1. Speakers not working

    Date: 07/11/06     Keywords: no keywords

    Sound is no longer audible from my speakers. At first I thought the problem was with the speakers themselves. My father brought the speakers to his house to see if they worked on his computer. They worked perfectly fine there. So I know the problem lies elsewhere. I just can't figure out what could be causing this problem. Suggestions as to what is causing this and how I could fix it would be greatly appreciated.

  2. heeeeeeeeeeelpppp :'(

    Date: 07/10/06     Keywords: software, java

    so, long story short I did a system restore on my XP.
    Now I went to open limewire, and it said I need to download the latest version of java.
    so, I go to java.com, and attempt a d/l....but java tells me that "We encountered an issue while trying to automatically install Java software onto your machine. "
    It then goes on about activeX control, but that bar doesn't even come up at all, so it's not that.
    is it that limewire could have been uninstalled, or something, and how do I fix this?

    thank you in advance.

  3. BraveSentry

    Date: 07/08/06     Keywords: spyware

    My computer is infected with BraveSentry spyware. I have no clue where it came from. Ad-aware won't find it and remove it so after some searching online I tried SpyHunter. The free trial scan of SpyHunter showed BraveSentry in several places. I purchased the full version so that I could remove the spyware. Now SpyHunter won't find it at all, but BraveSentry is still on my computer. Any ideas on how to get rid of this?

  4. A little modem help

    Date: 07/08/06     Keywords: no keywords

    To make a long story short, my laptop modems freaked out a few days ago, and all but my data fax modem have suddenly decided to appear under the Unknown category in my Device Manager. It will no longer connect to the internet, which is kind of irritating. I tried updating the drivers, but that didn't work. I was researching online for a solution, and ran across this as advice for how to solve a similar problem on Windows 98. I have XP. Does this sound like a reasonable suggestion? If not, what would help? Thanks in advance for any advice. I got as far as to find what I think is the problem, but I just don't know how to fix this.

    "Boot into Safe Mode by waiting until the memory and drive checks when the
    system starts are done then either hold down the Ctrl key or tap the F8 key
    several times before Windows starts. Go into the Device Manager and remove
    all modems, all unknown or problem devices. When you restart the devices
    will be gone from Device Manager ... but the drivers will still be there,
    Windows should then be able to sort the whole mess out, usually without
    having to reinstall the drivers. "

  5. A serious case of the restarts....

    Date: 07/07/06     Keywords: microsoft

    Pardon me...

    I'm currently using a (now) 7 month old desktop computer, relatively top of the line and such. Twice this past week though, there are times when the computer seems to have a bad error, because my monitor goes black, and it reboots.

    Were it not for my mozilla session saver, I would have lost a ton of stuff. The computer mentions some kind of bad error, and asks if I want to transmit that data back to Microsoft, but I don't understand what's going on.

    Questions:

    1. Is there some way I can retrieve the log of that error message so I can post it here for you to decipher? How do I do that?

    2. What could be the cause of the restarts? I'm tempted to say it's a bad case of dustbunnies, so I can convince my parentals to let me buy compressed air to clean the CPU tower and its insides... but I haven't really a clue.

    Thanks for reading, and I hope you folks can help me.

    Sincerely,
    Victor B.

    Do you need to have a phone line for DSL? My family is thinking about taking the landline phone out and just using cell phones since we aren't home too often anyway.

    Could we get DSL or is the only option cable?

    Date: 07/06/06     Keywords: no keywords

    Hi,

    I need to make subtitles to a video (in my case it is an interview to which I have the text and need to unite them both together).

    Could someone please, please tell me in what format the subtitles should be (I guess something time-related must also be present) and how to glue the subtitle file to the video?

    Thanks.

  8. Mozilla Thunderbird Inbox Setup

    Date: 07/04/06     Keywords: yahoo, microsoft

    Hey, guys. I'm trying to start that mozilla thunderbird program- the inbox. Well, I am having trouble and I thought one of you smart cpomputer people might be able to help me. Everytime I try to create a new account, it never can connect to my e-mail address. I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

    OK. So it asks me my name and email address. Easy.

    Then it asks me if I want POP or IMAP. I have tried both. Is there one I'm supposed to pick?

    Then it asks for my incoming server with the example "mail.example.net"
    Well, I have tried "mail.sbcglobal.net" "pop.sbcglobal.net" "imap.sbcglobal.net" Nothing is working.

    Then it asks me my incoming username- spacewine.

    Then my account name, which I leave as my e-mail address.

    My outgoing server- I don't know. I put "NULL" because that was on my outlook express mail, but I don't know if it's right. I never actually used my outlook express anyway, and when I try now, it keeps coming up with error messages:

    The host 'smtp' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly. Account: 'http', Server: 'smtp', Protocol: SMTP, Port: 25, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

    The host 'http' could not be found. Please verify that you have entered the server name correctly. Account: 'http', Server: 'http', Protocol: POP3, Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 11001, Error Number: 0x800CCC0D

    So, basically, I don't know what I'm doing. It's all a puzzle to me. Help??

    EDIT: I found out that sbctyahoo only supports these programs.
    * Outlook 2002 (XP) and 2003
    * Outlook 98 and 2000
    * Microsoft Outlook Express
    * Microsoft Outlook Express for Macintosh
    * Eudora 5.1 and higher
    * Netscape Mail: all versions
    * IncrediMail Build 618 and higher
    * Entourage 2001 and higher
    So I've been working on this forevevr for no reason.

  9. Hi, Firewall question ...

    Date: 07/01/06     Keywords: web

    I'm running EZ firewall 5.1 and I've just started to post on LJ.  I've discovered that I can't see images in entries linked off site (to photobucket for example) unless I turn the firewall off.  I've tried changing the settings to accept cookies, webbugs and private headers from LJ but nada.

