  3. InnoDB

    Date: 08/05/05 (MySQL Communtiy)    Keywords: php, mysql, sql, web, apache

    hey guys, me again -

    i've got mysql 4.1.13a-nt running on win xp pro (apache and php4 as well, shouldn't be relevant tho) and I'm trying to set up and use InnoDB (for the foreign keys) - whenever I make a new table in EMS MySQL Manager or through the command-line utility and try to set it as InnoDB, when the table appears, it's always MyISAM

    I'm sure my MySQL Manager version supports InnoDB since it works when I create an InnoDB table on my webhost, it's only not working locally

    I did the InnoDB config on install of MySQL - is there anything else I have to set or enable to use InnoDB?

  4. How About Boosting Firefox's Speed?

    Date: 08/05/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: software, browser, web

    If you are interested in putting more pep into your Firefox browser, start tweaking your software as follows:

    1. Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit Return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

    a. network.http.pipelining
    b. network.http.proxy.pipelining
    c. network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

    Normally the browser will make one request to to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

    2. Alter above entries as follows:

    a. Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true" (clicking the entry twice)
    b. Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true" (clicking the entry twice)
    c. Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 8. This means it will make 8 requests at once. The default is 4. Do not exceed over 8, since this is the maximum allowed; a higher number will not make the browser any faster.

    3. Lastly, right-click anywhere and select New->Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives. If you are using a broadband connection you'll load pages much faster now. For those of you who are using a dial-up connection you will notice a slight speed increase.

    Drive carefully,

    Omar.-

  5. using postnuke for subdomains?

    Date: 08/06/05 (PHP Community)    Keywords: database, web

    Okay maybe you guys can help me with this!
    I'm wanting to set up a large website with subdomains for every user who signs up. Now I know I need to do this by using databases but frankly, they confuse the heck outta me, but I at least know enough about maintaining postnuke. I want each user to be able to submit their own work, and for all of the work to be able to be displayed on the main page. (I am hoping for a format much like deviantart.com). It's a community/user based website.
    So can I somehow use postnuke to be able to let each user create their own subdomain which they can submit their own work?
    Also, I'm pretty sure I could figure out how to do this, but can I totally revamp the design created by postnuke, and take away that completely "forums"ish look to it?
    Anyone feel like doing some majorly hard pro-bono work for a broke idiot who really wants to make a good website? lol Hey it's worth a shot, right? I'm getting desperate!
    Any tips on how I might use postnuke more to my benefit would be great.
    Thanks

  6. You Don't Know Jack About Firefox

    Date: 08/06/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: rss, browser, asp, web

    In my last post in this journal, there was an positive and active discussion about the pros and cons of tweaking FX in an effort to increase its speed. Learning from the experience, I promised myself I would start researching FX characteristics and features.

    Just by luck, I stumbled upon an article with the title, "You Don't Know Jack About Firefox" written by Cheah Chu Yeow. Chu Yeow is an aspiring J2EE developer and Web developer studying at the National University of Singapore. He wrote the book "FireFox Secrets", which lifts the lid on Firefox's lesser-known functionality.

    In this book Chu Yeow wrote, "If you feel that the Web has lost its sparkle, that's probably because you're slogging across it in an old browser. I'm over here on the other side, and the grass is not only greener: there are none of those microscopic grass bugs that cause nasty rashes!"

    "The title contains over 290 pages of Firefox tips, tricks and hacks, providing invaluable pointers to help you customize the browser to your specific preferences." Sounds good, doesn't it?

    "It starts with some of the better-known tweaks, such as search customizations and favorites, password, and history management. But later chapters challenge even the most hardened Firefox devotee, revealing the inner workings of Web developer extensions, RSS feed subscription, and the little-known about:config interface."

    For your convenience, in case you are interested in further exploring FX, the following URL will take you to the aforementioned article which consist of six pages:

  7. 6.0.1

    Date: 08/06/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: web

    I just downloaded 6.0.1, and I'm having a spot of trouble. Since I downloaded it, I'm unable to access >any< web pages. My bookmarks ceased working, and typing in addresses does no better - every attempt is rewarded with a message box "example.website not found. Please check name and try again." I tried add/removing the version and downloading again, but that didn't help, and I tried creating a new profile, but that did nothing, either.

    A point of interest: even after I "removed" my old version and downloaded a new copy, my old bookmarks and properties show up. Is this normal, or does it suggest that the old version might be the flawed one, and it's just not deleting when I tell it to?

    Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    K

  8. MP3 files now downloading as movies?

    Date: 08/07/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: web

    I recently downloaded an updated version of Windows media player. I don't remember exactly why, because I never use it, but ever since then, my PC seems to think it's funny to download MP3's as movie clips. Now, it works just fine for me to download an MP4 from iTunes, but when trying to download any MP3 from any website, I double check to make sure that it has an mp3 extension, download, and then nothing will open the file. It gives it an mpeg extension automatically. It saves as Windows media player as being the default system to open it with, so I'm pretty sure that's the problem, but I can't figure out what to do about it. Has anyone ever seen this? Can you tell me a way to fix it? :) Thanks!

