1. I am having major problems with my webhost.

    Date: 12/15/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: mysql, sql, web

    I am currently with Powweb. Are any of you really happy with your webhost? Why do you like them so much? I am disliking Powweb at this point because they have a MySQL problem that has been going on for over 3 months and they seem either incapable or unwilling to fix it. The result is that they have speed problems on their sites that utilize MySQL and it's a big issue. I'm talking 1 to 3 minute loading times. So I'm about to take a loss on the money I just paid them last month for a year of service and go elsewhere.

    I had been dealing with them since they were a small company (since about 2000) and they were great then, but since they've been taken over by Endurance, they are horrid. I was unaware because I spent a couple of years just maintaining the account and not putting a site up and now that I'm trying to put a site up, I encounter the nightmare that they have become.

    I had heard good things about siteground.com, but after doing some research, they seem really limited and quick to shut you down so I don't want to trade one migraine for another. bluehost.com also seems to have a good reputation. Does anyone have an opinion?
    Here are some opinions on Powweb at epinions.

  2. Excel 2007 Help?

    Date: 12/15/07 (Computer Geeks)    Keywords: web

    I'm not an Excel guru by any means. Here's where I am -

    I have a spreadsheet with 140,000 rows. Each row has a numeric ID, a date/time stamp, a fully-qualified domain name and another fully-qualified domain name. The first is the path to a web page, the second is the HTTP_REFERRER. Finally, there is an IP address.

    In essence, 140,000 rows from a web site's usage log, nicely formatted and placed in the appropriate fields.

    They're called "id" "timestamp" "domain" "referrer" and "hostaddress"

    What I need to do is create some charts that analyze this data.

    Specifically, a pie chart that shows how many hits there were to any given "domain" ... of the 140,000 rows, the "domain" field is one of about 250 different possible domains.

    I'd also like a pie chart showing the number of hits from the top 20 or so IP addresses, with everything else lumped as "other"

    A pie chart showing how many rows have data in "referrer" vs. how many rows do not would be useful.

    See where I'm going with this?

    Anyone guru-level on Excel 2007 who can help 'splain how I might accomplish this?

  3. Volume icon help needed for PC

    Date: 12/16/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: web

    No surprise that I've managed to mess up my computer a little bit by tinkering with it. I must have deleted a program i thought was useless to make more space on my hard drive & now i want it back.

    My situation: I have a Dell Inspiron 6000 that runs Windows XP Home. The Inspiron has volume buttons on the front of the deck. These still work fine, but my volume control screens are gone. It used to be that when I pushed one of the volume buttons, a screen would pop up to show me my volume level & whether it was muted or not. I don't know what happened to that little screen, but I miss it. Come back little screen! The volume icon later went missing from the task bar, though i never liked that one much, anyway.

    I went through my Control Panel for the Sounds & Devices folder where there seems to be the easy fix check box: "Place volume icon in the task bar" but when I click on that, an error box tells me "Windows cannot display the volume control icon on the taskbar because the Volume Control program has not been installed. To install it, use Add/Remove program in control panel" though I couldn't find that on the program list. Mind you, my volume buttons still work, it just takes a lot of fiddling with them to figure out whether the volume is muted or just all the way down.

    Any help anyone could offer would be sincerely appreciated. I've done a bunch of web searches, but haven't really found what I'm looking for. Thanks in advance!

  4. How To Truly Delete Pages in MODx

    Date: 12/16/07 (Java Web)    Keywords: database, web

    MODx is an excellent AJAX enabled content management system, which is leagues ahead of Joomla / Mambo. One of the features of MODx is that pages aren’t fully deleted. They are marked as deleted (displayed as strike-through items) and they are not displayed on the web. However they still remain in the database. This is [...]

  5. random text

    Date: 12/17/07 (PHP Community)    Keywords: database, sql, web

    I have 15 random paragraphs of text, each a couple sentences long, nothing major. I want to display a random one on the main page of a website every time the page loads. I am not terribly concerned with the flexibility or expandability of this script, I just don't want it to slow anything else down... I once took down a sql server because I had way too many queries on a web page, and since then I've been a little paranoid about using tons of database-driven stuff. Then again if I just hard-code all the text into the script, my 500 byte script or whatever will be 10x the size it once was, since it'll have to load all the text.

