1. Weird Errors

    Date: 01/15/08     Keywords: browser, web

Question/Problem: Photobucket, and other sites, not loading (weird code errors, like code 300, etc). The images show up everywhere, BUT in the actual Photobucket page. I can only make changes in Opera, and some of my paid emails through SendEarnings and InboxDollars won't load, but everything works just fine in Opera (I dislike Opera)

Operating System and VERSION: Windows XP SP2

Web Browser and VERSION: Firefox 2.0.0.11; I also have Opera 9.2

Your level of experience: Intermediate, I think

Duration of problem: Started Friday, I think it was

Any steps you've taken to troubleshoot? Well, I've removed any plugins/extensions for FF that would have a problem (or ones I don't use).

  2. Incoming data/packets/etc

    Date: 01/14/08     Keywords: virus

I know how to check my out going information, hop to hop. tracert. BUT I can't figure out how to check INCOMING information. I'm using portforwarding, trying to be able to host WCIII games on battle.net, but even with the proper set up for my firewalls(XP/McAfee/router)/port forwarding. SO I'm trying to see where the incoming problem is.

Is there a command you can use to show incoming hops or at least where the problem might be?

Oh using Windows XP and a Linksys router and McAfee virus protection.

  3. SPWD Question

    Date: 01/11/08     Keywords: spyware

Ok. Let's say that you suddenly are imed by Spyware Doctor saying that it blocked a malicious entity thru a certain path. Let's also speculate that you didn't catch the path name in order to investigate any corruptions. Is there a way that you can get Spyware Doctor to repeat that path for you?

  4. Free avi editor?

    Date: 01/10/08     Keywords: no keywords

I was wondering if anyone knows of a site similar to Picasa that can edit avi's. I mainly use my camera for picture taking but I do once in a while use it for video's. But I usually forget that it needs to be horizontal so I have a lot of them that are sideways. Also there are a few I'd like to edit things out of. I know I can do basic cutting on the camera but I'm a little scared to use that since I don't want to ruin it. I'd be happy with just rotating them but I was hoping to do more. Anyone know of a free program that can do this?

    Thanks!

  5. Gimme my damn files.

    Date: 01/03/08     Keywords: web

    OKAY. Here's my calamity predicament.

My laptop crashed. WOE. D:< Dell/a technician came in, replaced the memory and motherboard and... still crashed. After that, the guy told me that it was my operating system, Windows Vista [Ultimate]. Even more woe, since I don't have the discs (disks?) that install my old OS, Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, which I love to death now, especially since it doesn't have damn chess. So. I'm wondering if there is a possible way to retrieve some data off of the hard drive containing Windows Vista before Dell sends the replacement OS disks (discs?) and I reinstall.

Oh, and yet another question. When I reinstall XP MCE '05, what partitions of my drive will it reformat- C: or C: and D:? D: has fanvideo backups, websites, and a whole bunch of Photoshopmania. If it'll format both, see my above problem. :P

And, sigh, one more thing that's driving me nuts- IS IT DISCS OR DISKS?!!!

    Kudos and thanks in advance.

    1. I bought a desktop from an old friend who failed to tell me until after I purchased it that he installed windows XP with his old software, meaning I couldn't install service packs. What a friend right? Anyways, how do I go about making this a legit copy, and will it delete everything I have on my computer currently?

    2. Randomly the other day my computer started getting heinous internet explorer popups. I never even use IE! I tried going to add/remove programs to delete IE but it isn't listed. I think it started after the boyfriend installed some torrent downloading thing and put some music on the computer. Could it go away if I simply delete the software and the songs he downloaded, or has it embedded itself deeper in my files? I'm running Spybot and it finds and removes about 10 files every startup, but it can't delete one file called something like Virtuco....somethingsomethingsomething. What other spyware adware virus programs should I try?

And again, I apologize for the absolutely retarted questions =P

  8. Sorry for the Dumb Question

    Date: 01/01/08     Keywords: software

Okay. My dad has purchased a new computer and wishes to transfer his old files and software from the old one onto it. Here's the catch. We don't have the installation cds and the like for some of the programs. Since we're not exactly the technologically savvy, we don't know how to do this.

The question then is this. How do we transfer programs from one computer to the next without the installation cds? Or is that even possible?

    Please help. Please.

  9. Corrupted files?

    Date: 01/01/08     Keywords: no keywords

For a great New Years present, my laptop just started freaking out. If anyone could help, it'd be great.

