Battery help!
Date: 08/07/07
Keywords: no keywords
Hi! I hope some people can help with a battery problem I have been having. I have a Windows XP home edition dell laptop. For the second time my battery would not charge and the light would be yellow all the time and if my charger in the back of my computer ever my computer would shut down and not work of the battery. And then finally even when my charger was plugged in my computer turned off completely, and when I turned it back on the battery orange light was flashing. I took the battery out I no longer have this problem, but still have to keep my charger plugged in to my computer. So basically the battery is not charging for some reason eve though it is connected to my charger and computer and it was new. Any help on what is wrong with my battery and how to fix it?

Internet Pages Failing to Load
Date: 08/03/07
Keywords: web
I've been having a strange problem the past few days.
I turn on my computer, click on Internet Explorer, my home page loads, I can do everything I usually do, open multiple pages, all works fine. I walk away to get lunch or whatever. When I come back no matter what I try to do - refresh a page, open a new website, click on something on a page that is up - I get the "cannot find server" or "page failed to load" error page. I hit refresh a few times, keep getting the error, then a minute or so later everything is back to normal and I can continue using all the pages that I had up.
So basically it's like for a minute or so after every time I come back from not using the computer the connection is stalled. I never have to restart or turn my modem on or off. It does come back on it's own.
Any idea what is causing this?
I'm running Windows XP, using a DSL connection, one computer only, using IE.
The only new thing I know has been installed is Sonic Wall Global VPN client but I'm not using that at all when this error is occurring. I still think maybe somehow this is causing it but I can't figure out how to go about checking that. I have Windows Task Manager up and Sonic Wall is not listed in the applications or processes, but it is listed on the networking tab.
Thanks for any help you can provide.

Movie Maker issues
Date: 08/02/07
Keywords: no keywords
I just got a laptop with Vista and the newest version of Windows Movie Maker. It's worked perfectly, and I made a video, but when I go to save it, it squishes the image down and adds random green to the bottom of the screen. This never happened with my other version of Movie Maker, and really, this should work, but many of my saving options keep doing this.
Any idea what's causing it? Screenshots here to show what I mean.
Thank you in advance!

blue screen of death x.x
Date: 08/01/07
Keywords: virus, spyware
i posted here awhile back about my notebook, and have problems with that and my router. well the problem was'nt solved, so i figured i would just update on that first. my laptop is actually in a worse condition now.. through no fault of my own of course, and is just being used as an extra server. thank the summer storms and a leaky roof for that one.
anyway, my problem now is about another machine. this is an old pentium3 compaq pc. it's not mine but one of my roomates, and even though i don't use it i'm being blamed for the problem. how fun! so here it is.when i kept hearing screaming and yelling i went into the other computer room, being asked why "I" had been installing programs on it. i was told which ones they were, and found the idiot owner screwing with BIOS, trying to fix the problem even though she has no idea what she's doing. when i got on to help, all it was doing was restarting, giving the option to start in safe or normal mode, then when you start it back up the windows logo comes on, and then this horrible blue screen. it's a full screen with a few paragraphs of text at the top, and then more text at the bottom. this happens for only half-a second before it restarts and it goes on for days.
now, all i could think of doing is reformatting windows. which i've done multiple times already on this machine, because the idiot likes to download viruses and spyware. i can get windows to start to install, it goes all the way to 34 minutes, before the devices are installed the machine cuts off, and then restarts. once again on a continous loop. so that's where i'm at right now. i'm hoping this is a very common problem with a somewhat simple fix. i'd rather not ave to go out and buy a new harddrive for this pc, especially since my pc is still dead, and i'm out a notebook of my own as well.
any help with this would be awesome right now, thanks in advance.

problem uninstalling programs in Vista
Date: 07/26/07
Keywords: no keywords
So, my girlfriend just got a new notebook computer and it's running Windows Vista. I was going through her computer cleaning it up and uninstalling programs that she doesn't need. I've done it a million times to a bunch of different computer systems. When I tried uninstalling a few programs on her computer an error message popped up saying "setup resource not found." It happened for a few different programs and all I want is to uninstall a few programs. Does anyone know the cause of this message and how I can correct it???
Thank you.

