  2. all men condemned by men to die

Date: 10/16/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software, virus, microsoft

There are no stupid questions, only stupid people.

My mother runs an older PC. Windows ME, small memory, etc. It’s what you would have expected to get by default six or seven years ago, from big box retailer. I don’t really remember all the specifics of it, and the majority of the paperwork is misplaced.

Despite having to reformat the hard-drive four times over six years, the PC’s been working fine for the last two and a half. Now, the machine reboots on shutdown and has a box that pops up prior to downloading the desktop asking for a password (you can bypass the box by clicking escape).

I reinstalled all her drivers and checked her hard drive for errors, but there was nothing. It’s also virus and spy-ware clean (there’s a possibility I’ve missed some, always). We recently installed DSL. She only uses the Internet, Microsoft Outlook, Firefox, the calculator, and the system tools (like scan disk and disk defrag). She also has software for her camera (so she can format pictures and send then over email), but she doesn’t edit her photos besides reducing them in size.

I’m not against reformatting her hard drive once again, although I’d rather not unless there’s no other way.

Buying a new/used PC isn’t an option. Nor is upgrading to Windows XP (she doesn’t have the memory to support it and I have a feeling that within the next two years, it’ll be completely overtaken by Vista).

Any solution or advice is really welcome. My computer-fu isn’t what it used to be and I really do want to fix it for her.

  10. Useful tool

Date: 10/27/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, software, web, linux

Note: This is commercial software, but I am not affiliated or paid for endorsing it.

A little bit ago I started using sshfs which is a open source system tool that mounts remote directories to a local directory via ssh (encrypted secure connection) and I thought it would be cool if there was something similar for the Windows world. After googling and asking a lot of people, the link below was the best I could find. Basically what it does is make a drive map to a remote ftp / sftp server and expose the files there to your machine. The only problem I have with it is the price $20+. It's not exactly cheap, but when your the only person in town with a really useful service, I guess you can set whatever price you want.

    Why this is useful?
Before I would use Dream weaver to keep my files sync'd, even when I used 2+ other IDE's and file editing tools. It wasn't exactly perfect but it worked in a half-assed way. Now with webdrive, the files appear local to any tool (Komodo, php, eclipse, python) but when you change them, it updates the remote as well.

    http://www.webdrive.com/

Otherwise, anyone know of something cheaper/similar?  The only other idea I had was to use sshfs on my linux server like so remote_files -> local_linux.sshfs -> remote_local.samba -> windows workstation.   If the last sentence didn't make sense, then just know that it would be tedious to do.

  14. Dreamweaver 8 vs GoLive CS2

Date: 11/02/06 (WebDesign)    Keywords: software, web

Very part time designer here- I usually stick to projects that are relatively low-tech since I left my last job with lots of great hardware and software.

However, I just recently invested in a new iBook, CS2 and Macromedia Studio 8 (suuure, I'm a student). Before I was working on a 4 year old machine and doing all my images for the handful of web projects I have in Illustrator and hand coding the rest with a little help from source/layout views. Now I have all these great tools and I'm not sure where to start! I've never played with GoLive before and I'm wading through the tutorials now... It's been several years since I've used Dreamweaver and I haven't gotten a chance to look at this version.

I'm curious what you all are using... Is there any reason to even look at GoLive or should I concentrate my efforts on Dreamweaver? Plusses? Minusus? Good resources to find folks engaged in this dialogue?

    Thanks in advance- Brook

  16. Please Help!

Date: 11/03/06 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software, spyware, microsoft

My dell laptop is fairly new (got in in July 06) and it started causes problems from the start without even getting on the Internet. A whole range, I could tell you them but that would take forever my main two problems:

My system/computer is deleting some stuff of mine (i.e music, word documents) (started about a month ago) I deleted that user account after all my fles got delted, it started after I did this LogMien thing with someone to detect my cd drive problem. This user account deletes and moves some of my files but I am saving them not such a big problem. Anyone know any good place to save files? I currently use GMail and eSnips.

My optical/CD drive is not being detected (Started about two months ago)

I heard the best thing to do is to some how save my files and then reinstall my Windows XP (the system or program I have) My main two questions are:

Does reinstalling Windows XP fix the optical drive?
Can I reinstall Windows XP using the WINNT32, since my CD drive is not being detected?

I cannot take it in so please don't say that as an option, any help please?

What is C:\WINDOWS\system32\fxscom.dll do I need that? It says it is missing in my Abexo
Also my internet has been not working well and very slow and sometimes I can get on, and sometimes I can't
And my computer space has been going down what could cause this?

Operating System: Microsoft Windows XP, Home Edition Version 2002, Service Pack 2
    Computer: Dell Inspiron 6400
Memory: (c drive): 450MB (it was 4.65GB yesterday)
Broswer: FireFox 1.5 and Mozilla 1.7
What is the processor speed of your CPU?

Have you recently installed or uninstalled any software or hardware? If so, what?
    A lot to save space:
    (uninstalled)
    Adobe Photoshop Elements
    Yahtzee
MicroSoft ActiveX Control Pad (and installed)

    (installed)
    StartUp
    ArtTray
    NoteTab Light
    4Tray (and uninstalled
    Mozilla Thunderbird

    Anti-Malware programs:
    Ad Adware SE Personal
    Spybot S&D
    AVG
    Abexo
    CCleaner
    AdvancedWindowsCare V2 Personal
    SUPERAntiSpyware
    Spyware Blaster

    Some links I checked out:
    WIndows Install
    Windows Reinstall Two
    Should that be okay?
