create, say, user objects and cart objects and inventory objects so forth would be much easier to maintain.

Unfortunately, the OO books and pages I've found tend to break down into two rough categories:

    • "Hi, you know the fine details of object-oriented programming, so here's a bunch of complex PHP syntax that you will barely understand!"
    • "These are the basic ideas behind PHP Object-Oriented programming, but I will give you no code aside from a single class, when in practice you apparently never use isolated classes."
I've read up on the basics and even a lot of design patterns... But can anyone recommend a book/site that explains how you'd put together several classes to create a functioning object-oriented program with classes that interact, explaining in practical terms (and plain English) the difference between, say, this->function() and this::function()?

I need the power. And the help.

  3. Help me! I am a graphic designer in over my head!

Date: 05/02/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: css, html, java, security, web, hosting, shopping

Hello all-- hoping to get some advice about security, and/or online stores. I am designing a website for a friend of the family and she wants it not only to be informational but also for customers to be able to order products online. She really has no idea what she is asking for because she doesn't really know how any of this works. I am a graphic design student who is familiar with html, css and some java script but I don't know ANYthing about ssl or encryption or anything.

So, I have looked at websites like Verisign, who offer certificates and I have this question: what does that actually do for a business?

And I have viseted sites such as Networksolutions.com who offer secure hosting with a shopping cart pachage and what not for $99/month... and I am wondering is this pretty much standard for hosting? Can I do better?

I am sorry if these are all really obvious questions. I have read books and searched online but nothing is better than personal experience and advice.

If you don't know the answer, perhaps you know who I might ask who might... I was thinking perhaps the business owner could contact her credit card company (the service through which she accepts credit cards), and they could probably give her some idea as to what to do to accept credit cards online...

Anyhow. I have known this woman my whole life and I am doing this for free (because she is desperate and isn't making a lot of money yet and because I am so underqualified... obviously).

i'm looking for a very customizable (& easy to do so at that) shopping cart system. I'm leaning towards http://cubecart.com/site/home/

does anyone have any experience with them or have any other suggestions? it doesn't have to be free, but the cheaper the better (free is also good). oscommerce seems to get bad reviews, zencart seems like a pain to customize & mals doesn't seem very flexible. thoughts?

I have a quick question about making an online store. I already know XHTML and CSS but as far as i know i cant make a shopping cart with just this. I think PHP and MySQL is what i need to learn but is that all i need or would i have to dig deeper into programing with something like OOP with Java or JPS?

hi everyone. i need to ask about shopping cart technology/e-commerce solutions. im sure it's been discussed before but there is so much information to digest.

all i want are some recommendations. cheaper is better. the layout of the store should be as flexible as possible (none of this template crap).

i have used volusion before, and i was not very happy with them at all. horrible tech support and lies about flexibility.

  9. and on another note . . .

Date: 07/07/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: ecommerce, css, web, shopping

    another question for you all.

i am about to begin a website refresh project. basically, they want: a flash video, more streamlined nav, a conversion of a hard copy book into a pdf, add a tickertape for news, clean up styling inconsistencies, and maybe add a shopping cart if they can afford it.

my main question is this: i just looked at the source and realized it's all tables. is it even worth suggesting a total coding overhaul to CSS? it wouldn't add much to the user experience (aside from accessability) but it sure would make updating easier. the biggest problem is that i'd have to charge them at least 2 grand more than their budget to do this. should i bother?

next question: does 8 grand sound like a reasonable estimate for the work (not including the shopping cart)? i way overestimated my hours to get that number, but i ALWAYS underestimate. plus, if they went through a firm and not a freelancer, they'd get charged at least 3 times that.

next: how much do you charge to add a shopping cart? originally i was going to say 4 grand, but that puts it way out of their budget. so i brought it down to 2 grand. the thing is that i'm not exactly an ecommerce expert so i know it'll be a lot of work.

any replies would be awesome, i have to send this proposal out today. thanks!

  10. data managment?

can anyone recommend a good php script or program that would be good for the following?:

i want to create a website that has a section for me to post recipes. the index page for the recipe sections, i want to be thumbnail's of a photo of each recipe (instead of just a text link - see FIGURE A). when you click the thumbnail, i want it to go to a page where i can put text and photos for the actual recipe page. i want to be able to categorize the recipes on the index page, so when i enter them, they appear in the correct section on the index page.. and only thumbnails for the most recent 4 or 5 recipes show on the index page. if you click on the "view more" button, or the category title, it takes you to another index type page with thumbnails of all of the recipes in that category (see FIGURE B).

    FIGURE B:

i've worked a bit with customizing php (shopping carts), and i was wondering if anyone can point me in the direction to a good script or data entry program that might be able to help me to achieve this. i want to do it in php so i can easily update recipes, etc. i might eventually incorperate the same software/script to display crafts and projects.