Sound problem
Date: 07/26/07
Keywords: software, web
Alright I will try not to be confusing..
I am having a HUGE problem with sound/video on my computer.
It skips & sounds distorted during windows startup and also during the first few seconds of playing a new song on itunes. Also sounds distorted when I get random sounds from IM's or websites.
On streaming video sites like youtube, the video will sometimes(almost all the time) run in slow motion as will the sound. If the sound is distorted, the video will run in slow motion. Sometimes the video will run fine but the sound will still skip.
Things that I have done to try to fix it:
-Going to gateway.com and downloading a sound driver update (didn't work)
-pushing ctrl, alt, delete to try and close down some processes after suggestion by geek squad member at Best Buy who told me that I should only have 30-40 processes working at one time. I had 43 but besides explorer, aim, and itunes, nothing else was taking up a lot of space.
It's a 2005 gateway laptop 6510gz but it has had to be sent away to the best buy service center for the following problems:
1st- had to have the power adapter replaced has it stopped powering my computer
2nd- had to replace the LCD monitor & also had the motherboard replaced
3rd- had to replace the LCD monitor once again and also had to replace the motherboard, once again
4th- had the fan, power adapter, and battery replaced
-I have an extended warranty but it will not cover software problems so I'm left to try and fix this sound problem by myself although it has been in ongoing problem for the last year. I do not remember if it happened all at once or if it was gradual.

Grr. Driver Issues
Date: 07/25/07
Keywords: web
OK, Here's the scoop.
One of my users had a computer. The PSU blew and took the MB with it (for whatever reason).
I do not have the parts kicking around to replace these so I went and grabbed the cheapest machine I could from the nearby Best Buy to get a machine back up and running as quickly as possible.
The problem is that the machine had Vista on it.
The user has applications that are needed that do not yet have Vista versions and the XP versions do not run right in Vista.
The machine I bought has XP drivers on the eMachines website, but they do not work.
Changing OSs is not supported by eMachines support. (why do they provide XP driers, expecially ones that do not work?)
I used the Belarc System Advisor to get the part number of the MB and then went to the manufacturer's website to see if they have XP drivers. They do not, Vista only.
The part number is mcp61pm2ma and it claims the manufacturer is Gateway.
Anyone know where I can get drivers for this board for XP?

Dvd-player sound issue
Date: 07/23/07
Keywords: no keywords
Okay, so I have a cd-rom/dvd player which can also burn cd-roms, not dvds. It's about two years old now, and was in my computer when I bought it. I've had no issues with it so far until a couple of weeks ago.
The problem is, while it plays the dvd movies smoothly the sound is bad. It cracks, jumps and is basicly annoying. It didn't have this issue before, so I have no idea what's wrong. Additionally I played a movie which I had burned to a cd-rom the other week and the picture kept flipping upside down, no idea what that was but that's the only time it's happened, so it could just be the movie file.
So what I'm asking, anyone have any idea what's up with it? I bought some new dvds today and I'd like to watch them, heh.
CPU seems just fine, drivers are up to date and the computer says it works just fine. Problem occurs in any dvd-playing program I have. Sound on movies played from hard drive is fine.

recovering files from a laptop
Date: 07/23/07
Keywords: no keywords
My laptop just crapped out on me today, and I want to see if I could set the laptop's hard drive as a slave on my desktop. The desktop is running Windows Vista, while my laptop had been running XP Pro. (It says that a windows\config\system file is missing/corrupted, but I won't be able to get to my XP cd for at least a month [if ever T^T])
Where would I go to buy an adaptor to connect it to my PC, and are there any step-by-step walkthroughs for this process?

Problem with XP Startup and Shutdown Sounds
Date: 07/18/07
Keywords: no keywords
I have XP home. Just recently, I noticed that my startup and shutdown sounds fail to play when i'm starting up or shutting down my computer. They always worked before, so i'm not sure of what could be wrong. The strange thing is ..
.. yes, my speakers are on and my sound works fine
.. All other system sounds and other sounds work fine (the logon/logoff sounds work)
.. The 'startup' and 'shutdown' sounds work when I preview them in 'Sounds and Audio Devices'
.. I'm the admin of the computer and it's the only user account I have (besides the 'Guest' Account which isn't used)
It's not a big problem, but i'd like to fix it if possible. Does anyone know what could be wrong?
Thanks.

Recover files from old HD
Date: 07/16/07
Keywords: no keywords
My computer runs on Windows XP Pro, it used to work alright albeit a little slow since its quite old. I'm planning to replace it by the end of the month, but unfortunately, it seems to have decided to take an early retirement.
After running Recovery Console and running chkdsk on C:/ it gave me the following message: "The volume appears to contain one or more unrecoverable problems."
I ran DIR on the same directory, it gave me this message: "An error occurred during directory enumeration."
I don't really mind if I can't get the old computer running again since I'm due to replace it anyway but I desperately want to save some files from that old HD. I'm thinking of taking it out and putting it inside an external HD enclosure so that I can try to access my files via another computer. Is this a good idea at all? Do the error messages above show any indication at all whether or not I can still recover my files?
Any other suggestions would be really helpful.
Thank in advance to anyone who can help.