I have Vista, but I don't think that's the problem? Maybe, but, um, a little notification popped up saying iTunes had a corrupt file (that C:/$Mft was corrupt), and it said, "use the Chkdsk utility". And then it kept popping up, for all sorts of different programs, not just iTunes but Notepad and Quicktime and everything, and then all of my files appeared to be gone. I restarted, and everything's back, but now I'm a little freaked.

Anyone know what's going on, and what I can do? Thanks ahead of time!

  10. argh.

Date: 12/27/07     Keywords: technology, virus, antivirus

Okay, here's the deali-o. My dad just recently purchased a brand spankin' new computer (it's gorgeous) thus meaning he didn't need his old one anymore, so he gave it to me (hooray!) I've always wanted my own computer so I was psyched, he had antivirus stuff on it and everything so I wouldn't have to worry.

The problem? It's pulling a sleeping beauty and won't wake up from its slumber. THAT'S the problem.

I hooked it up properly (I alwas hook up computers for my mom and dad, they are illiterate when it comes to technology) so I know I didn't accidently touch something that shouldn't have been touched.

When I turn on the monitor, however (after turning the computer on) the screen says 'Going to sleep' then proceeds to do so. At first I thought it was just the monitor so I tried a few different ones (my mom's boyfriend is a pack-rat. He has like... ten screens.) and each of them goes to sleep.

Does this mean the computer is on stanby mode? How do I fix it?

Please help. It figures when I actually get a computer it would bugger up.

Ah, I don't know if this matters... but when the computer was hooked up to my father's house, he had the side taken off so it wouldn't overheat. But he put it back on when I brought it to mom's. Is it possible he may of touched something when he put it back on?

Thanks, in advance, for listening to my problem.

  11. An Opera conundrum

Date: 12/26/07     Keywords: html, java, google

As you may or may not know, I switched to Opera. This has mostly been a gratifying experience, but I have had a few problems.

I read a joke on the 'net that Opera doesn't really adhere to the W3C standards very well. This was when I was still using Firefox. I chuckled at it, but now I'm experiencing it.

I realize that this may just be the fact that Opera isn't supported by a lot of sites/services. Google-anything doesn't render properly in Opera, especially Google Docs. My emails in Gmail shift over to the right of the screen when I view it in it's default setting. This is cleared up when I switch over to basic HTML mode.

Then I noticed that the reason that it isn't displaying properly is becaus I had "Fit to width" turned on. This comes in handy, but when I turn it on, it stays on for all sites I visit. Is there a way to select what sites I want and do not want to be fit to width?

Also, how come I can't click a link on some sites (like on Google Reader and Digg) and it won't take me to the page, even though it says it's loading. I have to click the mouse wheel on the link, which you know opens a new link with the page. I assume this is a Javascript problem, but is there anyway to fix it?

    Please help me.

    It won't recognize his modem, so I need some help. Anyone got step-by-step instructions they can share to kinda help me know what I need to do? ^^;

We've got tons of discs and stuff, but I don't see any for the modem specifically. I'm not sure what other information would be relevant, so.. Help, please?

  13. Canon iP3300 printer trouble

    Date: 12/25/07     Keywords: no keywords

    Dear community,

I've some real problems with getting my printer to work. It's a Canon iP3300 printer, my operating system is Windows XP and the printer is connected to the PC via USB cable.

No matter how often I follow the manual and install instructions, I only get as far as connecting the printer to the PC, and then the printer gets installed as unknown unit, though all the drivers were properly installed from the CD before as the manual isntruction said.

Unplugging, uninstalling the unknown unit, restarting and trying some other USB port doesn't help at all.

A friend of mine appearently had the same problem with her printer before but got it handled by using a different USB port. This isn't doing it for me however.

Anyone maybe knows what to do?

  14. Reason number 3485 why parents shouldn't be allowed to have a computer...

Date: 12/24/07     Keywords: security, virus, spyware

Usually I can take care of nasty spyware thingers on my own, but this one has got me stumped.

My mom's machine runs XP, upgraded from ME [go ahead and cringe, i do it too].

She emailed me in a panic a few days ago, saying I broke her computer [bullshit], because this "internet speed monitor" thing keeps popping up.

Unfortunately, my mom doesn't know the wonders of Firefox, so she uses IE. I'm pretty certain IE is to blame, so I reinstalled Firefox [after she had uninstalled it].

She's run the CA security system scan that came with our Roadrunner broadband. It's caught quite a few things, Internet Speed Monitor being one of them.

