1. hi everyone

Date: 08/16/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web, google

so, I'm starting to offer my abilities as a freelance web designer. I know everything I need to do, and the most important thing right now is writing a contract that I will use with clients. I have a couple of references but I'm looking for more. Does anyone have any examples and references for contracts? Thanks in advance, I'm off to google it.

    Hi,

We have developed a web content management system for web designers to offer their clients the ability to have powerful integrated modules but also the ability to update their sites themselves. Our solution was built with the web designer in mind. Any design can be integrated in minutes. Our editor was built with the end user in mind which makes for a powerful combination.

We are looking for web designers that want to add a new tool to their bag.

Please contact me for a live demonstration.

  4. Search Engine Marketing/Optimization

Date: 08/16/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: software, technology, web, seo

Today is my second day working at a web development company and I discovered that I am going to be "heading-up" one of the services we offer, which is search engine marketing/optimization. The owner of the company has asked me to re-think the process they have been using for this in the past because it's become outdated (using the same method for 6 years when you're dealing with technology is way too long).

Do any of you have any websites, programs, or methods for search engine optimization/marketing that would be worth looking into?

The program that we are using for SEO is called Web Position Gold 2. If you know anything about this program, what are your opinions as far as how it compares to other SEO systems? The version we are running is somewhat old, and one of my options is to upgrade to the newest version (Web Position Gold 3 Platinum), but if there is better software out there I would like to look into that.

  5. Take Your Firefox To The Beauty Parlor

Date: 08/16/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser, web

If you are tired of looking at your same antiquated and dull-looking Firefox; please don't switch to another browser. Just add cosmetics and an imaginative attitude. Your creation: a smooth-graded-silver color browser with cute rounded corners for URL and search bars. Add to that a note taking extension with advanced features and the ability to iconify your menus and pop ups. Now you'll love to take Firefox for a ride with flying colors.

If you want all of the above, this is your lucky day. I just found this web page owned by Mauro Bartocelli who developed the Silver Skin theme for Firefox. Kindly click the following URL and send your browser to the beauty parlor:

I truly hope you like it.

    Cheers,

    Omar.-

Hey guys, this time I have a question not about my computer but my brothers.

Lately, it has been randomly shutting down. When it does, the entire screen goes black and the tower...sings? It plays 4 deep notes...Do sol Do Sol if anyone has studied Solfage.

He had a host of Adware and 4 trojans, all of which have been removed but the problem persists.

  7. Volume Control / Webcam

Date: 08/16/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: web, yahoo

    Howdy.
I seem to be having trouble with the volume/sound on my computer.
    I can't hear music, I can't hear sounds, I can't hear anything.
I turn up the volume and nothing happens except a buzzing noise.
I tried to go to start > programs > accessories > entertainment > volume control, to see if there was a problem, but nothing comes up when I click it.

The speakers are plugged into the computer the way they're supposed to be.
Could it be the sound card or something?

    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------

Second problem is, when I try to use my webcam on MSN messenger, it pauses for a moment and then says:

You have invited [ insert msn name here ] to start viewing webcam. Please wait for a response or Cancel (Alt+Q) the pending invitation.

Your conversation cannot begin because your camera is currently in use or not plugged in. Make sure your camera is available and try again.

You have canceled your invitation to start viewing webcam.

But the webcam works perfectly fine on yahoo messenger and PSP.
    I am so confused.
Someone please help me, thanks it is appreciated.

  8. RSS Validation Web Service

Date: 08/17/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: rss, asp, web, google

Does anyone know of a Web Service that will receive an RSS URL and return a boolean value that can be used in an automated application (ASP.NET VB.NET)? I'm working on something that manages RSS feeds and parses them in order to achieve some tasks however it would make life a lot easier if I could validate the feed before entering it into the system.

Does anyone know of a Web Service that does this?

I've been looking through google results and I found a reference to an alpha web service validator from way back in 2002, however it doesnt seem to be up anymore and I havent found any other links.

