1. Flash Player Design

    Date: 06/29/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

    Hi guys,

I am in the middle of quoting a pretty big web design project. The one thing I'm going to need to outsorce is the design of a few customized flash players... I have not gotten savvy with flash to the point of feeling able to do it myself.

I'm trying to get an idea of what this will cost so I can have an estimate to base the proposal off of. Does anyone here do this type of work, and/or have a general range of what it would cost? I am looking for both a music player (about 20 songs) with a customized look (bright, kid-friendly buttons that match the colors of the site), and possibly a movie player as well. And like I said, I'm looking for an estimated range, not a really specific price. I just want an idea of what cost I'll be passing on to the client.

And of course, if you're interested in the gig, let me know. I've gotten a bunch of really nonspecific replies from Craigslist (the kind that I, admittedly, send out myself: "Tell me more about the project before I quote you a price") that are not really helping me write this proposal right now... So someone who gives me useful information now would defininitely be given favor when making the decision.

  2. RSS?

Date: 06/28/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: html, web

First of all, I just want to say... hi, and I love you guys. I always come to this community to ask (often dumb) questions about HTML or web design and 99/100 times get the answer I need. I've never really said how much I appreciate everyone in this community and am so glad it exists!! So thanks!!

That said, here goes another (possibly dumb) question...
I have a blog at Blogger.com. I would like the most recent 2 or 3 headlines and maybe a snippet of the latest blog post to appear on the home page of a separate website I own. Is there a simple way of getting this to happen?

(As a note, I really don't care if the blog content is on Blogger.com or any other blog site, or even if I just type it into a txt doc... and I also don't care how many headlines show up or how much of the blog post is on the home page... so basically, I just want automatically updated blog content on my site that is integrated into the design of the home page.)

Anyone done this before? Does FeedBurner.com help people do this sort of thing?

    Thanks!

  3. Thunderbird's junk mail filtering, and cookies in FF

Date: 06/30/07 (Mozilla)    Keywords: web, linux, spam

I recently switched from XP to Ubuntu Linux, and with it switched from IE7 and Windows Live Mail Desktop to Firefox and Thunderbird. Firefox is fine, but I am not exactly impressed with Thunderbird so far.

My main email accounts are a pop3 one and a Hotmail account, so I downloaded the Webmail extension for Thunderbird, and it appears to be working fine, even if actually getting the right version of Thunderbird for it was a complete pain in the neck. (To explain, Webmail uses TB version 2, and Ubuntu's repositories only had 1.5.12. If you download the new version from Mozilla, it doesn't overwrite the older version despite what Mozilla says - it will run alongside it, ignoring all of your settings and refusing to import mail, so I had to do that manually.) My biggest problem with it at the moment is the way it deals with spam emails. I've been training it by giving it plenty of junk daily for the last three or so weeks, but it's only catching perhaps 60% of it, and at the same time is catching some legitimate emails. These aren't clever spams it's missing; the one I just marked as spam and moved was entitled "Would you like to show your partner/s your sexual strength and power?". Additionally, when it does catch it, if it's sent to my pop3 account it doesn't move it to the Junk folder like it's set up to. It moves junk from Hotmail easily, though.

Is there any way I can make it better, short of writing message filters myself to move things to Junk automatically? On Windows, WLM caught about 95% of spam and didn't keep putting real emails in Junk, and given how much praise there is for Thunderbird's spam filters I didn't expect them to be this unreliable. I've also found that I can't reply to Livejournal comments via Thunderbird, but seem to remember this was already a problem ages ago when I tried using Thunderbird for Windows, so I assume there isn't a workaround?

Firefox has been a much easier switch, but there are two features I'm missing from IE7. Is there any way to do the following?
    - set it up to prompt you on a per-domain basis to accept/reject cookies - it seems as if I can't do it from a dialog when I visit new sites like I did with IE, and have to produce a list of either blocked or allowed sites manually. Or, can I import IE's list of domains to reject cookies from? I don't want to have to keep clearing cookies manually.
    - make new tabs open my homepage by default rather than a blank page.

Thanks for any help you can give me :)

  4. New Project

Date: 06/30/07 (MySQL Communtiy)    Keywords: database, web

Recently, I thought up a new project that will be used for storing Recipes. This way I'd have access to my recipe box from anywhere, and all my recipes would be stored in one place, rather than at a bunch of different sites.

At this point I'm mostly just writing down the details of what I want it to do, but it occured to me that there are going to be a TON of database calls in this thing. Like, oodles. At least until I figure things out a bit better.

This brought up a question that has been lurking in the back of my mind for a while...Is it better to open a connection to a database, make your query/insert/whatever, and then close it again? Or is it better to open the connection at the initial pageload and then close it at the end of everything?

Since this is going to be web based, if I did just the single open/close, how would I guarantee that the connection is closed out properly?

Usually when I do something with databases, it's not intended to be used by a huge lot of people (this project included), but every function that makes queries/inserts/etc from the database also has it's own open/close statements to the database. I'm just wondering if that's the best way to do it on what might become a large scale project (because, frankly, this thing may turn into a beast really quickly).