However, when I used Firefox to try and download AVG-free and Ad-Aware, it wouldn't let me. It downloaded as some insane file extension that I don't even think exists. It's labeled as an "EFW file".

While waiting for the virus scan to finish, I checked my facebook [lolz], and this was in the place where an ad should have been:

    "Removed by HIPS FW"

So now what? The virus scan is still running, and I don't have another way to get decent anti-shit programs onto this machine right now.

Suggestions? Do we just trash it? Reformat is the last thing I want to have to do, as all my mom's college coursework is on the harddrive...but I'm afraid that if I back it up on a CD, I may reinfect the fresh install.

Help? Please and thank you. :)

  15. Help?

    Date: 12/23/07     Keywords: no keywords

My CD/DVD drive does no recognize CDFS (file system) CDs. Or rather ... it did recognize one, after I opened and closed the drive like 5 times, but never again. It recognizes and opens CDs with other file systems, and the computer recognized the CDFS CDs when I used a portable CD driver. Is there anything I could do to make the drive that came with the computer recognize these CDs too?

    Computer: HP Pavilion a1610n
    OS: Windows XP Media Center

P.S. By 'does not recognize' I mean that it doesn't seem to see these CDs at all. There is no error message; it's just as if no CD was inserted in the first place.

Hello dear community who has helped me out a lot by now.

I've great issues with web messengers like MSn, Yahoo-Messenger and the newer versions of AIM.
They all refuse to connect (basically right away as if they were blocked), only an older version of AIM can connect, the newer verions which are available for download everywhere aren't working.

I'm using the Windows firewall on Windows XP and suspected it to be the one at fault first but I checked it and appearently that is not the problem here as I've put the msn and aim exes on the list to be not blocked, still not working.

Before I've been running out of my Norton trial I've been using their firewall and the newer AIm version which refuses to work now worked perfectly fine then (this is why I assumed Windows firewall right away)

I'm also using AVG antivirus (though not the firewall because it's not part of the free version appearently?) and Spyware doctor, if this has any revelance to what's happening here.

    How can this be fixed?

  18. Volume icon help needed for PC

    Date: 12/16/07     Keywords: web

No surprise that I've managed to mess up my computer a little bit by tinkering with it. I must have deleted a program i thought was useless to make more space on my hard drive & now i want it back.

My situation: I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 that runs Windows XP Home. The Inspiron has volume buttons on the front of the deck. These still work fine, but my volume control screens are gone. It used to be that when I pushed one of the volume buttons, a screen would pop up to show me my volume level & whether it was muted or not. I don't know what happened to that little screen, but I miss it. Come back little screen! The volume icon later went missing from the task bar, though i never liked that one much, anyway.

I went through my Control Panel for the Sounds & Devices folder where there seems to be the easy fix check box: "Place volume icon in the task bar" but when I click on that, an error box tells me "Windows cannot display the volume control icon on the taskbar because the Volume Control program has not been installed. To install it, use Add/Remove program in control panel" though I couldn't find that on the program list. Mind you, my volume buttons still work, it just takes a lot of fiddling with them to figure out whether the volume is muted or just all the way down.

Any help anyone could offer would be sincerely appreciated. I've done a bunch of web searches, but haven't really found what I'm looking for. Thanks in advance!

  19. Reinstalling Windows problems

    Date: 12/16/07     Keywords: virus

I'm trying to reinstall Windows XP and I'm having some problems.

I get the following error message:

"A problems has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps:

Check for viruses on your computer. Remove any newly installed hard drives or hard drive controllers. Check your hard drive to make sure it is properly configured and terminated. Run CHKDSK /F to check for hard drive corruption, and then restart your computer.

    Technical information:
    ***STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF79ED528, 0x00000034, 0x00000000, 0x00000000)"

    - How can I check for viruses or remove anything or check the configuration without accessing Windows?
    - What is CHKDSK /F and how do I run it?

For now I'll try reinstalling once more, but I'm predicting the same result. Thanks in advance for any help, and I'm an idiot when it comes to computers so assume I know nothing.

  20. Livejournal header

    Date: 12/12/07     Keywords: html, web

I've put a header on my Livejournal. Only problem is that everytime you click it, it goes to Photobucket's website. I hate this and want to be able to click the banner without getting transfered all the time. (Not that there is any reason to click it, but sometimes by accident it happens, very annoying).
Have tried doing the code differently but failed. How do you paste the code in the 'if you have an external counter you can enter the html here' box without having the Photobucket link? Everytime I've tried to alter the code the picture either hasn't shown up or just had a text link with no picture. Please help me. Thanks!
