1. Computer will not shut down / enter standby

Date: 06/15/05     Keywords: security, spyware, microsoft

    Alllllllllllllllllllllrighty-then...

Please forgive me... the results list is a bit long...

For a little while now, my computer has refused to enter Standby or Shut Down completely. In both cases, it will try to do one of the two, and then freeze. It is becoming highly annoying. I have WinXP - SP2. I have Norton Internet Security 2005, Norton Systemworks 2005, and Norton GoBack 4.0. I suspect it might be one of these, seeing as it started happening shortly after they were installed. I also have Ad-Aware SE Professional 1.06r1, Spybot S&D 1.4, HiackThis v1.99.1, and Microsoft AntiSpyware Beta 1 (which is going to expire at the end of July...). They have detected the following:

  2. Dial-Up Problem

    Date: 06/15/05     Keywords: no keywords

My main problem is behind the first lj-cut since it's kinda long. And behind the second lj-cut is just a showing of how terrible my laptop is.

About a week or 2 ago, we had a thunder storm. I was online at the time and suddenly I got kicked off. I tried to get back on but it never went through. I tried again later and it worked but all of a sudden, my connection got EXTREMELY SLOW. It has been like this since.

For example, the speed of downloads before this happened was about 5 KBs per second. Now after this happened, they dropped down to about 700-800 bytes per second.

Absolutely no sites load as fast as they did (it was never that fast to begin with but they actually loaded in a minute or so. Now, every site that took a minute or so to load, now takes about an hour to load (kinda over-exaggerating that but you get the point). The only site that loads somewhat normal is LJ. It took some time to just to load this community due to some of the screen caps.

I have no clue what happened. Was it the fact that it started happening when I got kicked off during a storm?

I've tried EVERYTHING to fix it. I waited HOURS for the NetZero help sites to load to find anything. Absolutely nothing worked. I upgraded NetZero which took an hour to download despite it should've taken a few minutes. I re-installed that THOUSANDS of times. I tried different access numbers. Nothing works. And I'm not contacting the NetZero support team because I've heard that their support is terrible.

Anyone have any ideas of what I should do? Help PLEASE!

Just to give you all an idea of how horrible my laptop is:

    -Windows 98
    -AuthenticAMD AMD-K6(tm) 3D processor
    -32MB RAM
    -NeoMagic MagicGraph128XD
    -Compaq Presario 56K-DF modem
    -2.00 GB hard drive

and so on...this thing is just scary...

  5. Drivers Error

    Date: 06/14/05     Keywords: no keywords

I got my computer repaired several weeks ago, and have been having problems since then - whenever I play Sims 2 or any DVD for that matter, it would freeze up the program, or the computer for that matter (for the Sims 2 error - display driver stopped working). I called IBM for help, but they seem to have misunderstood me so they couldn't do much help :( (they said my drivers were fine). I asked a friend, but all he could do was laugh at my misfortune, and refuses to help me at all (there's no other person to turn to either). I even went on a Sims 2 Forum board for some help, the only suggestions they would give me would be sites to update drivers, but that didn't help much since I don't know much about computers and am afraid to tamper with it. I feel so lost and hopeless. Its so frustrating because I just got my computer fixed, and its still messed up as ever >_<; I use to play Sims 2/any DVD without any problems before it got fixed. HELP! Procedures will do...if you have more questions, just ask...

  6. hi...here's my problem

    Date: 06/14/05     Keywords: software

The other day I found a laptop that was discarded with some junk and decided to try my luck. It's a Compaq Presario 1500 and it seemed to be in good working order, and I have used it for a few days. However, this evening while I was using it, it froze and then wouldn't restart. Every time I turned it on it would go on, but just go to a black screen and windows wouldn't start. Eventually the computer would just shut off automatically. I was wondering if anyone had any idea what the problem could be. I'm not really sure if it's a hardware or software problem. Being as I found this thing I don't want to put much money into it, but if it's something small I wouldn't mind taking a chance.

    Thanks!

P.S. If you need anymore info, let me know and I'll do my best to tell you!

How do you get your Yahoo! Avatars out of yahoo! and into the "real world"? I've been noticing that some people are using their avatars that they created with Macromedia Flash on other journal sites (and some even here). Do you have to have the flaspix program (or something similar. The name excapes me at the moment) to be able to do that?

    Not very important.

    Just wondering.

    Thanks.

  9. regarding videos

    Date: 06/13/05     Keywords: no keywords

I was at a local show tonight, and I used the video mode on my digital camera to record bits of a few bands' performances. Problem is, I was holding my camera vertically so that people would fit in the screen better. Silly me shouldn't have been surprised to later view the videos on my computer and see they were all sideways.

This is what my videos look like right now:

Tilting my head to the side to watch them is less than fun.
So, does anyone know how I can rotate the videos to make them upright? Is that even possible?

  10. HELP!

    Date: 06/12/05     Keywords: no keywords

I have a laptop from Gateway, with home edition of windows XP on it. Gateway went bankrupt so I can't call them for support, and I can't call Windows support without being charged $35. So maybe someone else can figure this out.

I know on my Desktop that I got from walmart, there is a button on the moniter that lets me do all sorts of things to the screen. de-magnitize it, make it longer, shorter, wahtever. Well I was away, my cats must have stepped on a button on my laptop because when I came back, the computer was on the black screen (which it does sometimes) and when I touched the pad, the screensaver showed up frozen. I turned off the computer, let it cool off, (morons put the fan on the bottom of the laptop so it overheats easily) restarted it and everything went smoothly. the screens were going, the usual little windows logo with a loading sign, blah blah checking discs, then when it said "loging on" my screen rotated counter clockwise! the top of my windows are now on the left side, and my pad responds to up down left right in a counter clockwise way too. I don't want to keep my head tilted left to look at everything. someone please, HELP!