  5. Overlapping text in Firefox 2.0.x

Date: 07/01/07 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: html, web

Recently I have notices a rather annoying "feature" of Firefox 2. When going to certain websites the text that is around a link or title is overlapping and rendered quite unreadable. For example, when I go to Wikipedia normally I see this but when I log into my profile, which is using the "Nostalgia" skin, I see this. If memory serves me, I remember something similar to this happening in the earlier versions of Firefox that I had used (ver 1.0.x), but that was a problem with tables if I remember right, not with links/titles. I have found some information about this here, which appears to be similar, but that problem appears to be with displaying things in tables. This does not happen when I log into IE7. This only happens on certain pages, which taking the Wikipedia example, makes me think it is with some sort of html coding (though I'm not sure as to what plus if it is improper coding, Wikipedia seems to be a rather popular page to have bad coding). If anyone has any suggestions/fixes, I'll be happy to hear it. I almost forgot as well, some pages have text that you can't display because it is off the end of the page. Even making the screen bigger of maximizing doesn't help.

Oh yes, i'm running Firefox 2.0.4 now, which I just upgraded from 2.0.2. After the upgrade it did the same thing. I also tried turning off the "linkification" plug-in, and turning off Greasemonkey. Neither worked.

P.S. This problem also crops up when I view a preview of this entry.

  7. Appleseed Release Version 0.7.2

Date: 07/01/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web, hosting, spam

The latest version of Appleseed (0.7.2) is now available. This version adds further functionality to the photo component, "tagging" functionality, and the ability for administrators to "trust" or "block" other nodes. A simple configuration page has also been added to the administration section for first time users.

The source code for this release can be downloaded at:

    http://sourceforge.net/projects/appleseed

If you're looking to set up a test site, I would recommend using Dreamhost.com. I currently use them for hosting appleseedproject.org and Appleseed is sure to work if installed on one of their shared accounts.

Appleseed is doing three things that are very cutting edge for the web:

    1. Distributed Social Networking - Taking social networking away from massive, monolithic sites like MySpace and Friendster and distributing it across potentially thousands of sites that all work together.

    2. Single Sign On - Similar to OpenID, Appleseed's single sign on focuses on end-user ease of use. If you have a login for one appleseed site, then you can log in using your appleseed address (for example, michael.chisari@appleseedproject.org) to authenticate you for any other appleseed site. More on OpenID is available at http://openid.net/

    3. Sender-Stores messaging: Based loosely on the IM2000 proposal, a Sender Stores system seeks to add accountability as a means to reducing and possibly eliminating spam. More on IM2000 is available at: http://www.im2000.org/

If you would like an invite to the test site (http://appleseedproject.org), just let me know and I'll send you an email.

  13. A big hairball's worth of trouble-DIVs, Footers, CSS

Date: 07/02/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: css, web

    Hi, new member!

I'm trying to design a new layout for my website, but I can't seem to get the sidebar to dispay correctly and work with the footer.

    http://www.evenstar.crowned-meadow.net/4.8

    http://www.evenstar.crowned-meadow.net/style.css

The sidebar tends to move with the content. If it's not long enough, it gets pushed up past where I want it to be-but the longer the content gets, the farther it moves down. Plus, it gets stuck behind the footer, which refuses to move down.

I want the sidebar to sit up near the top of the green bar, and not move with the content-and the footer to rest at the bottom of the page, under whichever DIV turns out to be longer.

However, I've been told that my layuot displays correctly in IE 7. The problem? I'm using IE 7!

As such, it may just be me...

Here's screencaps of what I see:

  19. Nav bars & divs in CSS

Date: 07/06/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: css, web

Sorry if the topic of this post is pretty basic -- our non-profit can't afford to hire a web developer, so we're trying to build a site ourselves. We're making progress in understanding CSS, but there's one thing I don't understand:

Let's say I have a webpage with a navbar, header and footer. The navbar is an unordered list of links. I can get this far. But I want the navbar, header, and footer to persist for each of the link options on the navbar.

The dumb way of doing this, I guess, is to simply write the navbar, header, footer, etc., into every linked page. But every site with a CSS-based navbar seems to have a way of producing the linked page within a div. From looking at page source, it isn't obvious to me how they're doing it.

My thanks to anyone who can offer a dumbed-down explanation for how this works.

  20. Credit Card Processing suggestions

Date: 07/06/07 (PHP Community)    Keywords: web, google

Y'all were so helpful with my idiotic line-break problem last week, I thought I'd ask about a slightly more troubling issue...

Only *after* I signed our company up for a PayPal Website Pro account did my boss tell me to scrap it, because he found out we'll be required to put their logo on our forms and accept PayPal Express. He's afraid this will somehow drive customers away.

Anyone have suggestions for credit card processing that fit the following requirements?

    • Is super, crazy cheap (like PayPal: $20/month + 35ยข + 2.something% per transaction)
    • Requires no logos, Google accounts, or anything else that will make our registration form appear "unprofessional" =P
    • Has lots of support for integration, and can be set up quite quickly, as our current e-commerce solution (are you sitting down?) is a form that emails the credit card information to our accountant, who rings it up manually. I hope they didn't actually pay anybody to set that up.

Alternatively, has anyone had good experience with PayPal, and can vouch for it not actually harming sales? I've looked at 2checkout, authorize.net, and worldpay, and PayPal still looks like the best option to me.

    Thanks!
