Serial to TCP/IP in Windows
Date: 06/09/06
Keywords: no keywords
I'm looking for a simple serial to ethernet bridge program that will run under Windows and won't cost me my first born. Specifically, I want to send one of the physical ports on the Windows machine out to ethernet so I can grab data from elsewhere.
Does anyone know of anything around? I tried writing one in C to use under Cygwin but that didn't work quite so well (I'm sure I missed something simple that would have made it work).

Blocking internet services
Date: 06/07/06
Keywords: linux
I need some help. In short, I need to know how to stop selected internet services (HTTP, AIM, BT), but still allow traffic to and from it's connected server.
About a year ago I set up a Linux box at my moms office. They needed basically a print server. They had issues on Windows with people using the net for things they shouldn't be doing at work. So I basically said "I'll show them..." and it worked. Now, they need to use the machine to use a program to manage their work orders. I'm going to install Windows 98 or XP depending on the responses written.
Ideally I'm looking for a packet shaping program that I can set up as an administrator to block the services mentioned above so while they're logged in, they can't use them. I know this can be done with some hardware and the DD-WRT firmware and the like, but I'm looking for a cheap solution. Its a small housing authority. Thanks

I have a Lemel notebook computer, and recently it's been going haywire. There's a built-in wireless card, but for a few days I haven't been able to connect to my home's wireless internet connection. It's driving me nuts, because my sister, who uses a Dell laptop, can connect perfectly fine. I can use an LAN connection, but the wireless just won't connect. I checked the settings, and it has Windows automatically configure the Internet, and it's supposed to automatically connect to one or two networks. The problem is that it can't seem to find those networks.
I did try the repair function, and the repair worked until it tried to connect; then it said that it couldn't complete the repairing thing because it couldn't connect.
Is there any advice on what this could be? Is it a problem with the wireless card?

Computer shutting down problem.
Date: 06/03/06
Keywords: no keywords
Alright, Thursday night here was a thunderstorm. To keep things short, we decided to shut down the computers after we hear this huge crack/splitting of electricity. We lost power for two seconds and it came back on. But we lost cable, and the internet.
Yesterday I came to find that even though the cable came back, the internet did not. Our internet is not tied with our cable, of course, but I took the time to try and figure out what went wrong. I hooked my father's computer directly to the modem and not through our router and found the internet never was lost. Out of our 5 computers, none could get on the internet! So what I found out is that the same huge crack/split of lightning that killed our cable also fried our router. This I know because we couldn't even access the router page over at 192.168.1.1.
Father and I then went out to CompUSA and bought a new router. I hooked that up yesterday and the internet was working fine to all the computers. =] But that is only half the problem.
One of the computers in the office is having a problem. I think it got fried. The computer light is always on, and it won't. Turn. Off. Unless I unhook the power cord from the back. I can sit there and press and hold the power button but it will not turn off. The monitor also stays on standby because when I move the mouse to wake up the computer, it won't wake up. Any ideas what can be wrong? My dad doesn't want to buy another new computer, he did that two weeks ago because he just bought himself a brand new one. If there is anything that I can look at/replace in the computer, it would be great. =]
EDIT:
I should probably add that NumLock on the keyboard will turn on and off, and the CD drive of the computer will not open.

macbook ram
Date: 06/01/06
Keywords: asp
So I just got this new MacBook, and 512mb ram is killing me. I wanted to upgrade to 2gb, so I went on Newegg to look for deals on the particular RAM that Apple uses on the MacBook (pc2-5300 ddr2 sodimms) and I found this crazy cheap 1gb stick from OCZ (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820227099).
But...what is PC2-5400? I mean, I don't really pay much attention to these things, all the less cause I'm not in any need to build a new computer right now, but I didn't even know that you can get DDR2 667 stuff in both PC2-5300 and 5400, is there something I'm totally missing?
I'll probably be fine getting that stick of RAM, right? I don't really care too much about returning them if they don't work. I just want to buy it right now...that RAM is roughly half of what Kingston or Crucial's charging ($140-190 oh god) and it's the same price as the generic stuff and OCZ tends to be a hell of a lot more reliable for me over the cheap noname brands :P
Also, if anyone could point me in the direction of cheap 7200rpm SATA laptop drives, that would rock. The best I can find is a 100gb 7200rpm drive for $150-180. :(

ATI vs NVIDIA
Date: 06/01/06
Keywords: no keywords
I work at Best Buy and recently we hooked up an HP m7470 computer to demo Windows Media Center on an HDTV. The system has an Athlon 4200+ dual core processor, 2GB of RAM (expandable to 4GB), 300GB HD, with a TV tuner and all that other stuff for $1000. The standard card is a Radeon 200 or some crap which won't fly with me. My question is... which card should I get? I'm torn between ATI's Radeon X1900 XTX (maybe the Crossfire) or Nvidia's best.
Will that system with an ATI card be an amazing gaming machine? I'm a huge fan of Half-Life 2 and other FPS's as well as RTS games like AOE3 or C&C and I want insane quality. Give me your honnest opinion. Price IS NOT an issue seeing as I can get 40-50% off with Best Buy's employee program but only with ATI. So, will it suit my needs?
Thanks, D

Decent PC spec suggestions?
Date: 06/01/06
Keywords: linux
I am planning on building a pc in the near future and i had a few bar bones specs that i would want, and i just wanted to know you anybody had anything to add to them:
Intel Pentuim 4 w/HT 3GHz
nVidia GeForce 256MB Video Card
1GB RAM
160GB HD
Windows XP Media Center w/ dual-boot SuSE Linux
Most part will be coming from my pal that works at Intel, becasue whenever the drop a palette, they give everything on it away for free. This means that i should be spending about $100-$200 on this computer. I mainly want something that will churn through The Sims 2 and be able to play DVDs, and Churn through internet tasks like buttuh.