  11. Zone Alarm woes and disappering programs (I think)

Date: 06/11/05     Keywords: software, asp, security

I just updated to the newest version of Zone Alarm Security Suite. I've been having issues with it since. I've been trying to uninstall the program but that's been a bust so far as I keep getting this error message:

TrueVector Internet Monitor was not uninstalled.
The uninstaller was not able to stop the True Vector software services. This will happen if other software is using the True Vector Engine.

To uninstall make sure all other True Vector based programs have been closed.

Another problem that I am having is that my add/remove program list is acting all wonky. Instead of regular program names such as Nero burning rom and Winamp, it's being populated by aspi, CCHelp, CCScore, etc.

I would really appreciate it if anyone out there would help me out.

It's also my first post here so hello ^^

[edit]When I try to start up ZA, this error pops up.

  12. plagueish Norton and sluggishness (I'm probably one of those stupid people you always hear about)

    Date: 06/10/05     Keywords: software

    The First Thing -

Er. I became really anoyed with Norton recently (it is a very long story, and I think it really makes me look like an idiot, so I won't recount it completely), and tried to delete it. I really tried.

It won't go away. Now everytime I turn on my computer, it asks me to uninstall then install Norton.
As always, I went to the control panel / remove software place to try delete it, but this has clearly not worked, as only half of ol' Norton seems to have dissapeared. The other half won't go away. What can I do to get rid of this second and unwanted half of Norton? Will this place help me at all?

    The Second Thing -

My computer is new, possibly a month or so old. It's windows XP, has lots of shiny programs, and came completely installed with all programs from somewhere. It has recently started working very very slowly. (Before the Norton problem, if you're wondering). I casually mentioned once that I'll have to get extra memory space, because 'my millions of photographs and music files are obviously slowing it down completely'.

'Hm'. Said a person overhearing, 'that shouldn't be your problem. Find your startup menu and...'

There followwed some advice about deleting unopened or unused programs. Some mention was also made about having too many taskbar icons.

What the hell was this person talking about? Is this the right sort of advice? What could be causing my computer slowness?

  13. Laptop trouble.

    Date: 06/10/05     Keywords: no keywords

A Sony P4/XP laptop I use was in a car accident. It still works fine after that, except for one problem: it doesn't recognize any USB devices, such as camera or flash memory drive. When I plug any of these devices a wizard appears, which is trying to find a driver (even though all the drivers are in place), and "is unable to install the hardware". Before the accident everything was fine. Reinstallation of Windows didn't help.
    Any ideas?

  14. Help, Advices?

    Date: 06/09/05     Keywords: virus

this really bugs me. I accidentantly "delete" this thing called" DLL.WININET.dll". There was a virus so instead of quaratined it, I accidentaly deleted it. And because of that, lots of programs I can't use, mainly, Internet Explorer. (Lucky for me, I got Firefox.). So, is there anyway to solve this problem.

    Thanks

  18. well.......

    Hi. New here as well.
My computer at home, it died on me last weekend. It froze up, so I tried to restart it. Then it froze partway through the booting-up process. Every time I've tried to boot it up since then, it's frozen partway through. My father seems to think it's a virus. So my questions:

    A) Is this most likely a virus?

    B) Is this repairable?

    C) If so, how much would it cost {on average} to have it fixed?

    D) Is there any chance the memory can be recovered?

  19. Lots a questions..

Date: 06/04/05     Keywords: software, virus, web, spyware

Hello, newbie here! I've got a lot of problems so I'll just put the first batch behind a cut..

-Is it safe to delete Internet Explorer/Outlook Express if I have Firefox and Thunderbird? Is there a way for Firefox to actually connect to the internet without using another program? (I use Walmart Connect)

-What are your favorite programs to have on your computer?

-We got a new computer because the old one was full of roaches (well actually we borrowed it and never gave it back, heh), and it doesn't have a whole lot of the basic programs...

-One day this computer stopped displaying the background unless it was starting up or shutting down. A few months later it went into safe mode and said something about accepting a trojan horse and to scan the comp with anti-virus software to make it alright.
Well, I've scanned it with Spybot, AVG Free (one that keeps coming up is DSO Exploit), and Whos Watching me, the free online thingy from Pandasoftware (I THINK its panda software. It starts with Panda but I'm not sure about the 'software' part), and maybe a few other programs and the computer's gotten a little faster but it won't switch out of safe mode. Oh, and I've also defragged it more often (yay for regular computer maininence! If only I could take care of myself that much, lol), and stopped visiting those wierd websites that like to install spyware but my dad gets on and visits those sites ON PURPOSE, unwittingly defeating my attempts at limiting the amount of stuff we get.

-And, is there a way to keep roaches and other insects out of the computer?

I would ask you how to kill my dad and get away with it so that I wouldn't have to put up with him messing the computer up so bad but then I'd be miserable and we wouldn't have the money to have anything at all.

    Thanks in advance.

  20. IP addresses

    Date: 06/03/05     Keywords: no keywords

Speaking of IP addresses.. if an anonymous poster in a journal has the exact same IP address as someone who has sent an email..

    From the journal:

still havent set up my account
    (Anonymous)
    2005-02-12 03:57 (from 203.213.80.121)

    From the email:

    X-Originating-IP: [203.213.80.121]
    X-Sender: ellisande_1984
    From: "*Elly- mail"
    To: sunsetcloud@fastmail.com.au
    Subject: fwd: RE: photos etc

does that mean that the same person in the email is the one posting as anonymous? or can IPs overlap and become someone elses very easily?
I know they change with every time you log onto the internet... but if the messages are in close times/dates to each other.