All other validators pretty much seem to explicitly say to not hit them with automated queries.

    any ideas?

  9. strange clicking noises from my computer

Date: 08/18/05 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: html, web

          Hello everyone-

I've been somewhat carefully been using a windows XP SP2 desktop (80GB hard drive, 768RAM, 2.8Ghz celeron...etc) for the past one and a half years. I recently had to move back home because the residence halls closed (heh) so I moved everything back, including my computer. I thought all I suffred was a minor glass scratch on my monitor, but today my computer has started making clicking noises from the inside.

The only times I ever hear any kind of noise remotely close to this kind of clicking is when I turn my comptuer off, so I'm assuming that if it isn't the sound of my power supply (nothing to click in there, really) or my CPU fan, then it could possibly be my hard drive. But I'm not really sure...

I was playing Ragnarok Online (a 3D game) for about four hours when I noticed the "click" noises were getting more and more frequent, until one of he clicks was followed by another sound that sounded a lot like something that had stopped turning. By then the game was frozen, and when I promted the start menu to pop-up, I got... whoa.. a winNT blue screen of death. I haven't seen ones of those screens on this machine, ever.

I rebooted after the blue screen, hoping it was just a quirk, but the comptuer booted up making clicking noises from the inside of the machine, and then gave me a "No Operating System Found" error. I rebooted again, and this time when I heard the clicking, I tilted my box a bit and then let it land with thump. ...and then my computer booted normally.

Naturally, I was sort of concerned so I looked online about hard drives clicking (assuming it IS my hard drive. Maybe other devices in the comptuer are also capable of making clicking noises?) and I found this:
    http://losangelescomputerhelp.com/computer_networking_news/hard-drive-clicking.html
...which of course sort of scared me, since I put all my useful computer stuff (including my spare crap computer) away in storage, and I really need my comptuer for tonight and tomorrow. It booted up for now though.. heh. ...But is this a serious problem? There are no clicking noises right now, and it seems like everything is OK, but I get the feeling the clicking noises will come back and, if that website isn't being too paranoid, that my hard drive might brake.

Anyone have experience with clicking noises coming from the tower? My hard drives (I have two wester digital drives in there = an 80GB master and a 160GB slave/each are less than two years old) have never made this kind of clicking noise, although I do know that the clicking noise is common in older hard drives. ..but this clicking was sporadic and scattered, unlike the natural clicking of older hard drives. oo;; please advise.

don't ask, thats how the client wants it to look (at least for now).

Hell I am just happy it renders correctly, but if the webdev community can nudge this along with hints I would be gratefully.

  13. help please!

Date: 08/20/05 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, web, hosting, apache

This is the first time using actual home made php code. I usually would go and just download a script and use it as is. This time using mostly original components of course all source and reference acquired through php.net. Anyways I am having some trouble though. Let me first give you an idea of my directory setup. I have 'web' as my root directory. And I am working in my 'emu' folder. So it all add's up to 'c:/web/emu'. And I am hosting this using apache, and am using a dns redirect service. My url is http://corpsegristle.dynu.com, and I am working on http://corpsegristle.dynu.com/emulation.php. I cannot just put '/emu' as the directory, I have to include '/web/emu' for it to load up the script and find the roms. But the problem relies in it including the "web" in the url. Notice:

    http://corpsegristle.dynu.com/web/emu/a/gen/Aero%20Blasters%20Genesis.rar -bad
    http://corpsegristle.dynu.com/emu/a/gen/Aero%20Blasters%20Genesis.rar -good

I need to somehow get this to only include "emu" oppose to including the "web" as well. Or maybe I am missing something all together here. I have tried to include the actual url to my site in the directory but that doesn't work. I appologize if this is a "noob" question. Still new to PHP.

They are copycatting, Apple's iTunes business model of selling or subscribing to music service over the Internet. They even designed a pretty looking music player named the Yahoo Music Engine. Well, to continue my sad story, I could not connect to "any" of their radio station. Instead, I got the following message: Error: Sorry, we do not support Netscape on the Windows platform. Error code 25-0.