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

  10. Wi-Fi and VOIP questions...

    Date: 06/30/06     Keywords: no keywords

    Hello!

    Here's my situation: I live in a WiFi hotspot w/several accessible networks. (I currently use a cable internet connection.) I also have VOIP for my landline. Here are my questions:

    1. Can I just go ahead and log on to any available open wireless network w/in range, or is that illegal?

    2. If I ditch the cable Internet and just use Wi-Fi to connect to the internet at home, (which I'd like to do,) are there going to be any major downsides?

    3. Of course, if I go w/Wi-Fi as my sole Internet connection, I want to download a program that will encrypt/protect whatever I send online. Any recommendations for such a program?

    4. If I go wireless, will my VOIP landline still work, or will I have to revert back to a traditional phone company? (Which I don't mind doing if this Wi-Fi thing works out; I'm just curious.)

    Thanks for all your help in advance! Cheers!

    Date: 06/28/06     Keywords: no keywords

    I'm trying to completely restore my computer but I'm having difficulty. When the calendar with the dates to choose from shows up, all is fine but I want to pick an earlier date and the arrows that lead to earlier months won't work for some unknown reason. I click on them but nothing happens. I should be able to view the previous months as I've not restored the computer before and I've had it for almost two years. But... nothing.

  13. DSL/Broadband, best price?

    Date: 06/27/06     Keywords: no keywords

    I apologize if this type of question isn't allowed, but I wanted to try. I currently have NetZero dialup, but my father wants us to get some sort of DSL/broadband internet.

    What company/type has the best service for the price? we don't need something immensely fast, just better than dialup, and capable of downloading, say, 3MB, without taking two hours, like ours does right now.

    Thank you!

  14. alternative (open source?) scanning software

    Date: 06/26/06     Keywords: software, web, google

    i already googled this and came up with nothing. i currently have an hp scanjet 4600 scanner on windows xp. i am totally fed up with the crappy software that came with it. it's buggy and works when it wants to and it's way to bloated, etc.

    so i was wondering if there was some kind of freeware or open source alternative scanning software. i tried to acquire within photoshop but nothing happened. i downloaded the "driver only" package from the hp website and tried to use that but nothing worked either. i don't need anything complicated, just something where i can select the area of the bed i want to scan, the resolution and maybe the file type or something like that.

    thanks a lot for your help in advance!

    What's the best way to remotely access my laptop from my desktop PC when they're connected via a wireless network?

    I need to change some settings on my laptop because it won't let me get in! I know what I'm doing once I'm in, but that's the part I can't figure out how to do.

    This blinks on my screen at a rapid pace. It used to only blink when I turn my computer on then last about 5 minutes but now it blinks the whole time the computer is on. I don't know what is causing these lines but it is very hard to do anything with them there all the time. Sometimes I can't even see the top of the screen. Can anyone help?

  18. Replacement laptop TFT screen sourcing

    Date: 06/24/06     Keywords: no keywords

    Last night, a tragic accident occurred. I caught a cable attached to my main laptop, and sent it flying off the 12" of the settee I was sat on. Which, to my horror, was enough to shatter it's TFT screen.

    I've had no luck so far sourcing a replacement screen. I can fit the damn thing myself, but I can't find any online. It's an AOpen 1551 (1551AW I think? But not certain) barebone laptop (obviously with components in now!). I've been crawling around looking for broken ones, or replacement TFT screens for it, to no avail. So far I've seen the odd whole kit for about £250. Which isn't good.

    It doesn't help that it's an X-Black display, which means cost++.

    If anyone has any idea where to source one of these in the UK, I would much appreciate some guidance. I'm contacting AOpen themselves to see what they can do for me too.

    Thanks in advance. Apologies to those who see this more than once, it was cross posted a bit.

  19. Laptop monitor... destroyed part 2

    Date: 06/23/06     Keywords: no keywords

    Sorry, this is a post in reference to the previous one. I don't know how to respond to comments and add photos, so I'm making a new post altogether. Behind the cut are links to the images of my laptop and the information on the bottom. As I said in my earlier post, for the interim I am just trying to figure out if I can hook up a pc monitor and use the keyboard from the broken laptop. In a month or two, I would hope to replace the monitor, but as some people have mentioned, it might be impossible. I can't begin to explain how upset I am about this, so any help is much appreciated. Thank you.

  20. Recent problem with GIF's

    Date: 06/23/06     Keywords: browser

    I just noticed this last tonight, but now whenever i'm looking at .gif icons or avatars, the picture is very grainy and pixel-ilated. So the picture is not blending together well.

    I first noticed this when looking at my Forums avatars, and then on everyone else's avatars that are .gif's. I then went through my Photobucket and it's all the same. All my Gif's are like retarded looking now; but it seems to only be affecting the Gif's.

    I've posted my problem on 3 other sites (2 of my forums, and my LJ) and I've heard that it's something about DLL files or something, but i'm not 100% sure about that.

    The only thing i've installed or re-installed in the timespan that this all started to happen was the game "Red Alert 2". I uninstalled the game after playing a few rounds and getting bored with it quickly, and noticed some of the pictures (which I now assume to be GIF's) looking weird, but everything else was fine until last night. I cleared the Cache for my Firefox browser and then I immeditly noticed the problem.

    Any idea on what's wrong with my computer, and how to fix it?

    The worst part is, I have 2 College Research Papers that I need to get done, and all I can think about is 'Why is my computer screwing up?"

    Oh, and this has happened to my old computer very long ago. However, this computer that now has the problem is only a year and a half old.

    I am using Windows XP, and my old computer was Windows 98.