  6. fluid layouts

    Date: 12/17/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: web

    Since upgrading from a 800x600 screen resolution to a 1280x800 resolution, I have found my previous screen resolution is still restricting my layouts for my sites. I don't want to make me layouts any bigger than an 800x600 res because I want everyone to be able to see my site(s) correctly. I asked around, and everyone is telling me fluid is the way to go.

    Does anyone have any good tutorials/website links on how to make current website layouts fluid? Or would I have to totally redesign the graphics for all of them?

    Thanks.

  7. IIS vs Apache 2

    Date: 12/18/07 (Web Development)    Keywords: virus, web, apache

    I am having problems working with both IIS and Apache.

    When I turn on IIS, for some reason other people on my network cannot access my server website files, and the same thing happens when I turn off IIS and turn on Apache.

    I can access the web server on my laptop, but for some reason it does not work for other users in my network.

    It used to work before, but that was before I wiped my computer (virus) and before we got a new router for our network. Does this have anything to do with me being on a wireless network instead of a LAN? I was on a wireless network when it worked before. If this is the case then how come I can wirelessly access my router through my laptop?

    Any idea where the problem might be?

    Hi, all,

    I spent most of the year working on a book, Adpating to Web Standards: CSS and Ajax for Big Sites, with some talented people. It's geared to help Web agencies and large companies with their own Web teams learn how to incoporate Web standards into their workflow, but also will help individual Web designers trying to figure out to make their Web sites more roust.

    Published by New Riders in December 2007, the book is divided into two parts: the theory and the pratical case studies. The first part covers chapters by Rob Cherny and Kimberly Blessing on HTML, CSS, JavaScript, Web Applications and Web Standards Worflow. The second part by Meryl K. Evans and Kevin Lawver covers Tori Amos’s official Web site and AOL.com.

    I'm running a book contest right now on my Web site to give away three copies of the book.

  10. Messenger issues

    Date: 12/22/07 (Computer Help)    Keywords: virus, antivirus, web, spyware, yahoo

    Hello dear community who has helped me out a lot by now.

    I've great issues with web messengers like MSn, Yahoo-Messenger and the newer versions of AIM.
    They all refuse to connect (basically right away as if they were blocked), only an older version of AIM can connect, the newer verions which are available for download everywhere aren't working.

    I'm using the Windows firewall on Windows XP and suspected it to be the one at fault first but I checked it and appearently that is not the problem here as I've put the msn and aim exes on the list to be not blocked, still not working.

    Before I've been running out of my Norton trial I've been using their firewall and the newer AIm version which refuses to work now worked perfectly fine then (this is why I assumed Windows firewall right away)

    I'm also using AVG antivirus (though not the firewall because it's not part of the free version appearently?) and Spyware doctor, if this has any revelance to what's happening here.

    How can this be fixed?

    Date: 12/22/07 (PHP Community)    Keywords: php, programming, mysql, software, database, sql, postgresql, web, hosting

    Hello Friends

    I am interested in exploring web programming via Lisp, Ruby on Rails, and several of the popular Python frameworks.

    Here are the features I am interested in:

    * Lisp hosting including access to web servers and/or mod_lisp
    * Ruby on Rails hosting
    * Python hosting
    * Configurable source control repository with public and private areas (SVN/Trac or better)
    * SSH access
    * MySQL or PostgreSQL database
    * PHP support (for third-party software packages)

    Has anyone here had similar needs? Would you recommend any particular hosting solution?

  12. wmode in firefox

    Date: 12/23/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: browser, web, linux, google

    I started re-working my website for the new year, I gave in and started using Flash. And I like it - it's a pretty nifty thing.

    Problem is, I need my Flash animations to be transparent using the 'wmode=transparent' parameter, otherwise they float right above the text and block out everything. This isn't a problem in IE6 (or any other browser I've tested) but in Firefox it is impossible to use the Flash navigation. In Linux it does even stranger things.