An interesting issue
Date: 07/12/07
Keywords: software, database
I was presented with a laptop that had been partitioned (supposedly by the manufacturer) in a very odd manner: 15GB C drive, 54GB D drive and the remainder of the 80GB drive as unpartitioned space.
I needed to install a piece of software that has a minimum requirement of 20GB. This requirement included the estimated database size that would, ultimately, be user-generated. Obviously, 20GB is not available on a 15GB partition.
So, I used Acronis to image all the partitions on the drive and then I re-partioned the drive to a single volume. When I restore the image from the original C partition to the new C partition everything goes fine. I set the new partition to be the active partition (e.g. boot-able) and all the data appears to get restored fine. Except for one issue, after re-booting, it will not boot. It claims it cannot boot the to partition and that my hardware configuration is wrong.
After trying this a few time with various different settings all recieving the same result I thought about doing a "dirty" restore. So I did. I installed a clean version of windows (XP Pro) to the disk and then I did a restore over the windows directory. At first glimpse, this worked.... but it has different issues. All the data and settings seemed to carry over but my wireless settings are not correct (in fact the services associated with them are not even running) and a program that uses audio will also not run. I am also having issues with the user-content synchronization with the server (even on the wired network, which works even though I cannot get to the settings).
I know I should have written down the exact boot error message, but I figured I would be able to solve the issue....
Anyone have any thoughts? I really do not want to have to manually restore all the files and install all the programs from scratch unless I absolutely have to.
Thanks!

Problems with iTunes and My Music...
Date: 07/12/07
Keywords: no keywords
Some history: because I like to confuse myself, long ago I installed iTunes on my C drive, but all my music was stored on my external harddrive (drive F, for clarity).
Recently I received a new internal harddrive. The IT guy at my mother's work offered to install it and 'ghost' (I think that's the word he used...) everything from my old C drive onto the new one.
For some reason he changed my external drive F to drive H, and now iTunes is having problems. It won't let me uninstall or reinstall because the "My Pictures" folder 'contains an invalid character'. The guy who installed my new harddrive somehow changed the folder names from My Music to [my name]'s Music and My Pictures to [my name]'s Pictures, and whenever I try to edit them I get an error message saying "Cannot rename My Music: The source and destination file names are the same."
Is there any way I can fix this? Being a university student who travels by bus, I basically live off of my iPod, and no new music would make me a very sad person...
Sorry if this makes no sense at all, and thanks.

IE7 certificate errors
Date: 07/12/07
Keywords: security, web
My laptops got Windows Vista Home. In the last few days I've had trouble logging onto a lot of websites I've never had problems with. First it started as not being able to have my user name and password saved due to some sort of cookie error. I tried deleting the offending cookies so they could reset the next time I logged into the sites. Now in the past few days whenever I try to log into a site, from Netflix to my bank website to my Hotmail account, I get "Certificate Error: Navigation Blocked" and "There is a problem with this website's security certificate. This organization's certificate has been revoked. Security certificate problems may indicate an attempt to fool you or intercept any data you send to the server." I can't even get answers from Windows Live Help because I can't log in with my Windows ID, I get the same damned error. What can I do to fix this?

How do I get rid of the annoying "tooltips" in IE?
Date: 07/11/07
Keywords: google
Hi! I hope this is the place to ask and possibly the place where I get help.
I have IE at work. No Firefox allowed. Whenever I open google and hover my mouse over the search bar, the little yellow tooltip flag on the mouse appears, saying "Goodle-Search" or alternatively "Search" when you have already done a search. Not only does it appear, it flickers on and off, showing the mouse pointer and the text curser alternatingly.
What's annoying is - it prevents me from actually clicking the search bar so the cursor focus jumps there. It also prevents me two out of three times to mark the old search text and replace it with a new one (something I do with the mouse, usually).
It's really unnerving. It doesn't happen with my IE at home. I use 7.0.5730.11.
I googled (painfully) and found that a) it's not a tooltip but an alt text attribute or b) it may be the title attribute.
Any suggestions how to get rid of that? I don't care if it shuts off all the tooltips or alts or titles or just the ones that annoy me. I have no admin rights here, but if it is necessary to change the registry, I may get an admin to do it for me.
Thanks much!

Hello!

Ordinarily I would check this comm thoroughly to make sure my question hasn't been asked before but I'm having trouble with my computer. Sorry about being (possibly) repetitious.
How do you get rid of a write-protected trojan? I have the ASH downloader trojan stuck on my PC and I've run McAffee Virus Scan, SpyBot and Ad Aware both in and out of Safe Mode but I can't reach the damn thing. Every time I run a scan in Safe Mode my PC freezes as soon as I hit Delete or Quarantine Problem. Help, please!
