1. Web Calendar Software...does this exist?

Date: 01/02/07 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: php, software, web, microsoft

Hi, I'm looking for some commercial software, more specifically, a calendar that can be hosted on a webserver, accessed and edited by multiple users, give the admin different control levels, and have a ton of room for customization. I'm doing web development for a non profit organization.

Here is the problem, everything that I've provided and shown my boss is either 1. not *pretty* or professional looking enough or 2. not what he needs (canned software that can't be customized enough to fit his organization's needs.

I've tried to tell him that other than having a small company develop the program entirely from scratch, there is not really anything else we can really do.

The closest thing I've come to his approval is the calendar available at http://www.mhsoftware.com, but he doesn't like the day view mode of the calendar.

I've told him instead of shelling out all kinds of cash for software to be developed specifically for him we instead could use certain elements of the calendar and the rest could be php scripts containing forms, tables, etc. Well he still has me looking so what I want to know is, has anyone seen a commercially available calendar application that can be hosted on the web and have a ton of room for customization?
Cost doesn't seem to be an issue either.

The example he gave me of what he wishes it to be like is his calender on...AOL. :(

The biggest problem is this is an exact copy of the email I get from this organizations office when I presented them with a letter similar to this.

"I THINK WE SHOULD GO WITH THE MICROSOFT - I FEEL SURE IT WOULD MEET OUR NEEDS FOR THE TIME BEING."

That was the email I got...wow. I'll call MS right up and have them get to work on the application...It's becoming a real problem trying to get them to understand anything.

Thanks for any help x-posted to a few other places.

  5. drag and drop outlook contacts

Date: 01/08/07 (C Sharp)    Keywords: microsoft

I am trying to drag and drop an outlook contact into a form. No matter what I do it sees it as text. I am trying to make it work so the contact is dropped and the various objects within the contact (FullName, BusinessAddress, etc.) can then be assigned to a string and populate the form. I can grab the whole thing as one string and plonk that in a field but that really isn't much use. Using an array gets the same useless effect.

I know there are usually only a few types GetData knows how to work with (eg. text, gif, etc.) do I need to define a custom format using Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook.ContactItemClass ? Is there someway I can make it see what it is?

  9. Seeking open source (or at least, freely available) project management software

Date: 01/15/07 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: mysql, software, database, sql, web, linux, microsoft

I'm trying to find something that will do approximately what Microsoft Project does, without actually being Microsoft Project ... Things I'd be looking for (ordered approximately from most important, to least important...):

  10. Can track project schedules and resource allocation

  11. Open Source (or at least, freely available)

  12. Self-contained standalone application (e.g., not web based, does not require any additional software such as MySQL or some other database back-end to be installed in order to function)

  13. Runs on both Windows and Linux

  14. Ability to work with (at least read) MS Project ".mpp" files nice, not strictly necessary

  15. I found "Windows Planner" (a Windows port of GNOME Planner) on Sourceforge. Unfortunately, while it does install on my WinXP SP2 system, it does not run - attempting to start it results in a DLL error. There are some other things on Sourceforge that look very nice, but they all seem to either be web-based, or require a database back-end, and that won't work for what I'm doing at the moment.

    Any recommendations?

  16. No internet

Date: 01/15/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: software, microsoft

The other day I was on my computer and a blue screen flashed up, the PC rebooted itself too quickly for me to see what the blue screen said. Then once it had rebooted, as soon as I tried to log on to my Windows XP account, the blue screen came back up and said that there was a serious driver error (paraphrasing here) and that it could be something to do with a software or hardware fault. Windows refused to start because of this. It said to check any new software or hardware installed ( I haven’t installed anything new for ages, besides drivers for my video card).
So it kept doing the rebooting thing, until I started Windows in Safe Mode with Networking (for the internet) and luckily all my files etc were still there and usable. I could connect to the internet etc. About a week beforehand, I had downloaded drivers from Nvidia for the video card, as my Sims 2 game kept crashing and the report back from Microsoft said it was a problem with the video card drivers. So I uninstalled those completely and what do you know – no more blue screen when I logged into XP normally. I thought the problem was solved, but unfortunately now my internet isn’t working (I am posting this from work). I have broadband, and there is usually a little icon down in the corner of my taskbar with two little computers, showing my LAN connection to my ISP (I guess) and it is just not there anymore. If I try to get my ISP to connect, it just says that the local area network connection wasn't found. I thought it might be a problem with my modem, but I don’t think it is because before, when I was still on dial up, the icon was still there, only it just showed a red cross over it to say that it wasn’t connected. The lights and everything on the modem are working.

I reinstalled those Nvidia drivers, thinking that might solve the problem, but unfortunately not. The blue screen hasn’t come back though.

I really know nothing about video cards, (my last computer had crappy onboard graphics) so I’m taking a guess here that the card controls the networking for the computer? If so, would it be a hardware issue where a new video card would fix it? I have been wanting a new one anyway, but I don’t want to get one yet if that’s not the problem.

I tried doing a repair installation of XP but no dice. I’m hesitant to do a complete reformat because I have about 160 gigs of stuff I’d have to backup onto discs first, and that is a royal pain in the butt – especially if I did the reformat and then discover that a new video card would have fixed it all along!

I hope some of this has made sense to someone.

These are my specs from where I had the PC built:

AMD Athlon 64 4600+ Dual Core
    • Nvidia Geforce 6600GT 128MB PCI Express Video Card
    • 1024 MB DDR2 RAM
    • Seagate 200GB Serial ATA Hard Drive

If someone could offer some advice, I'd be extremely grateful!

    Cross posted.

  18. merging

Date: 01/17/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: microsoft

I have two similar Microsoft Word documents that I never thought about tracking changes on. I want to merge them now and for Microsoft to tell me the differences between them. Is there a way to do this?

Prolly not but I thought I'd ask just in case

(Btw, these two docs are just my "address books" with a column for name, address, etc. It is now a 9 page document, each line a different person so I'd rather not go line by line to see the differences I made on the home one and the work one if I could)

    Many Thanks as Always!!

as posted to '[info]'computerhelp: my parents computer has started getting this dialog box constantly: whether you hit yes or no, nothing happends,, except it reappearing after a random ammount of time. i have run scans with avg, adaware, and spybot, and nothing they find appears related or affects it. i had the task manager tell me what process created the box, and it points me to explorer.exe. and also if i end task the box, i get this: makes no sence for it to be from microsoft since they have that entire automatic updating system.. and there was no priority updates anyway other than ie7. anyone know what this might be and how to get rid of it? (and something happened to lj's html formatting, sorry if this is hard to read)