Did I get the message right? Are Netscape's browsers being discriminated here? Has this happened to you? and if it has, what do you think? I felt rejected because I was using Firefox; in my opinion, the best web browser around.

I'm not happy, to put it mildly. I wrote them an e-mail expressing my disappointment, but as of this moment, no one has answered from Yahoo's Customer Service Department.

    Regards,

    Omar.-

  15. Hosting

Date: 08/20/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: web, hosting

My friends and I have a website.. a community of sorts for about 50 people. It has a chatroom, a calendar of events, blogs, photo galleries, etc.

    It's written quite efficiently, but:

Hosting companies don't like the load that it supposedly taxes their shared servers with (the load is probably larger than that of a portion of other users, but it's nothing outstanding).

So our current host, 1and1, is pushing us toward a dedicated server solution.

This is kinda nuts, because it's a site just for our group of friends. Our webmaster would not want to dish out his own money for a dedicated server, and collecting fees from friends every month would not really work.

Any suggestions are welcome. We're considering different things, some along the lines of running our own server from someone's house (the details of renting a dedicated line, etc. are sketchy.) Some about moving to a different host (but here we're not sure if the same thing will happen again.)

  16. layout not aligning right

Date: 08/20/05 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, web

Hi, I built an online portfolio using tables and it looks fine on Internet Explorer, but it doesn't align right with the background on Firefox. I have tried many different things to make it work right in both browsers, but to no avail.

The url to my site is http://www.umich.edu/~gujacq. Could anyone check my coding and help me with this problem? It's really getting on my nerves since 1) I don't even know what's causing the problem and 2) I don't know how to fix it.

(I'm probably going to crosspost this in several other web design communities, so sorry if this'll seem repetitive to some of you.)

    Date: 08/21/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: web

If you're a frequent traveler roaming thru Firefox's back roads, having the best compass with you, will be your guarantee that you won't get lost. Of course, this compass is FX's Help features. These features will benefit newbies and oldies as well.

To get there, click Help in the main menu--->Help Contents or (F1)--->"Welcome to Mozilla Firefox Help" screen.

    This is your guiding compass:

    * Glossary: Defines key terms
    * Index: Lists all topics alphabetically
    * Search: Lets you search built-in Mozilla Firefox Help
    * Contents: Shows main topic and sub-topic, such as:

    1. How to use Help
    2. Using Firefox Help
    3. Using the Download Manager
    4. Customization
    5. Options (Preferences)
    6. Controlling Pop-ups
    7. Managing Cookies
    8. Tabbed Browsing: Keyboard, Shortcuts and Mouse Shortcuts
    9. Menu Reference
    10. Help for ex-Internet Explorer Users

It's an excellent reference material if you feel lost in your daily web surfing. Finally, I wanted to share with you this beautiful Firefox icon which I hadn't seen before.

    Enjoy,

    Omar.-

  19. CMS/Application platforms

Date: 08/21/05 (PHP Community)    Keywords: cms, database, web

So I am about to start building a web site/application and I realized that using some form of platform would make my life easier. I have looked at XOOPS as well as ampoliros, Has anyone used these who would like to comment on what they are like to work in. Or if you have another CMS that you like please say something.

Also Both seem to spend a lot of time showing you how to use an existing module but in neither case could I find anything on how to build your own database drivien components in them.

  20. Digital watermarking

Date: 08/21/05 (Web Development)    Keywords: web

I am in the process of redesigning a website for a local artist and he have asked me to look into digital watermarking for his work. He wants to put digital images of some of his work online to act as a catalogue for galleries, but is concerned about copyright and theft. I do not think that the images we will be using will be of high enough quality for commercial theft (a whole other rant), but I said that I would look into the potential costs of digital watermarking.

This is something that I only have the smallest amount of knowledge about (i.e. that it is possible), so I was wondering whether anyone out there can give me a little information about possible sources and costs. Are there any solutions that you would recommend?