  12. Shopping Site

Date: 08/01/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: web, yahoo, shopping

    Hey guys,

I'm building a shopping site for a small business that wants a marketplace (shopping cart, credit card payments, etc) integrated with its inventory system. The site needs to have order processing, shipping tools, and inventory management features. Kind of like Amazon.com on a micro scale.

I found a couple of companies that offer solutions to web developers with this focus. Yahoo Small Business (www.smallbusiness.yahoo.com) looks pretty convenient. It uses step-by-step guides to walk the new users through the sign up process and there are other visual tools to compare their services. I also checked out Paypal's site but found that site to be incredibly complicated, especially after seeing Yahoo's site.

All things being equal, I'm leaning towards using Yahoo when I'm setting up the shopping site. But I just thought I'd come here and ask if you know of any other companies out there that you found easy to work with and would recommend.

    THANKS!!

  13. Web Developers: How easy is it to set up Drupal for a site?

Date: 08/05/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: cms, php, mysql, database, sql, web, hosting, shopping

Sooo, I am 98% sure I'm taking on a client where I need to implement a CMS for him to make changes to the site if necessary. When I first wrote the quote a few months ago, I suggested Drupal as the CMS because it was free, looked rather customizable and somewhat easy to use. I have limited experience writing PHP and dealing with MySQL databases but understand the mechanics of it.

This particular client is offering subscriptions to a database of business industry contacts. There will be about 500 contacts on the pay list (including name, office, affiliation, etc) and he will add to the list about every three months or so. What he will change on a regular monthly basis will be the articles he writes. The subscription concept then requires a shopping cart/check out system as well as a password/username management system for each user.

Would Drupal be a good way to go for both my client and for me? Also, I'm switching web hosts and am considering becoming a reseller. Is there a web host that has it installed already? Door Host ( http://www.doorhost.net/ ) used to have it, but I don't think they do anymore. I'm considering going with Total Choice Hosting buying either their basic reseller plan or the regular Deluxe Plan.

Nonetheless, who has used this or other comparable CMSs and which do you prefer and why?

    Drupal: http://www.drupal.org/

    Sites built with Drupal:
    http://www.terminus1525.ca
    http://urlgreyhot.com/personal/
    http://www.spreadfirefox.com/
    http://www.theonion.com/
    http://www.echoditto.com/

Oh, I just found this Drupal web hosting company called Site Ground that has all of the major CMSs installed already and gives you 24,000 MB of space. Anyone heard of them? I also found these guys: Canaca.com.

  14. php payment methods

Date: 08/11/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: web, shopping

    Hello,

I was wondering if anyone might have any suggestions for taking credit card payments from a website. I don't need a traditional shopping cart, as it's not as simple as selecting a product and using a shopping cart to pay. What I need to do is have my site generate the cost due (which I'm working on) and then have the user click a link to pay, at which time they enter their credit card info.

    Thanks for your time

  17. Three Questions

Date: 10/02/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: php, css, html, web, shopping

I am considering enrolling and attending the Art Institute Online for graphic design. I may go back for the Web Design Diploma if I like it but I figured the actual graphic design would require more formal education than the web design would. Does anyone have experience with AI or know someone who does? I would love to hear about it.

Has anyone ever coded a webpage in Lisp? I am working on putting together my own website to sell Body Jewelry and my husband thinks we should code the checkout/shopping cart/etc., in lisp and do all the pretty stuff in HTML/CSS. He's always been rather fond of lisp but I'm not sure of using it in this format. He is against PHP because he believes it has a lot of flaws and leaks though PHP appears to be the most popular as of late. What do you folks think?

I recently came across this program called ReCapture. Basically when someone prepares to checkout and are filling out their information, but leave before officially submitting it, this program notifies the owner of the website. If enough information is filled in, like phone number and/or e-mail, the owner can then contact that person to find out why they stopped the checkout process. It's suppose to be used more as a customer service tool then as a seller tool. The owner/employees who call are not suppose to insist the person buys something or offer them other products, but just try to find out if the potential customer left for a reason they can fix, or if they just forget provide a reminder, or if they have questions answers them. I'm a little unsure about it, because I think it's a little envasive but a couple people I know rave about it. What do you guys think? (Also, the company can not sell/trade/etc., that contact information be in violation of the NDA. The same goes for trying to sell.)

  18. Flash Sizing

Date: 10/05/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: web, shopping

I have this "challenging" site I must develop and as there are design elements such as headlines, text and images overlapping and in non-standard for web fonts I've found no other option than to develop these portions in Flash. Also this site must be integrated with an existing shopping cart system so doing it entirely in Flash is not an option at this point.
Anyhow I would like to embed the Flash so it proportionally sizes to the screen width. When I specify no border parts are cropped off at certain screen sizes and with exact fit, the content is distorted. If you couldn't tell I am not very experienced with Flash and I'd appreciate any suggestions anyone my have.
