Opera Browser is the best in terms of search engine integration. 2. One-Way Links?

Date: 11/11/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: web, hosting, yahoo, google

Thanks to everyone who responded to my previous post...you guys are definately a great source of information!

I'm wondering what everyone thinks about the power of one-way links to your webpage. For example, getting links into smaller engines and directories like DMOZ, JoeAnt, Scrub the Web etc. I know a lot of people don't necessarily use them to search anymore but I have heard that having a lot of those sites linking to your site can help improve your rankings in the organic portion of Google and Yahoo! Can anyone let me know how accurate this is?

Also, this is slightly off-topic, but I'm looking for suggestions for FREE photo hosting sites. I use Photobucket but I need to compile a list of user-friendly ones to give to people who are using this website and want to host photos for things like the message board. Can anyone give me some suggestions?

    Thanks!

  9. Sitemaps?

Date: 12/01/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: html, xml, web, seo, yahoo, google

Do people still use these on their actual websites? I'm helping a woman launch her website and she would like to include a sitemap. I know you can generate XML and HTML ones specifically for Google and Yahoo! and things like that, but what about plain, easy-to-read ones to actually put on your website for people browsing your website to look at? Can that still be helpful in terms of SEO?

    Thanks!

Edit: Two other questions...is it better to create your own sitemap or are programs that create them for you pretty good? I found one that I thought looked good: http://www.sitemappro.com/

Also, the site in question is password protected, only members can view certain sites...should every page still be on the sitemap even though non-members won't be able to access it?

    http://answers.google.com/answers/threadview?id=426607

This sounds almost exactly like my problem:

    The symptoms are:

    - No web pages get displayed for any of the websites
    - If we reboot the pc/xp then internet web page access
works fine for the first few minutes. After that
it will not work. Tried both IEand Mozilla. But every
thing in the setting seems to be fine. Checked the
Tools Options, etc/host etc.All the connection settings
are proper with DHCP enabled, Automatic IP address, DNS
    address etc.

    though:

    - ping works fine
    - nslookup also works fine.
it shows the correct ip address to hostname mapping

I tried MS Antispyware beta1 and AVG Free both found some viruses
and of course rebooted the machine. But no use. I still ended up
    with the same problem.

Finally I started removing winsocks entries in the registry. After that
I could even use ipconfig and nslookup.

I tried system restore from the control panel. Wow. It worked.
I restored the system to the day where I had no problem to access internet.
After restore, the pc boots on its own and then finally, the problem is gone.
Since I restored the system to a backdate, all the visuses are also
got restored. Again used Antispyware beta1 to scan the pc to remove
    all the
affected Drives. Also, used AVG Free to remove remaining viruses.

    The solution:
    Use system restore.

There,in case anyone can help me with this(pretty, pretty please!?)In my case System restore doesn't work,Windows re-installation(few times),didn't work either. Also, after I reboot,I still can't open pages in any browser,it just allows me to connect. Without rebooting my pc I can't connect at all. And sometimes even that doesn't help. My dial up works fine,as you can see.

I'm not a computer expert,I know only basics,so please bear with me. Tnx.

    x-posted everywhere,because I'm desperate like that.

  11. Build a good C2D system for a good price

Date: 12/02/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: html, asp, jsp, google

I got suckered into building a C2D system by my employer's discount program. I did my research- maybe someone else could also put it to good use.

This is for a Core 2 Duo E6300-based gaming system that is designed to be moderately overclocked, with good options for future upgrades.

First, the two reasons that I even needed the system:

Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion (there was a deal for $20 on amazon a few days back.)

    http://3btech.net/po803tubland2.html
Need front/rear fans plus one on the side to deal with overclocking. The power supply is adequate unless you are planning for dual-graphics cards with SLI/Crossfire setup, in which case 500w would be a safer bet. I just like the case because it looks cool with the lights. I mean- Since I'm spending this much money already, why skimp on the packaging?

As for DVD-ROM burner, I'll let you hunt for it yourself because there are too many choices for cheapo ones, depending on the speed.

Final Damage: around $700 without a monitor
(high-end sound card and audio hardware extra if you don't already have them)

This is not bad at all considering what you're getting. While you are not going to win benchmark competitions with this (you'll need Core 2 Duo X6800 w/ unlocked multi along with a monster gfx set to do that) you will get something that plays games very fast and smoothly with a lot of the eye candy turned on at high resolutions.

I was just wondering if someone could tell me if this was at all accurate? I've been trying to help someone with their website, and I've been submitting them to various online directories (human-edited ones mostly like DMOZ) so that they will have more links going to their site. I was under the impression that will help with their Google rankings. They've recently retained the services of a professional internet marketing company and the company is telling them to stop submitting their site for links because if they get too many in a short period of time, Google frowns upon that and will possibly knock their page rank down. Can anyone tell me if there is any truth to that?

i know i'll have to use some javascript for the IE6 transparency, but i really want to keep this as clean as possible. i've searched google and a list apart - i know about image sprites, the suckerfish menu, and the transparency javascript, but how do i combine the drop down with the image transparency? i just can't get my mind around this one. any help would be so greatly appreciated.

