1. Language Choice

    I need some advice in regard to which language to use for developing a dynamic website. My wife and I are thinking about creating a LMAO website, which will allow people to organize various LMAO projects. The website will allow users to register, log in, create projects, join projects, upload pictures, and so on. It's not terribly large project, but still pretty complicated for people who haven't done any web development and little programming in general.

    The first problem is deciding upon a language to use. The site will, at least in the beginning, run on our server at home, which is FreeBSD running Apache2 (or anything else we want, to be honest. I'm not giving up FreeBSD, though!). It looks like all major languages in the field, including PERL, Ruby (and Ruby on Rails), Python, and PHP work well with Apache, so that shouldn't be a problem. For the database back-end, we'll be using PostgreSQL or MySQL (if we have to), both of which are widely supported as well.

    My wife doesn't have much experience in programming, so for her it will be new experience one way or the other. I have some, but still little. The only language I'm familiar with and can actually write something useful in is Common Lisp. There exists mod_lisp and a couple of web development frameworks, TBNL and UnCommon Web, but the process seems hacky -- from what I can tell -- unless one uses a commercial CL implementations that cost a lot.

    I've looked briefly at Python and Ruby, as well as asked for opinions from various groups of people (programmers who prefer Lisp, Ruby, or Python), but it's all still looks like mambo-jumbo to me. The only thing they agree on is that one should refrain from using PHP for anything non-trivial, so I'm inclined to believe that. As far as PERL is concerned, I've always had a distaste for it, so am not all that keen on using it.

    Could anyone recommend one of these language, or perhaps another one, that would be suitable for our needs? I've pretty much made up my mind in regards to PHP and PERL, so I'm not looking for a debate about why they're good. I also wish to stay away from Windows-based and Java-based solutions.

  2. SQL Server 2005 Developer VS Express Editions

    Date: 12/19/05 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: programming, sql

    I just got a new computer and I'm setting it up so I can do my programming work at home. I still need to install a SQL server, and even though my company doesn't use it I'm looking at 2005 because quite frankly I don't feel like installing 2000 AND 2005 and having multiple instances running. I'm wondering between downloading either SQL Server 2005 developer edition or the Express Edition. Cost isnt' an issue since I have a MSDN license at work, I don't want to have to DL 2 CDs worth of data if I don't have to. Does anyone know more about the features of these 2 versions and whether or not I should really prepare for the future with a DEV edition or if I should just go with the lightweight Express edition. One thign is though that I'd like easy integration into the VS IDE, and I read that SQL Express integrates into VS Express, but my Version is the Professional Edition, so I don't know if they will integrate also. Its not a necessity but it would be a nice thing to have since everyone seems to be going that direction while I'm still manually writing SQL script. Any feedback would be appreciated. BTW computer power isnt' an issue either. I have an AMD 4400+ X2 with 1 gig of ram.

  3. Windows XP Programming and Gaming Users

    Date: 11/29/05 (Asp Dot Net)    Keywords: programming, sql, web

    Ok this is a weird question that may not be appropriate here but here's my situation: I'll be getting a new computer for Xmas that will be a powerful machine that will be used for 2 primary functions: Programming and Gaming. Thing is that basically I do alot of web programming so I'm going to have VS 2003 and 2005, SQL Server (possibly 2000 AND 2005), and IIS. As you know gaming requires alot of system resources and memory and I don't want to have to go to task manager everytime I boot up to play a game to close off all the programming and server programs. So what I'm wondering is whether or not I should:

    A: Set up 2 user accounts on my computer (this is an XP Pro machine) with one for programming and one for gaming that has a modified startup script to disable everything (which i have no experience in writing BTW). I also don't know if this would even free up all the memory that I'd want.

    B: Install 2 instances of XP Pro and use a dual boot configuration with one config with all the server and programming tools and one without. HD space isnt' really an issue since I will have a 250 gig hard drive (and likely will be adding more at a later date.) However I'm not very experienced with this sort of setup. I do plan on installing Windows XP 64-bit as well, so I'd have to do the 2 32-bit installations first and then do the 64-bit one. I'm not very keen on dealing with multiple partitions for all my programs, especially if they can't talk to one another (although I bet there's tools that allow you to view on the parttions, like I said I don't have much experience with this.) I know the 64 will require its own partition.

    Sorry if this is really "out there" or inappropriate for this community. If someone knows a more appropriate one please let me know. I just figured since there appears to be a decent number of intelligent computer users here that perhaps there'd be someone here who could help me as well. Thanks alot.

  5. Arrrr. I suck.

    Date: 01/06/06 (Algorithms)    Keywords: programming, java

    So... after having taken *counts* 5 programming classes, I still suck at programming. 3 of the said clases were lower level assembly languages, the other two the higher level C/C++ and a Data Structures course in Java.
    That's kind of sad. I'm also starting research with a data base lab this spring and I'm freaking out here, because I seriously doubt I know much to begin with. Or even the stuff I am supposed to know.