ThinkPad recovery partition

Sup. Has anyone here had any luck accessing and formatting the IBM ThinkPad hidden recovery partition - WITHOUT running DFT? I put this drive in an iBook, and I'd like to get to that hidden 4GB. If you've ever tried upgrading anything in an iBook, you know that pulling the drive and sticking it in a Windows machine is the last thing I want to do. So....any options? Is there some DFT-type bootable CD that is PowerPC-compatible?

Spyware issue.
Date: 05/30/06
Keywords: virus, spyware
I currently have extremely large amounts of spyware on my laptop at the minute.
Nearly every thirty seconds, this pops up.
When I click it, it directs me to SpyFalcon.
Which is just a pain in the ass, and has slowed my computer down.
My laptop has ultimately no protection from viruses, spyware, adware, etc.
And it's been fine for well over a year--until now.
So I downloaded Ad-Aware SE--because I was told it was free, and worked pretty well.
However, it did nothing.
ARE there any free reliable programs that can be downloaded to remove this, as well as other possible threats I'll have in the future. Also, if I end up purchasing a program, what is the best choice?
I appreciate any help given.

Are there mp3 players out there that are just as good or better than the iPod? And possibly even cheaper?

Saving problem.

(x-posted several places)
Okay, guys, this one has me stumped completely. Lately-- starting Wednesday, I guess. That's when I noticed it-- I've had trouble saving media files: videos, mp3, and zip files (pics are fine, though). The file will go through the whole download process, with the little progress window, but then when I go to locate the file, it's like none of it ever happened. Nothing comes up. Or, when I save it on something like my Desktop or in My Documents, the little icon will show up at 99%, then disappear completely. WTF?
I thought they might be going to a hidden folder, but all of my searches have turned up with nothing. So it's like I said, it's as if I never saved it. I've also had trouble receiving files on MSN. I had to ask a friend to send me the same damn picture three times before it went through.
any ideas??? this is driving me abolutely insane. I'm on Win XP, btw. I've already tried a system restore, but that did nothing.
Edit: Oh yeah, and I can't even download programs. I tried to d/l Adobe Audition, and everything went through, until I clicked "Run" when it came to the whole "Are you sure you want to download this file?" thing... then nothing happened. It just would not enter setup. Ugh.

Ultraportable P1120 XP install problems
Date: 05/26/06

Ok so I'm the questionably proud owner of a Fujitsu lifebook P1120, which is like the "bees knees" of portable, and the current xp install is crap, and luckily fujitsu has a restore partition that used Drive-image special edition, right? Well I go to restore and it gets about half-done and suddenly "cannot find image" and now I have no OS.
My question is, how can I install XP on this laptop without a CD rom drive? Please help!

What the???
Date: 05/23/06
Keywords: virus
Mental note, when net only works on gateway machine, and nowhere else, check AOL McAfee virsucan update. Update viruscan, computers are connected again...?
Any idea why failure to update McAfee thru AOL(aohell) causes only the machine connected directly to the cable modem to work? A keyword search for AOL McAfee and ICS wasn't enlightening.
Running WinME (gateway machine), w/ICS and Zonealarm (free). Just curious if anyone has an explanation for this little quirk... other than AOL, McAfee, WinME and Zonealarm suck? =)

I have been having trouble with a few websites in Firefox lately. They don't look like they load fully. I tried loading them in IE and everything is perfect.
I ran spybot and found the following thing pop up:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Security Center\AntiVirusOverride!=dword=0 Kind=Registry.
Is this a virus? Did something get changed and I didn't know it?
If there is anything you can tell me, I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks.

recording software
Date: 05/22/06
Keywords: software, web
So as part of a community service project, I am trying to record books on "tape" for an elementary school teacher using the computer. I have a microphone, and have successfully recorded using the sound recorder software that comes with windows. But this software will only record for 60 seconds at a time. I tried looking around on the web for some other free recorders, but they seem to be limited to 60 second tracks also. I'm not looking for anything fancy (I don't need to add in other instruments, do mixing, etc, etc) but I would like something that would record longer tracks. Does anyone know of any free software out there that I could use for this purpose?

VB 6.0 Data Environments/Reports
Date: 05/18/06
Keywords: database
I'm using VB 6 with an Access Database (I know... I know...) and I'm trying to get it to generate a report based on user selected criteria.
Basically my database is full of contacts that can be involved in my company's programs. The user should be able to select a program from a dropdown and then print a report of all the contacts participating in that program.
I've been able to make it print every contact in every program, but not for a specific program only
Thoughts?

Logitech Mouse button Assignments
Date: 05/17/06
Keywords: no keywords
I have a Logitech LX7 Cordless mouse. It has technically 8 buttons on it, but only 3 of them are usable in games (left, right, scroll button push.) I was wondering if there was any way to get games to recognize the other buttons. I know there's a program called Logigamer, but that seems to be for true gaming mouses. Mine isn't a gaming mouse, but I would still like to have access to the other buttons in my games. Any advice? Thanks.