    After having put a project of mine on hold due to time constraints with school and work, as well as technical issues involving my own stupidity (You'd laugh if I told you, seriously, I'm so brain dead some times), I've gotten back to trying to muddle my way through ASP.NET.

    So my "Totally Obvious Question of the Day"TM is this: I've got a library file that I want to include in my webform, but I can't find the commands to actually include the file.

    It's always the easy stuff that gets me. *sigh*

  12. USB drive issue

    Date: 08/08/05 (Computer Help)    Keywords: web

    I run Windows 2000 SP4 on my Dell laptop. With no DVD burner and less than 10 gigabytes on my C drive, I managed to acquire an old (I think; it doesn't look like any of the images of current drives on the WDC site) Western Digital USB drive. It seems to be from the WD60 series.

    It took some effort--originally by my father, who provided the drive--to get it working with my computer and recognized as the E drive. After that, it worked fine--until I shut it down to avoid overheating in the depths of summer. Once again, it took some effort by my father to get my computer to recognize it.

    Just a few days ago, after being reassured that this time it would work after I reattached it, I unplugged everything (making sure to properly stop the USB drive before removing it). When I reattached the drive, it was once again not recognized. This time, my father claims whatever he did last time (he's kind of vague on what that was) failed to work, so he gives up.

    Taking matters into my own hands, I repeatedly reinstalled drivers and downloaded new ones from the WDC website. I uninstalled and reinstalled a number of other USB devices. I restarted again and again.

    The device shows up in Device Manager as a USB drive, and the drive itself shows up as a disk drive. It does not appear in either Disk Management or the My Computer window. Device Manager claims that it's working perfectly. In fact, the only thing there that it says isn't working perfectly is a PCI device, for which the proper drivers don't seem to be installed. I'm not sure if that's relevant to this problem or not.

    Help?

    I have tried to get BBClone to work with our (.shtml-page format based) website, and it's proving more and more frustrating than productive. It will be perfect once our redesign is complete and PHP is integrated...but for now, I can't seem to get it working properly.

    Our server has a full-on web tracker program already installed for most tracking needs, but I am in need of a simple program that can track and count hits for a "Top 10 visited stories" feature we need to run & update weekly.

    If anyone has experience in a newspaper/journalism website formats with a program/counter like I am needing...info or help would be much appreciated!

    Hello again.. have any of you found good asp.net 2.0 books or tutorials since the last time I posted? I purchased 2..

    Beginning ASP.NET 2.0 Databases Beta Preview
    This was a decent intro but it was a bit repetitive which made it a lil boring and it was terribly riddled with errors. Many were so obvious -- it made me wonder if anyone proofread the final draft.

    ASP.NET 2.0 Developer's Notebook by Wei-Ming Lee
    I really like this book. It had lots of examples and most of them worked. It covers many asp.net 2.0 subjects including personalization, web parts, themes & skins, etc. The faked coffee cup stains also add a nice touch ;)

    Thought I'd share this with the community. I'll be writing a real walkthrough soon, as this combo is too good to keep to myself.
    Would love to hear any comments, criticisms, or alternatives. If anyone is interested in helping write a few pages on the topic, send me an email or something too.

    What do you get when you combine an automated database object abstraction layer, an embedded templating engine, and an AJAX library?

    Unparalled rapid modular development fusing the web's hottest technologies.
    And it's easy.

    PEAR DB_DataObject
    PHP Smarty
    xajax

    What's it look like? Here's a teenie example.

    index.php

    		printJavascript(); ?>
    		Test

    ID:

    ajax.php
    addAssign("content","innerHTML", $v->getNote($id));

    	return $objResponse->getXML();
    }

    $xajax = new xajax();

    $xajax->registerFunction("getNote");
    $xajax->processRequests();
    ?>

    template.php
    template_dir = 'tpl/';
    		$this->compile_dir = 'tpl/comp';
    		$this->config_dir = 'tpl/conf';
    		$this->cache_dir = 'tpl/cache';
    	}

    	function getNote($id = null) {
    		$note = DB_DataObject::Factory('notes');
    		$note->get($id);
    		$this->assign('note', $note);
    		return $this->fetch('note.tpl');
    	}
    }
    ?>

    tpl/note.tpl
    {$note->name}
    {$note->body}

    data.php

  20. Is Linux Piggybacking Firefox?

    Date: 08/10/05 (Mozilla)    Keywords: browser, web, linux, microsoft

    One of the main setbacks of Firefox from becoming an ubiquitous browser, is its resistance of use by the corporate community. However, FX is slowly entering this market through the back door; meaning through the Linux operating system. Overriding the many obstacles from Microsoft, Linux has a stronghold in the server market. It is also well known, that Firefox has been embraced by the top brass of some Linux companies such as Red Hat and Suse.

    Firefox is the default web browser in Red Hat and Suse Linux, though it's also widely used on Windows, and has been gaining market share. IBM has also been known as a heavy Firefox user and a Linux promoter. As Linux continues to gain popularity in the business community, it will probably piggyback Firefox into the corporate scene. Here is where the big guys play; in the business community.

    Earlier this year, IBM advertised it was willing to hire Firefox programmers. The writing is on the wall.