    The problem now is I need to fix this. I am not sure how. I have been doing well in my classes... but it's been mostly through beating the material to my head, and spending waaaay more time on the projects than I felt like it should take . It doesn't feel like the stuff comes to me as easily as it should.
    Also! I *know* my algorithm writing skills suck. I guess I need more practice. And now I'm rambling.

    *Anything* you guys would recommend? I feel like I need to review the most elementary stuff and practice more. Any resources/exercises?

    Danke.

  7. Parallel method to help increase the solution quality

    Date: 08/22/05 (Algorithms)    Keywords: programming

    Hi, my goal improve solution quality (or have the quality found/converged in less iterations) by running the sequential (heuristic agent like) algorithm in parallel in an island/colony mode. Each agent/ant colony searches for solution independently and after a period of time they exchange data with each other. This model is very much like genetic algorithm/programming.

    Currently what I have is at S stages , each colony sends the best solution it founds to a central place, this center place then sends back the best solution to everyone and each colony will add a large amount of pheromones to this new solution upon receiving, so basically each new colony will a new pheromone config that will lean toward the new solution. I have implemented many other connection models such as ring (colony A sends to colony B, B->C, C->A etc), and use less greedy method by not sending the best but higher quality solution has a higher probablity of being used etc .

    I do achieve better in average solution qualities , for example 3 colonies are better than 2 and 2 colonies better than 1 (sequential). But with 4 , 5 colonies I see the results are worst than 1 colony. Furthermore, the difference is not by much. I hope to get a large differences in average solution quality to show that parallel colony like this is beneficial as it increases the search space and its cooperative sharing manner.

    Any idea or suggestion ? Thanks in advance

  11. Can Anyone Help Please?

    Date: 03/03/06 (Web Development)    Keywords: programming, web

    Hello all, I am totally new to this, but have recently bought my own webspace and am wanting to start an invision power board forum. The problem is, I am clueless and do not know how to do a thing! I had initially had some help offered, but am not sure that help is still available now as I decided to get the license for the newest version rather than mess around with an older, free version. I would be wanting a shoutbox integrated into the forum and any useful mods available for download. I also only have a half done frontpage,so it is a bit of a nightmare and a major disappointment to me. I know some basics for the admin, just no programming or skinning stuff.

    Is there anyone who would be willing to help me out with this project, which is very important to me? I would be forever grateful. If not, no worries. Thanks.

    I was wondering if any of the seasoned PHP people can help me get my "baptism under fire" I have been programming "mostly python and C and the occasional dabble with Perl". I hope this project that requires me to use PHP will diversify my skill set but time is not my friend.

    I have a simple perl script that I have used before to payments to an E-Commerce payment center. Ordinarily I would use it but circumstances I cannot get into do no allow for that. The API to write to this is below:

  13. Type-matching columns and security issues.

    Setup: Visual C# 2005 Standard Edition, SQL Server 2000 Enterprise Edition (SP, erm, I think we're up to 6?)

    1. As usual everything I'm rading on the internet seems to have something to do with web programming, and I'm not programming for the web.

    I'm trying to set a relation in a dataset, and I'm getting the following error: "Parent Columns and Child Columns don't have type-matching columns." Now, putting aside the embarrassingly painful grammar of that statement, it's quite simply not true; the two columns I'm trying to relate are both int. One was originally no-NULLs-allowed and the other nullable, but changing them to be the same in that cases didn't fix the problem. Anyone know of any other reasons why this error might crop up that actually have nothing to do with te column types involved?

    * * *

    2. This is an incredibly noobish question, sorry; I'm not used to writing stuff that other people will actually use.

    My boss is after a progress report on my current project, so I built a copy of it and put the copy out on one of our network drives to which he also has access. The computer on which he's attempting to run the program has .NET 2.0, so no problem there. When he attempts to run the program, he gets an odd error that I don't remember off the top of my head, but it translates to "SQL Server is not letting you in." Our server is set to require Windows authentication, and he is logged in.

    Any ideas? Thanks.

  14. Gettind recordsets via ADO Command Object

    Date: 03/14/06 (SQL Server)    Keywords: programming, sql, security

    Hi everyone.

    ...about programming MS ADO with MS SQL Server.
    Is it possible to get a (ADODB) Recordset having NOT Forward-only cursor type from 'Execute' method of ADO Command object?

    To be clear, in terms of VBA Code:

    Dim adocmd as ADODB.Command
    Dim rst as ADODB.Recordset
    Set adocmd = New ADODB.Command
    ' ....... Connecting 'adocmd' via MS SQLOLEDB Provider
    Set rst = adocmd.Execute

    The problem is that I could not get non-ForwardOnly recordset in the last statement in all cases, and I wish to use the result (rst) as the data source (Recordset property) for a MS Access form. Such forms don't allow to set forward-only recordsets as form data sources, of course.

    The parameters of 'Execute' method of ADODB.Command object do not include cursor type setting of the recordset returned.

    Thanks in advance for any help.

    UPDATED. A solution is found.

    Setting the client-side cursor to the active connection may fix the problem. As the documentation says, "Cursors returned by the Execute method inherit this setting", so after such setting the Recordset object returned by Execute method of the Command object has Client-side static cursor - this is appropriate for setting it as a Data Source Recordset for an MS Access Form to browse records.