  16. Guilty by association to spam

Date: 12/08/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, html, database, web, spam, google

I've got an interesting problem that's stumped both the senior programmer and me.

    Situation:
A user is looking for a company to provide a service, they find our site at or near the #1 position on a google search result, they find a company where they need the service done, and they send a request for a quote via a php form. The form processes this request, logs it into the DB, and at a set time, that record is dropped into a MTA. This is the problem.

    `From: $UserProvidedEmailAddress`

    Problem:
In an ideal world, this would be fine, but thanks to spam... this sets of just about every single spam filter I know of and then a day/week later we are suddenly blacklisted by everyone including our own email service provider. In the last two months we've had to call up the spam database companies and get taken off the list (after a day or week of them doing necessary investigation to find we are in fact not spamming). The next logical step would be to replace the from field with a real email account like `info@ourserver.com` and then put the user provided email address in the `reply-to:` field of the email header instead. But my senior argues that we will still set off the spam filters and I agree and I can't see how to fix this.

    So to review:
There are 3 parties involved in these script generated emails.
Customers who provide us their email addresses via the form. We protect the email addresses and flush them after 60 days (legal reasons)
Advertising clients who pay us to get these emails from our top listed site.
Ourselves, all transactions are bcc to us so we can track initial user to advertiser interactions and make sure we are providing the product our clients are paying us for( customers and web presence)

    Why:
My employers want to keep it as simple as possible for our clients to respond to potential customers, hence the customer email address in the from field. But that doesn't work because of spam.

    Thoughts:
Also, we can't put advertising client email addresses on the site or make them accessible to humans because spam-spiders will get them and proceed to spam the client's.
My senior has written a working prototype for an in-site messaging system using rails, but the fear is that some of our clients are to lazy/stupid to use it... I agree, some of these people are pretty dumb.
Another thought would be to put some sort of mailto: url in the emails, but not everyone uses html enabled email clients.

  18. Anchor tags and iFrames

Date: 12/11/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, html, java, google

    Hey guys,

My question is about iFrames. But let me backtrack and tell you about the kind of thing I'm trying to implement.

I'm actually using an iFrame to embed a blog to an ordinary HTML page. When the user clicks on "read comments," the php code fetches the site_url + #anchor. Ok? Now, this was fine in theory until I tried it out, and turns out that using URL + anchor in an iframe scrolled the PARENT window down, as well as the iFrame.

So, I googled around and found this script, which uses offSetTop to determine how many pixels the element is off the top, and then sets the scroller to that location thanks to scrollTop. This looks like just what I need actually, and with some modifications, it might work, but when it comes down to it, this script displays navigation buttons on the parent page (mine shouldn't do that) and also the buttons are generated by the iframe.

    < script type="text/javascript" >
    < !--

    function goAnchor(id){
    anchorPos = window.frames['anchor_iframe'].document.getElementById(id).offsetTop;
    window.frames['anchor_iframe'].document.body.scrollTop = anchorPos;

    }

    // -- >

As a way of thinking myself out of this box, I figured that I could perhaps...make PHP embed the scrollTop value in the URL...(which is probably not feasible since scrollTop is DOM property, not HTML) and my second idea is using PHP to put out a few lines of JavaScript that scrolls the window after it has been loaded, and while I sense this might work, I wonder if there is a standard way of getting around the problem, which is the unwanted scrolling of the parent window to the anchor tag of the embedded iFrame.

    Makes sense?

Sorry I can't provide a link to this implementation, since I'm working on it locally and can't take it live right now.

Oh...plus..do you know...if there is any way of fetching variable values from inside an iframe for use by the parent tag? Not DOM properties, mind you, but like some JS variable.

  19. Looking for Online Collaboration Tools

Date: 12/14/06 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: database, web, google

I run a photo studio. All artists in residence in the studio are working on the same project this year. We have almost a hundred models in our book, and need to find a way to share a calendar so that we can all put down when we're available, not available, have shoots scheduled, and the like. We also need to have an online database for all of our models where we can all see the models' information, write notes, share images, and the like.

In short, we need an online collaboration system.

We've looked at Google Web Apps, and that has nice shared email and a decent calendar, but nothing even close to a shared online database for our models.

Anyone have any suggestions? Free or pay, either is fine. I'm perfectly cool paying for something that works.

I don't know what this feature is called so I don't know what to type in Google to figure out how to disable it. Or if you can tell me how to disable it, that would be awesome too.