    Does anyone know of a workaround for this? I've googled around to no avail. I've tried z-indexing, but that doesn't work.

    If it's just a bug in Firefox I'll just let it go and Firefox users can suck it up :P

    Link: the site is here functional, not fully complete yet. IE7 does some wonky things, but I'm working on that.

    Thanks!

    Date: 12/26/07 (Web Development)    Keywords: asp, web

    Hey Gang,

    I'm creating a website and was wondering if there was a way to centralize changes that would take effect on every webpage by referencing the base page/layout. For example, if I made a menu, the menu would show on every page without me having to copy and paste the code. I know there are master pages with ASP, but is there any other way? What's the "old school" way of doing this?

  15. login page?

    Date: 12/26/07 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, mysql, sql, web

    I'm new to the community! Nice to meet you.

    I want to create an index page on my domain that has a box that requires a login and password before allowing users to see any other pages. I can password protect directories on my domain's cpanel, but when I use that a grey box pops up asking for the username and password over and over again. I'd like users of my website to only have to login once. I've found a few free scripts that almost do what I am wanting but most of them are community oriented with member profile pages. It looks like the easiest way to do what I am wanting to do it by using php and mysql. I've found a few tutorials but I can never seem to get them to work for me. I'm relatively new to sql and php so I'm trying to be patient with myself but I am getting frustrated. Any suggestions? Thank you

  16. a little frustrated with javascript vs. PHP

    Date: 12/27/07 (Web Development)    Keywords: php, css, java, web

    Hi guys,

    I have a webpage dedicated to stylesheets, and I want the stylesheet's source code to pop up in a new window when ever that stylesheet is clicked and for the page's style to change. I got the stylesheet to show up in a new window and got the stylesheet to change, but for convenience purposes, I would like the new window to also have a close button and a div to scroll through the stylesheet so it's probably best to have one PHP page with an "include "mystylesheet.css" , but how do I get the CSS to change whenever a user clicks on a different stylesheet?

    I'm assuming the best way to do this is with JavaScript, but what do I put into my statement?

    Thanks

    Happy Coding!

  17. CSS - Dreamweaver

    Date: 12/28/07 (Web Development)    Keywords: css, html, web

    Hi everyone I'm a newbie in the community and also with ethe whole web design thing. I have dreamweaver mx in my computer and I opened an account in freewebs a while ago, I thought about using HTML cause it seems easier but when I try that and insert a table to create the whole body of the page I have no idea how to make the links in the right to go to the main frame, If I use frames they get all messy and I really like how CSS turns out but I am not sure how to use the links in the right. Does anyone know of any tutorials? I tried googling some but they are not being that helpful.

    I want something like this - http://www.freewebs.com/sweethoneysvideos/

    And when I try to paste like style code it won't work so I have no idea. I worked in CSS and it was looking really good but I have no idea how to make the links to open in the mainframe.

    Can someone please help me?

    ETA: Sorry I am such a rambler and I usually can't explain myself the way I want to sorry.

  18. Floating images

    Date: 12/28/07 (WebDesign)    Keywords: css, web

    And the saga of creating a tableless webpage on my own continues...

    So far, I surprised myself by having all my ideas turn out excellent. It's brilliant. I don't know. I have achieved so much in such a short time for someone researching on their own. It's been a pain though, seriously. There are things I don't understand still, but that'll come with time. I don't have to learn it JUST by redesigning my page in CSS. There will be other webpages.

    Anyway, I have a question.

    I want to float an image in the bottom right hand corner of my page and have it stay there while the person scrolls down. This page is fluid. Joy.
    I've managed to get the image to do this, but in the bottom left hand corner...

    So, my question is, is this possible? If so, how do you do this?
    I've attempted to look up a solution already, but everything tells me it's not, so I'm hoping someone else can tell me otherwise.

    This is what I figured out just now, but it's not perfect...