    Here is a VBA sample code. (Of course, in this example using ADODB.Command for executing a simple SELECT Query to return records is senseless, but it's just for example. In my situation I call a stored procedure with parameters (including OUTPUT params and RETURN_VALUE) that also return records, and I wanted to use all advantages of ADODB.Command object for such multiple calls).

        Dim cnn As ADODB.Connection
        Dim adocmd As ADODB.Command
        Dim rst As ADODB.Recordset

        Set cnn = New ADODB.Connection
        cnn.CursorLocation = adUseClient
        cnn.Open "Provider=SQLOLEDB;Data Source=(local);Initial Catalog=TestDB;Persist Security Info=False;Integrated Security=SSPI;"

        Set adocmd = New ADODB.Record
        With adocmd
            Set .ActiveConnection = cnn
            .CommandType = adCmdText
            .CommandText = "SELECT 10 AS foo UNION SELECT 20"
            Set rst = .Execute
        End With

    ' Now `rst` has CursorLocation=adUseClient and CursorType=adOpenStatic
    ' and may be used as a Recordset for an MS Access Form
    ' If we are in form module, then one may set
    '       Set Me.Recordset = rst
    ' or even we could write before
    '        Set Me.Recordset = .Execute

    I'm writing a bit of Javascript (not quite a total newbie but gosh-darn close, though I have experience in other programming languages) to display some XML transformed by XSL. I've created the files to do this and if I use them seperately (sans Javascript), it displays just fine. And that's fine for browsers that have that capability and can handle that without issues, but I'd like to see if I couldn't increase its compatibility a bit by using (drum-roll) Javascript.

    Here's the contents of the two files. All of the info is completely made up.

  16. DataGrid Madness

    Date: 03/23/06 (C Sharp)    Keywords: programming, database

    Hello everyone:

    I'm curious if anyone has had in experiance with programming datagrids.

    I'm using "C#" and what I want to do is build a report writer.

    I populated a Datagrid from an Access database Table, now I want
    build controls that let user select what columns to put into their report
    and how to filter the rows based on the columns they've chosen.

    Ie.

    From a listbox you select Account# and ContactName.

    The Datagrid shows the full range of Account#'s and ContactName's.

    I want to give them a chance to filter the above datagrid by the rows they chose, in this case
    Account# and ContactName.

    I've devised that I want to try and build a 'Select' and refill and bind the dataset.

    I'm just unsure about how to set up the sorting/filtering part. *head scratch*

    Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    Hey everyone...I'm new to programming - taking a beginners C# class. I'm having problems with my latest project...been trying to figure it out all night. Can anyone help? I'm sure it's really simple.

    The project is simple - (we're learning about classes): create a form that allows a user to enter information about their pet into text boxes. Create a pet class. Output the summary of the information they entered onto a new form onto labels, not a messagebox.

    I believe I did it all correctly....but when I begin coding the Summary button code I get this error:

    'P6CM.SummaryForm.petNamelbl' is inaccessible due to its protection level

    This is the full code for that button.

    private void summaryBtn_Click(object sender, System.EventArgs e)
    {
    //displays the summary on a different form
    SummaryForm summaryFormObject = new SummaryForm();
    summaryFormObject.petNamelbl.Text = Pet.Name.ToString();
    summaryFormObject.Show();

    }

    I've tried so many things...has anyone experienced this error?

    How does one "create" a programming language?

    I mean, how was Sun Microsystems for example able to create Java?

  19. New Programmer Policy

    Date: 04/17/06 (Software)    Keywords: programming

    A friend of mine told me about this company policy when hiring computer programmers right out of college - especially for those with no programming experience on their resumes.

    "For the first year here, you have to maintain somebody else's code."
    "For the second year here, you may write new code, but you have to maintain your own code."

    The purpose for the policy was "New programmers need to demonstrate they can maintain existing code before they may write new code, and must demonstrate they can write maintainable code before they can expect somebody else to maintain their code."

    Just thought I would share.

  20. Looking For A Mid-Level Introduction To Object-Oriented Programming In PHP

    Date: 04/17/06 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, programming, java, shopping

    I'm a reasonably-experienced PHP programmer, but aside from minor tweakings in JavaScript and PERL, PHP's the only language I know. I'm redesigning my core shopping cart, and as such I'd really like to learn how Object-Oriented programming works, since I think that refactoring the back end to create, say, user objects and cart objects and inventory objects so forth would be much easier to maintain.

    Unfortunately, the OO books and pages I've found tend to break down into two rough categories:

    • "Hi, you know the fine details of object-oriented programming, so here's a bunch of complex PHP syntax that you will barely understand!"
    • "These are the basic ideas behind PHP Object-Oriented programming, but I will give you no code aside from a single class, when in practice you apparently never use isolated classes."
    I've read up on the basics and even a lot of design patterns... But can anyone recommend a book/site that explains how you'd put together several classes to create a functioning object-oriented program with classes that interact, explaining in practical terms (and plain English) the difference between, say, this->function() and this::function()?

    I need the power. And the help.