    #bottom_fade img {

    width: 300px;

    height: 300px;

    float: right;

    }

    /* FADE */

    #bottom_fade {

    width: auto;

    height: 200px;

    z-index: 80;

    position: fixed;

    bottom: 0%;

    background-image: url("../images/bottom-fade.png");

    background-repeat: repeat-x;

    Thanks for your help!
    The page is nearly complete, so I'll have it up and ready for critique within the next few weeks.

  20. .NET Remoting on port 80 -- reasonable?

    Date: 12/29/07 (C Sharp)    Keywords: software, xml, database, asp, web, linux, hosting, microsoft

    All,

    As those of us who have worked with attempting to make any logically partitioned/layered OO schema work between .NET client applications and WebServices know, it's simply not possible without going far out of your way to do a lot of extra work that the elegant OO inheritance/extension was supposed to alleviate anyway. When I am especially irked about this issue, I will construct job interviews with the following two questions spaced one after the other:

    n) Do you consider yourself a fully object-oriented developer, familliar with the concepts of inheritance, extension, abstract classes, interfaces, with the ability to both understand and work with the boundaries/"layers"/"tiers" between classes for a given software project (e.g. Database/Business Objects/User Interface)?

    m) If so, what do you consider the most effective way to transmit an instance or instances of a business object from one .NET application to another (either client -> server or server -> client)?

    The answers are invariably n) Absolutely, yes, I am God's gift to rational software development; and m) [whirr-clunk as Microsoft gears engage within brain] Using disconnected System.Data.DataSets since they're already XmlSerializable!

    Always gives me a laugh. Nevermind that employing such an approach basically necessitates the creation of a FOURTH boundary/"layer"/"tier" -- call it Middleware, or specifically in this hideous world, Serialization/Deserialization.

    Anyway, on to my question!

    Due to the headaches raised by the above subject, and the deeper object replication that goes on using .NET Remoting (e.g. regardless of what is actually transmitted down the wire, you get a complete, functional, fully type-specific object with its public/private members/properties/methods intact, with NO Reference.cs or any other whiz-bang class-redefinition machinery thrown in your face), I come upon a quandary.

    In my mind, at least up til the present moment, .NET Remoting is great for applications over whose general operational control you or your company or your trusted partner will maintain for the lifecycle of said application. With this kind of organizational scenario, routers and firewalls are generally surmountable, or at least negotiable, obstacles, since you know exactly from which machine(s) or subnet(s) certain TCP packets will be sent, and exactly to which machine(s) or subnet(s) those packets will be transmitted, and on what TCP port(s).

    .NET WebServices, on the other hand, are a better choice for software with an eventual goal of wider distribution to CUSTOMERS rather than colleagues or partners -- entities whose firewalls you do not control, and who will regard something as little as a request as to its status wrt your application's performance as reflecting an incredibly unprofessional design. In other words, it's not much of a limit to place on your customers that they can transmit HTTP over port 80, and/or HTTPS over port 443.

    But, as I finish up the previous 4 hours of banging my head into various WebService-related walls attempting to get class instances (or even just their public data -- I know how WebServices work and I understand it's for good reason) to replicate, I have to wonder -- what kinds of problems might there be lurking in, say, a widespread commercial application, some of whose clients employ .NET Remoting to communicate with their remote servers using TCP port 80? I don't see any particular *TECHNICAL* problems that are unsurmountable -- obviously, as usage scales, there will be more of a hassle doing load-balancing types of activities compared to, say, turning on IIS clustering and walking away. But that's a problem that is entirely out-of-scope for me -- if I get there with the subject of this question, and it's my biggest problem, I will be very happy.

    Anyone consider or try this in a relatively large/Enterprise-level "ASP" (in its original disambiguation, that is, an Application Service Provider hosting the requests of potentially hundreds or thousands or more clients) environment? I pulled the better part of a decade as a systems/network admin and general TCP/IP geek (UNIX/Linux), so I know that, at least as of ~2003, you couldn't tell your router (unless it had more processors than most mainstream servers in 2007) to ONLY allow traffic fitting the profile of HTTP requests out on port 80. So I don't really see any technical problems.

    However, any feedback is welcome. Thanks for reading this -- my fingers tend to run away from me. :)
